WWII Online vs Planetside

Hi I would like to know what the big differences are with these two games (besides the setting)

Like what are advantages and disadvantages of both games? thanks

    erm sorry to burst your bubble but there isn't a single thread like this that is on the 4 most recent pages. so there hasn't been a thread since at least september. so I don't know what to search for. Any one want to give it a shot and answer the damn question?

    Maybe even link me to the other thread?

    PS is pretty much a regular shoebox shooter but on a bigger scale. WWIIOL is "realistic" and is more of a military simulation than a shooter.

    He's right.. I could not find the last thread on this topic, maybe its just that we have had too many of such threads in the past that we feel a bit jaded.

    Anyway, just to help answer the question, i think it can be summed up best as 2 very different play styles.

    Planetside is action oriented, very much in the style of run and shoot FPS where as wwiiol is about immersion and experience, much more visceral.. you have to watch every step and keep your eyes and ears open, it just takes 1 bullet to kill you. 90% waiting and anticipation, 10% gut wrenching action (I've used that description before, but its quite accurate)

    thanks guys :) I decided to go with WWII Online because planetside will be having a 12 month trial thing so I should wait for that. WWII online sounded much cooler because the community seems very into the whole immersion thing. I am into that too :) thanks everyone

    Planetside = Arcade Space Shooter

    WW2OL = World War II MMO Simulation / Shooter

  • decadredecadre Member Posts: 88

    WW2OL isn't that far all that really from being a World War 2 Arcade Shooter.

    IMHO, WW2OL is a lot like most other shooters out there, except for the simple fact that shooting someone once will kill them all the time. No emptying a clip into a bunny-hopping foe only to see him have enough HPs left to head shot you. Although that does happen from time to time in WW2OL.

    Of course, WW2OL does have that whole RDP thing and one map thing.

    But, my first statement is basically the only difference players will see who don't become involved in the HCs will see from WW2OL and other shooters like Planetside and such.

    wwiioline is not a rush forward to confront the enemy for an instatnt kill nor die situtation.  wwiioline is a rather slow process takes planning with your squad mates.  the goal is to win the map (some my disagree). You can be a great fighter but killing enemy doesnt win you the war in some cases. i remember escort missions to  bombing raids to britain from dusseldorf, takes about 2 hours real time and most of the time you are not confronted by a single enemy aircraft. (well flaks fire upon you, you feel the shake on your aircraft)

    or anouther example,  capturing radio towers (cp) in a city to cause distruption in the enemy.  some times not to mark my spot i didnt shot a single bulet.

    example:  covering back of your squad mates in a set parameter, if you dont put someone to cover your back, parameter can fall to enemy (a single person cant defend 360).  i remember this kind of missions i did, standed in my position waited for hours withouth firing a single shot. but when i spoted an enemy fist i radioed then i tried to spot them/him/it b4 it reached my squad mates from their back. if they dont bother to move in the direction of our postion i didnt bother them so they wouldnt know the postion we were at..

    this feels more real that slash em all, kill em all type of wargames.  wwiioline requires team work (some may disagree).  planning, sometimes even self sacrifice,

    excuse my english....

    Shooting someone once will not kill them all the time.

    Yesterday I got shot twice and hit by grenades 3 times before getting shot a third time killed me.

    In arcade shooters you don't need cover.
    In arcade shooters you don't need to adjust for bullet drop.
    In arcade shooters you don't have to worry about armour penetration.
    etc

    WWII Online vs Planetside

    Isn't that like saying Chess vs Checkers?

  • RubycatRubycat Member Posts: 223

    more like Chess vs Go-fish

    WW2Online is a mass of strategy and gameplay mechanics (complete with flight dynamics)
    Planetside has strategy but everything is a one hitbox game. there is no certain shot to kill (like with tanks) and its air game is beyond awful
    --i mean flying a mosq or reaver is fun, but you cant do a loop and it eventually turns into a game of who can spin the mouse/trackball faster.--

    the air game of ww2online is al about energy More energy = youll win.. [energy = speed] speed with either net you a kill (along with your good aiming and preciss fire of the trigger). or will net you a RTB when your shot up

    the ground games consist of
    WW2online: Tanks with real working penatration. armor is armor and thick armor protects areas much better than thin armor plates like around the fuel tanks and ammo depos inside them.. you can de track tanks and blow the tires off of trucks.. its incredible (even shoot the turret of tanks making them useless coffins)
    -downsides is you cant exit a vehicle in ww2online as well the multicrew isnt fully doing its thing. requires to much communication to multicrew outside using teamspeak and or with a squad.

    the infantry game slighty lacks. planetsides infantry game is a bit more fast paced, but ww2online shoots for simulation like realism (not with grenades though,, they used to be really good, but got toned down due to either complaints or the devs felt they were too strong in thier own way)
    -smoke grens play a vital role
    -from rifles to submachines to lmgs and now snipers (lets not forget the pistols ^_^ lol) its more a who shoots first game.

    ww2onlines capture system is a bit scewed as well. capping tables and or waiting on the ab cap and camping thier depo wasting ammo shooting them as they spawn and run out for cover
    -my displease with ww2online is its capture system-

    Travel times in ww2online have been made slighty better with the add of those msps, but on foot its a LONG run from most areas just to the point where you take a rifle round to your temple and have no idea what and where you got hit from.
    =========================

    Planetside:

    like said before its air game is pretty shoddy. in terms of controls and lack of real dynamces (like looping).. but air is a vital part of the game as well from lib bombing to reaver whoring (yes reaver whoring as much as we hated it)

    the ground game, there are many vehicles to choose from if you have the certs.. as well getting into unlocked vehicles for either transport or gunning mbts. as a hacker when there are no people inside said vehicles it can be hacked [with adv hack cert] and turned to your factions vehicle (though most of time you dont have the cert to get in.. though if its a tank or guned vehicle you can get in the turret and do some dmg before your blown up..
    -from atvs to buggies to transports with guns and mbts [medium battle tanks] and the dreaded yet now nefred ^_^ BFRS. [battle frame robotics]

    the infantry game works very well though, its fast paced but against vehicles your mostly just a speed bump. from pistols to rifles and useless rifles [sorry punisher but i hate you] to empire specific rifles and heavy assualt weapons, rocket and grenade launchers and anti vehicle weapons -and the decimator [anti max/veh/bfr] and of course the good ol sniper and we cant forget the knife [i miss my glowie stick]
    -----
    each of the empire specific items do different things, have different dmg capabilties and shot types
    VS is about high teck laser fire ish (two modes of either standard or armor dmging fire modes)
    TR is about faster weaponry like its reapeter pistol and mini chain gun
    NC is about power with thier jackhammer and the scatter pistol (like a mini pistol shotgun)
    -- their antivehicle
    NC Pheonix
    TR Striker
    VS Lancer
    -- thier medium assualt rifle
    NC Guass
    TR Cycler
    VS Pulsar
    -- heavy assualt
    NC Jackhammer [NOOBHAMMER TRIPLE SHOT]
    TR MCG [BULLET ALL OVER THE PLACE!!!]
    VS Lasher (lagger as it was once called) [beware laggy balls of doom in long cramped hallways]
    ===
    vehicles
    NC thunderer/enforcer/vangaurd (vanguard is like a modern day tank 2 people one driving one gunning)
    TR raider/maruader/prowler (prowler is a 3man tank i driver and 2 gunners (1in turret other in chain gun)
    VS aurorra/thresher/magrider (the magrider is based on anti grav tech -it floats! above water it has 2 positions. the driver who uses a mouse and keyboard -it drives like a pain. strafes and all.. more like a helo i guess) and the gunner of the rail gun -which does not arc and has a little splash dmg).. the driver also has control of a gun himself mounted in the front for those pesky infantry cause you cant mow them down anymore in a mag)
    ===
    capture system is alright, though sometimes kinda flakey. you basically would get into the base and hack the terminal to take control. then a counter goes off and counts down till its yours -during that time the enemy would try to stop you and rehack making you either give up or try all over from the beginning. hack time starts over
    -you can hack with adv hacking. equip terminals/vehicle terminals and med terms (as well the CC control terminal too). terminals beside the cc can also be blown up with enough force -FIRE FIRE FIRE BOOM-
    ===
    blah blah blah theres battle islands (yawn!!! and a boring set of caverns too with alien Tech weaponry and vehicles and mods.. and a bunny..====

    ========

    Really in the end its all about preference, as you can tell Ive played both games at one point, graphically Planetside wins --sheer graphics!!!!..--
    but ww2online stomps planteside into the mud with its gameplay and mechanics (there is just so much coded in its incredible)

    SONY isnt doing to well with planetside in terms of advertising (idiots wont) and its patches are slim for the most part. they do more balancing on content weve had for several years than adding anything new ==lotsa nerfing==
    and the pop of planetside is pretty low due to people either feeling the fun is gone, or they found a better game..

    Either choice is worth the 12-15 a month, just depends on if you want flashy [beep beep MOW! ooohhhh pretty lasers and tracers all over, but darn if i dont hate this cont we are fighting on for the last month or so stupid poplocks] or content loaded [holy crap bullets wising past my head even though its kinda ugly and here comes a tank to blow me up as i red screen]

    forgot to mention the sounds in ww2online are awesome. im thinking i might play again some day -or wait to see what planetside does about thier "want to add in future" basket

    ==hope you enjoyed this==

    nice post Rubycat and /agree :)

  • DantesDantes Member Posts: 163

    Yep gonna have to agree with Rubycat. I've played both pretty extensively and with that being said I'm gonna have to say that I personnally like PS more. I hated the graphics in WW2O and the hours of time it took to do anything of worth. I subscribed to WW2O because I wanted the immersion and the teamwork but what I found is that the immersion was simply FAR too time consuming and the teamwork was severly lacking (I'm sure I just needed a good clan to get into). I would still be playing PS if it weren't for the horrible lag I endured way back when. I think if they do a long freebie on PS I will definately reinstall and play it.

    Like a previous poster said, PS = Fun (for me at least)

    Beta tester supreme

    I agree with robotix, that's really well laid out rubycat, you nail both games totally in that one post.
