Good to see LOTRO still going strong after seven years. Take it for what its worth but according to this site LOTRO is doing OK. http://www.superdataresearch.com/blog/us-digital-games-market/

If you mention rose tinted glasses, you better be referring to Mitch Hedberg.
One only needs to be in game and look around to realize that there are people there enjoying themselves.
Quite frankly, I'm more intrigued that Tera is doing so well. I absolutely love the combat (it's my favorite of any mmo I've played) and I hope that means their expansions well be decent.

I agree, TERA doing well is a good thing, so far have they have done the best with action combat in my opinion as well. Interested to see what they bring out later than may suck me back in the game

I was wondering the same thing, I think it's in LotRO but I can't confirm as it's been over a year since I logged into the game.

I think it has nothing to do with population, more it shows just the like-ability of endgame grind on the given server
Just like the Bounder bounty was, only that wasn't a grind. But if you followed that event, the highest population servers were only somewhere in the middle, and the more coordinated and focused servers finished first, since every player's contribution mattered.
This new grind is not only boring (at least for some), but only the endgamers are interested in it. U14 went live a week ago, a lot of people are still leveling, or haven't even started it yet...
(like me for example, since U14 started at the very same day as the Coursera course, I haven't even logged in with my main this whole week)
Server merges, they've stated a few times already, it's not even in the plans. They're fine with the current 29+1 servers.

For the thread itself: thanks OP, it's a nice find. Especialy the end section is interesting, and I wonder why no-one is mentioned that so far (not only here, a few other forums neither).
It's almost like 2010 again, when I said f2p will be huge, and the reaction was "boo, f2p is crap, I hate f2p, so it never will be anything". Well, I think it was a year ago when I said the first time that mobile/tablet will be taking over soon, with the same responses of "those are crap, nobody will play them".
Khm. Let's see, LotRO is in a great place with ~100mill a year, TOR is at 165mill a year, and then, wait a sec, Crapdashian bombshell: "Provided its success persists, the title is currently on track to generate $200 million this year." In 6 month. A projected 200mill. But you can check some other Glu games as well with similar results...
Don't get me wrong, I don't like mobile games, play only a TCG one on the tablet. But they're easy to develop, easy to target, easy to monetize, and they're generating more and more money as time goes forward. And the industry LOVES money. :I
I'll copy a message I posted on the Official Forums recently regarding this:
" I've been playing for a Month or so now on the Brandywine server. I see many people on the forums and in chat claiming the game is dead or dying, but from my experience that doesn't seem to be the case at all.
Bree always seems busy, I often see other players while questing or exploring and for me the most important of all: I have always been able to form on-level groups for Instances.
It might not have the population of other newer MMOs - but to me it seems just fine. "
That's my opinion on the matter.
