We see mounted combat from the upcoming PvP-MMORPG Darkfall, in production across the pond at Aventurine SA (formerly Razorwax AS). You can view the ten exclusive screenshots by clicking the banner below.
Thank you to RazorWax for sending these over.

I hope you can kill mounts in darkfall like you could in uo otherwise I see mounted combat being a bit of a problem. I mean I'm all for mounts but I want a little variety I don't just want to see all mounted combat. I think if they've thought things through it'll be like it was in uo and thus help keep the economy stable as well as make mounts a little bit of a priviledge. Otherwise I hope they're at least prohibited in places like dungeons to make them more dangerous.
those pictures were photoshop'ed (and therefore shouldnt be called "screenshots")- or this game has a very weird looking game-engine ^^
Will certainly be interesting to see this game in motion - from the so called screenshots I am not very impressed graphics-wise (ground and armor-textures, trees look like those in DAoC 3 years ago and so on)

Good, about damn time we have a good MMOG that doesn't focus on graphics and rather on gameplay. The engine is dated, the game has been in Dev for 5 years, and finally showing progress. I'll take old graphics any day if there is content and depth.

no, they are real, and like the article said its on an average computer. For once a game company shows us how the game will really look on a normal player computer. I would have to say it suits the game and for a PRE BETA it looks very good, can only get better.
The screenshots were real and the only thing photoshop'ed was the darkfall logo which was stated in the interview that went along with it and it was run on a slightly above average computer they mentioned but the game hasn't undergone optimizations yet so you should be able to expect about the same on a average computer once the game is released and probably by open beta. The textures ground wise looks around where daoc was at like 2-4 years ago about. The armor textures I think look good and better than daoc's were or even are now. Not as many polygones it seems but better texture usage and less shadowing and lighting which just slow things down alot and tend to look fake anyways.
With "photoshoped" I was referring to the unnaturally strong contrasts and the artifically looking colors - meaning that the picturs were probably heavily contrast-enhanced and color-balanced.
But that aside - I really dont think that the armor textures are too great. When you look closely you will find that the lightning reflections on the armor dont match the environmental lightning. This could mean that the highlights are infact rather static textures than real reflections, which would suck, imho Especially the heavy plate armor looks completly out of place in these screens. Also, the whole scenery lightning itself looks weird and unnatural - not much, but still slightly "wrong".
I think we can agree tha the engine looks terribly dated. Hopefully the gameplay is really as advanced and dynamic as they say - otherwise I dont see this game going anywhere.

ok man let me put it as simple as i can for you since you have never played a real PVP game apparently, and this is obviously a game for old pvpers
this has FPS aspects to it, a FPS with no instances, with hundreds of players on the screen, need LOW poly count, and lighting effects must be low. I dont know anyone who played a PVP game who had the eye candy on. It simply lags you too much and that is the death of PKing. The game was MADE to look this way, dont you think with artists like Henning Ludvigsen (look up his artwork) in the dev team they couldnt of made much higher quality? No its supposed to look like this for betatest atleast. Like they said it will improve graphics continuously till release (im thinking according to player feedback which is most important).
hope that helped - this is not your regular cookiecutter MMORPG like Vanguard, LOTR or DDO (none of which bring anything new to the table) - this is a real PVP game
"I dont know anyone who played a PVP game who had the eye candy on. It simply lags you too much and that is the death of PKing"
Plenty of people sacrifice performance for eye candy but not recommended really by any hardcore gamers so your point in case is valid just the same.
"with hundreds of players on the screen, need LOW poly count, and lighting effects must be low"
Now that on the other hand is certainly true. The lower the poly count, shading, and lighting effects along with texture quality all tho texture quality not being as big of a impact then the more players the game can fluidily run. Darkfall went with the approach of more players rather than better visuals not to say that the graphics are bad in anyway they just opted for a bigger playerbase instead. What's more impressive 100 people on screen moving around at once with no stuttering and serveral thousand people packed onto the same server or a server of around 2,000-3,000 players that stutters a bit everytime you enter desensly popuplated area. Personally id rather have larger scale fights take place with out having to worry about choppy gameplay. Anyways the screenshots look really good to me despite the fact that they do look dated compared to some newer games around.
