Looking for my first MMORPG

If I may, I'll add Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.

I've been playing MMORPGs since the first Guild Wars first came out, that's 9 years. Not as much as many other users here, but I think it's enough for an opinion. I now enjoy playing MMORPGs more than anything, more because of the social aspect of the genre.

MMORPGs, in general, have one thing in common, quests are given to you as a wall of text. At first you might read it but after a while you'll just keep pressing the continue/accept button and move on without reading a word, because the only information you need to complete the quest will be on the side of the window.

I don't play MMORPGs for the lore, but if I'm playing one for a long time, I end up starting to look up on the internet for some lore. But that doesn't stop me from ignoring text in-game.

Now, FFXIV: ARR is different for me, I've been reading everything, even sidequests. Quests are given to you as dialogues, so it's better to read for me.

FFXIV: ARR is a sub game, first time you sub will cost 20$, the next months will be around 15$.

Why and how did I start playing FFXIV?

After leaving Age of Wulin after almost playing it for a year, I was bored to hell for a month, not sticking with any free to play game I picked up, not even EVE Online got me back after re-subbing for a month.

I read many reviews and saw many youtube videos and streamers about FFXIV, and from that input I wasn't interested in the game (and because it's a sub game), but because I love the final fantasy series (especially, FFIX :P), I took a leap of faith. On the first minutes I was already enjoying the game, mostly because of nostalgia.

FFXIV is MMORPG like any other, but if you enjoyed a final fantasy game, then it's a game to try.

One more aspect, you don't need to do quests that requires you to kill dozens or hundreds. The highest number I was required to kill was 6, normally it's 3 or 4. You level all levels at almost the same speed. You can also have all classes in one character, all craftings in one character too. It's a cross-platform game, meaning PC gamers and Playstation gamers can play together. I think players can do dungeons with players from other servers, which makes queueing for dungeons a lot faster, but I'm not sure about this one (that's what I heard players commenting on streams and youtube videos).

I hope, that whatever game you play, that you enjoy it.

PS: Joining a guild/clan/group will increase the fun factor in any MMORPG. MMORPGs are social games too.

EDIT: Damn I wrote a lot...

Pretty sure all the games mentioned now are available as a direct download from the publishers site.. Cant think of any that have only released with a physical cd/dvd copy for years now.

If you really don't mind the sub try World of Warcraft (never thought I would say this). It has a Starter Edition which is free and you can play to lvl 20 for free. If you see you really dont like it, no harm done to your wallet. Otherwise you can upgrade your account and buy the game(s).

It has been around for many years and has grown quite a bit. It is easy, it is huge, guild communication is a big aspect (voicechat mostly)  and I think it is a good place to start. Even if people, me included, look down on it, the truth is it has many features that are done very well. Besides most games are WoW clones anyway so why not stick with the original?

And if you like one aspect more than the other then you can look for a game which has a bigger focus on that feature.

Only thing that might be a "problem"  could be raids. Back when I played a raid took hours to complete so not sure how this will work with with your available game time. But maybe they changed that, has been quite a while since I played.

Stay away from old MMOs in my opinion. You won't have a good time getting into something years old.

    - Wildstar

    - ESO

    - Guild Wars 2

    - Star Wars MMO (SWTOR)

"Wildstar is a good start :) Recommend to play this because of the good graphics, very light and cartoony and not trying to be like expensive repetitive trash wrapped with the latest graphic engines. Its refreshing really to see an MMO not be like the usual hit things till they die clone. Balance between gamplaey and visuals is nice and fitting. Even the races and character roles feel like they're natural for each other. It just feels right with this game."

I'll second that list. Well, I never tried Wildstar, so I can't support that one much beyond saying it looks like it has some solid features going for it, but I love the other three.

ESO, SWTOR and GW2 are also very easy for someone who's new to MMO's, while Wildstar seems to cater more to experienced hardcore players from everything I've heard about it.

I'll also add The Secret World to the list. Although it also may not be the best game for a first timer, as it has a rather steep learning curve (but more than worth it for the stories if you don't mind that extra challenge).

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

I would recommend SWTOR for beginners. Easy for first time players and very enjoyable experience. You can play it for free, though I would recommend to pay a sub for more enjoyable experience. But you can definitely try if for free and see if you like it. You can try WoW for free (first 20 levels I believe), but it's graphics is way too outdated for my taste. I actually tried it few weeks ago, just to see if I would enjoy it and gave up after 30 minutes. Meh....

TSW is also a good choice, though it's more difficult to master than both other mentioned games. Rift  and LOTROare other choices,  and you can check them for free as well.

Personally after playing SWTOR the only game that I could play is TSW... voice over can really spoil you.

totally left GW2 after massive blowout by the game, a lot of items got inflated prices due to rumored dupe in currency, it became too much for everything to farm.
  • FingzFingz Member UncommonPosts: 139
I would go free to play.  The two free triple A titles that come to mind are Rift and Star Wars the Old Republic.

GW2 is prob the best for an RPG player either that or SWTOR.

Stay away from WoW, the players will chew you up and spit you out. That player base hate newcomers..

You could get it a lot cheaper if you look around but the 15 bucks a month is something you have to consider. If it is worth that for 45 hours a month is really up to you, but there is a free trial to level 20 if you want to try.

However I would recommend 2 other games instead: GW2 and Wildstar.

GW2 is B2P so you only need to cough up the boxprice (you can get some stuff in the itemshop, the useful stuff is more bank and character slots but you can also buy them for ingame cash if 5 characters ain't enough for you or if you like collect old junk). Nice graphics and I have quite a few players new to MMOs in my guild, in fact many of them dealt better with the combat than many MMO vets in the beginning. Play it myself and had since launch.

Wildstar do have monthly fees just like Wow and is the latest good released MMOs. It have a bit more questgrind than GW2 but is a very good game. It also have a combat system that might turn off some oldtime MMOers but you are starting on a blank sheet here.

The secret world might also be worth a look if you want horror instead of fantasy or sci-fi. Well made game with no levels and B2P so no monthly fees.

Try youtubing some vids of the games and see if any of them catch your fancy. As for actual roleplaying with other player I recommend you to join a nice RP guild they are not that hard to find in any game and a big difference between MMOs and singleplayer game is that a MMO is not more fun than the people you play with, a good guild can make a mediocre game fun and a good game awesome while a bad guild can make any game suck.

Whatever you pick, welcome to the genre. :)

That really depends on the guild OP join, PUGing might not be a great experience though (pick up groups where you join some random people you don't know). Many Wow guilds don't mind noobs at all.

Personally I do like new players whatever game I play, that means we can teach them the ropes and get them to play the way we need, old MMOers are often stuck playing in a certain way (which might work very badly in some games) and that is far from always a good thing. Training up a new player is usually faster since they don't think they already master the game in all ways possible and gets upset when someone try to get them play in another way.

There are ways to perform best in MMOs for a single player but they also needs to perform good with the others in the guild and we have our ways (that might not always be optimal but is fun and gets the job done).

I still think GW2 would be a better choice than Wow though but Wow is a good game and if OP likes it's style and world then just go for it.

You don't have to start off buying the expansions.

Also, I "think" WoW has some sort of "try it for x amount of levels free" system.someone will have to fill in the blanks on that.

Again, I offer Star Wars the Old Republic because it is a free to play game (with a subscription option) and might ease you into the idea of an mmorpg.

Playing a "typical" mmo such as WoW is really a different experience. Quite frankly, had I gone from the two role playing games that led me to mmo's (morrowind and Neverwinter Nights) and then played WoW I might not have stayed.

It really depends on your expectations.

WoW probably has the most to do since it is a huge game that has been around a long time but you might not like how the quests are done when compared to Star Wars the old Republic that presents quests in a similar fashion to Mass Effect.

And again, it's free to try so you are out no money.

If you would prefer free to play than I would suggest Rift or Lotro. Swtor is not really free to play it has a lot of restrictions.

If you dont mind spending some money than I would suggest Guild wars 2 or Final fantasy 14. These are both great games if you like rpgs and final fantasy is still quite new.

Only get Wow if your computer cant run anything better. Its an old game now and not a good rpg experience.
