Modern games largely fall prey to the "Combat or logoff" syndrome. Provide more avenues of progression or more things to do in downtime from combat, and you provide more opportunities for socialization which strengthens the community. Let factions communicate instead of segregating them off from each other. Allow faction switching. Basically, stop funneling people into narrowly pre-defined experiences.

Ya, SWG was awesome. Sony sucks at life. There will never be another game like it. Sony still sucks at life. Smedley should be kicked in the nuts, etc.
I never got to play but didn't any of the players warn the devs what they were about to do was going to be a disaster? Makes you think maybe dev board meetings could use about 25 actual high standing community players to represent the voice of the customer. How many mmo's have been destroyed with a well meant expansion / update?
That was part of the problem. Players were upset because nobody knew how to become a Jedi. So the dev gave them hints. Then players were upset because Jedi never left their houses. So the Devs created forced pvp for Jedi that pushed them out of their houses if they activated a Jedi skill. Then players were upset cause Jedi was hiding. So the Devs fixed the tracking system. Then players were upset because it was too difficult to become a Jedi. So the Devs made Jedi a regular profession. Not to mention the usual cry about op skills and constant nerfs. And that was just about Jedi, imagine constant demands being made by just about all the classes and professions.
Some of the players. All the whiny cry baby Jedi wanna-bes who wanted instant gratification and didn't want to do anything or work on anything.
The intelligent player base, did in fact warn the Devs, every...EVERY step of the way, but Sony doesn't care or listen to people.
Interactions went something like this at the high points of the games demise:
Sony: Derp derp Jedi village.
Players: This is dumb.
Sony: Nope, you love it.
Players: ...*thats silence because many leave.
Sony: Pshhh...whatever...they love it. Btw, heres this Combat upgrade.
Players left: WTF....this is garbage. and stupid.
Sony: You love it.
Players: .... *because nearly all gone*
Sony: Meh...they love it....btw...since there isn't anyone playing this game now, heres a whole new revamp, so different it had to be re-released in new boxes.
Players: .... *mostly because most were gone, the rest because the rest game up finally with the NGE junk*
Sony: They love it. We'll just sit here and collect some money from the 10 Starwars fanboys left in the game for a few years before dumping this server into the river out back.
As usual, the point flies right over the heads of 90% of the commenters.
SWG was a buggy mess. It was never a good game in of itself. It had a community that was excited to be part of its IP. That's pretty much the point. People were still interested in the RP of MMORPG. We haven't gotten a game actually interested in that in years...maybe decades. Secret World and City of X, I'll concede, but we see where those two are languishing.
These days "RP server" just translates to "the one where people ERP." It's sad that no publisher wants to support RP anymore. I actually had hope for World of Darkness and that's history now. The early games had creators who'd grown up playing D&D and other forms of tabletop, and those MMOs were a love letter to that. That's one of the missing pieces most of the commenters here don't seem to get. MIsts of Pandaria, ESO, SWTOR, Wildstar, GW2---these games don't even bear a passing resemblance to actual gaming and have pretty much zero support for roleplaying. We don't get RPGs anymore. We get glorified multiplayer lobbies with persistent worlds. The name of this site really needs to be changed to MMOG and drop the RP altogether.

Exactly. Some people here need to stop pretending that they would be these Zen-like social gurus if it wasn't for wow clones. Such nonsense. Like I said earlier, its not the games that they miss, its how they themselves once were.

maybe in a jokey fashion, but really, that pretty much nailed it. SOE didn't listen to the players at all, not once, why they ever bothered putting it on the test server if they were going to totally ignore the feedback, we'll probably never know, but they did, and the game died, it could have been a learning experience, but i don't think SOE ever did, as the saying goes, 'a leopard never changes his shorts'

The Jedi hologrind was another massive fail on SOE's part. They reduced the most iconic part of the IP into a mindless grind. I found it highly insulting to me as a fan and a player. It was just another example of the grind-focused lowest common denominator thinking that wrecked that game.
The game was designed with very ambitious high concept systems but once it was released, the devs tried to solve the game's issues by hiding everything behind grinds rather than actually try and evolve those systems

I was satisfied with the CU. It was a good thing in my opinion. At least i had some serious fun, after it was released. The very first time my Smuggler could do some funstuff in combat, beside spamming 1 single abillity, as it was before the CU.
Well i was intruiged how fast i could get my feet back in. And how fast i found a crowed of ppl that where fun and good chummy. I totally loved to stuff my house with various rares. Also i definately liked Hunting on various planets. The vastness was great. The very thight spawns where sometimes annoying. I loved the RP citys that where founded. Lots of ongoing stuff.
This post was about how OP experienced the immersive world of SWG, but as usual it urns into a discussion for or against NGE.
Back on track....Yes, it was wonderful see all the interaction of roleplayers that would take part in front of you, all the commerse, the gossip, to roam around in the wild to suddenly meet someone whou you would be friends with, visiting other players houses and their parties, get inspiration and decorate your own......
I think it will take a long time before we see a game with all this spontaneously happening again.
Old nostalgic eyes? Naw, not really....i get the same feeling just by logging into a SWG client today.

WoW, being an okay game mind you, completely destroyed the genre for nearly a decade.
Now we are seeing the move away from it, but most devs still completely mess it up. They just don't get it, and for the life of me I have no idea why.

All around i totally loved the CU i can say.
