Crafting-Based Game?

bcodaybcoday Member UncommonPosts: 7
Well, I'm looking for a game that has solid combat and crafting, but in which I can choose to just craft and not have to worry about having to fight and fight and fight just to get supplies for my crafting. An example of what I'm NOT looking for is RO2, where you have to be strong enough to kill the enemies to get supplies. Anyone have suggestions?

UO is the only one that comes to mind.

Eve or uncharted waters, maybe ryzom.

I tried EVE once upon a time, but the learning curve is just too high unless you have someone teaching you the game mechanics. Haven't had a chance to play UO. Is it solid?

Wurm Online is the king of crafting games in my view.

    Eve is second.

    Yeah...this.

I came back to edit my post and add Xsyon and remove Eve. On the surface Eve looks like a great crafting game but its really not.  I call it the great game engine that you cant actually play. The game is learning how, then doing it is another story completely.

Archeage has a solid crafting system in which you can level from crafting (i think I got about 30 of my 50 levels from farming and crafting alone and I'm not big into crafting).
A lot of your materials can either be acquired by either farming, open world gathering, or killing monsters and almost everything you need can be acquired off of the auction house. Also I believe a large majority of items that are obtained off of monsters can also be acquired through farming (leather, archeum, ect.) but just takes a bit longer.

A few problems you may not like:

    • This is a PvP centered game without question
    • I have not heard anything about them adding PvE only servers and as a crafter I assume that is what you are looking for
    • PvP is partially forced on crafters as they have to do cross continent (to the enemy factions homeland) trade runs to obtain gilda stars which are now (with patch 1.2 in place) required for almost all end game crafting
    • A subscription to the game upon release will be mandatory as you cannot own land (farm/house) without it.
    • You can and will become labor starved (labor explained further down) which will limit how much crafting/gathering you can do in a single day.

Along with 1.2 patch they have increased labor costs of everything you do in game. Labor is a type of currency you use for common crafting actions as well as other day to day things that replenishes throughout the day at a rate of 10 labor for 5 minutes and caps out at 5,000 labor points. This was in my opinion a push to drive cash shop sells of labor potions.

Anyway, I do find the crafting and gathering aspects of this game very enjoyable but do beware the issues that I have stated and if you are interested I would wait for the release or at least pay bare minimum for the beta.

Everquest 2 is the only game I ever played where leveling your crafter is a separate but equal way of progressing a hero. You can even ride mounts at the appropriate crafting level equal to player level (such as 20, 40, 60 for upgrading speeds.)

And it's also possible to gather the mats no matter what level you are as the resources are often where there's less aggro. Of course, going this route is harder than simultaneously leveling via combat and you have to expect getting one-shot now and then in higher zones, but the cool thing is, there's no limitations on where you go. It's just at your own risk. Pretty awesome system, really...

Now I'm missing the adventures I had in my time in EQ2. ^.^

oh if you like crafting there is a huge world out there. I used to play EQ2 and when it comes to crafting

Darkfall, Wurm Online, Xyson are light years ahead. Actually Darkfall crafting is a bit sparse compared to the other two and yet light years ahead of EQ2.

example:...ever wanted to craft a ship?

Also, another game I would look into is FFXIV. Similar to what rainmourn said about EQ2, this games crafts are separate classes with craft related tools and armor. While I do believe there is a grind to be able to acquire materials for high end crafting, there is an auction house as well.
This game I am less familiar in crafting than others since I only hit like level 25 leatherworker and 20 fisherman.

When pvp isn't optional (as in, WoW-style, pve server choice) or located in battlegrounds you sign on for, then I avoid the game...so there's probably excellent crafting games I've not tried. When I crave virtual housekeeping, I'm not keen on 12 year old marauders. =)

Ryzom. It also has the added feature of one of the best harvesting/gathering systems I've ever seen.

I heard so many good things about UWO, but that tutorial is incredibly boring......I just never could get any momentum going in that game.....Wurm was OK but didnt seem to free player friendly. at least when I tried it a couple of years ago...Has that changed with the PVE server?...There also wasnt any land t obuild on when I tried it.

I dont think you are going to find any game that is 'free friendly'

that said, the skill cap for free players is 20 which is actually really high but you also cant have a deed.

I have been playing Final Fantasy 14 for a week now and have yet to do any combat. I have been doing nothing but gathering and crafting the whole time. They have a pretty good crafting system though I have not reached end game and have no information on it.

I already had on Leviaithon a 23 conjurer / 15 arcanist and didn't want to start over. I have found a good FC that is very active and helpful to bad they don't have a guild house yet.
