[Column] General: Summer Snapshots

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Let's try playing a little game. I'll pose a bunch of topics and provide my thoughts on each. You're invited to do the same. The only stipulation is that the word snapshot in the sub-head means there's a limit of 100 words per subject. Are you up for it? I guess we'll see soon enough. Here's your chance to join me in offering quick takes on Firefall, Destiny, WoW: Warlords of Draenor, WildStar, ArcheAge and which MMOGs may be approaching their sunsets.

Firefall's chances of success  = true!

    Destiny's destiny=  blackhole pc oblivion

Warlords of Draenor's ability to reinvigorate WoW = ima skeptic

WildStar's long-term prognosis= oh boy... think they didnt know how big their pvp & casual  playerbase was and fell short of delivering a proper system.    :- /

    miss:  warhammer online!

Wildstar: 2 50's, lots of PVE and PVP later I ran out of content within a month. Daily quests do not extra content make. It has a very strong set of tools to work with if they can master class balance and keep adding content on a GW2-esque pace. I see F2P in 18-24 months.

Firefall: While I can't tell exactly what's changed since I played it a year ago, it looks good in its current state.

we'll see WoW got B2P before wildstar, if that! WS has a very good business model atm.

    Fireflop <--- lol

Destiny: Will do ok, but have problems with player retention

WoD/WoW: Will never see 12 million subs again, no matter how good WoD is. May hit 10m again.

WildStar: F2P within 6 months to 1 year. 12months-24 months if they manage to add casual content, fix bugs/combat, and fix all the FPS issues.

    ArcheAge: Flops in the west

Surprise prediction: DAoC will go F2P before next summer, causing players to come back and RvR again for a few months at least.

    Currently Playing: ESO and FFXIV
    Have played: You name it
If you mention rose tinted glasses, you better be referring to Mitch Hedberg.

$60 + Monthly + CREDD is not a sustainable business model, IMO. The monthly subscription model is a dying one. If they dropped the monthly sub and went with F2P + microtransactions and an optional sub they'd see a healthy influx of players now that they've collected their $60 from us early adopters. It's coming, it's just a matter of when. I'm being conservative by pushing it out 1.5-2 years - I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen sooner.

WoW is too big for me to consider going back.  Even if I started with a Lv90 character, it just feels so large that I'd feel like I was missing something no matter how much time I spent playing.  If Blizzard ever released "Classic WoW" possibly with a few things to make the gameplay smoother (LFG tools, etc) then maybe I'd go back.  But I have no desire to dive into WoW the way it is today.

I am curious about ArcheAge, but I haven not been fortunate enough to get into a beta yet.

Which defunct MMOGs do you miss the most?

    SWG! Hands down.

i'm with OrbitXO on the Warhammer Online. The PvP matches had such great feeling to them, and teaming up with a few friends and doing witchblade killgroups was a lot of fun!

Firefall: I could easily see this failing. The launch of Destiny won't help either.

Destiny: is interesting, imo, because it extends the scope of B2P + DLC games beyond the likes of Battlefield.

    • Follow on DLC purchases = higher online profit margins.
    • No sub so no rush to max level in 30 days.
    • No cash shop so no nickel and dime - dollared maybe but content costs money. And if the content is poor people won't buy it.
Will Dragon Age adopt the same approach?

Warlords: sub below 6M by the end of Q3 must be a possibility. A good number will return obviously but I think Activision are expecting those who do to leave by 2015 Q1.

Wildstar: I suspect NCSoft are planning an eastern f2p with cash shop launch. In western markets I see it struggling although it will probably manage a (small) niche.

Archegage: a niche .... if it is lucky.

Nearing their end: Asheron's Call we know about; ditto Ultima mobile ditto. Publishers may well have other motives for keeping underperforming games going. For example SoE will continue with EQ1 until Landmark/Next are launched. EA will keep SWTOR in maintenance mode. Funcom will keep AoC going until the IP has to be renewed. DAoC - in name at least although it could become a totally different game.

Which defunct mmo do I miss the most: CoH.

Delayed mmo: ordinarily WoD. But Activision have clearly set an end of year deadline. Sub 5M subs by the end of the year would look bleak indeed.

Next WoW xpac: needs to be sooner. Put a bigger team on it.

And it doesn't look good for FF:XIV imo.
