What if ?

And this is a big what if. What do you think would happen if Blizzard along with wod came out and said the base game will be free to play to level 60 ? I think a ton of people would jump all over something like that. But if they did what do you think would happen to other mmo communities ? Would playerbases drop off. Was talking about this last night with some mmo friends and they all think it would be a killing for blizzard down the road. It would be like having a second community in the game. Cash shop sales would probably go through the roof. Is it even possible for them to do vanilla wow f2p with all the changes done to the game ?

Just check forum post before and after WoD beta keys giveaways. Ofcourse they will jump. It wouldn't make it killer for them, but sure will bring them more money.

It would bring an absolute shit load of kids into the game. Wouldn't surprise me if the population quadripled. Question is... would it be a good thing?

Level 20 free to play is not having an effect like that what makes you think level 60 free to  play would? the game will be what level 100 with WoD?

WoW is old and actually its a pokemon game atm pet vs pet lmao they should add WoW to the facebook games...

I don't think it would do anything for blizzard at all.  For starters it takes like 24 hours to get to level 60 via quests which means people would all hit max level in a few days then there would be nothing to really do.  WoW is an endgame focused game and it always has been, that's what they do well.  WoW is a 10 year old game still holding 7.5 million subs, that is impressive in of itself but no one plays WoW anymore for the graphics, questing, or leveling experience...  People that play the game play for the endgame.

I played WoW for 8 years and I wouldn't go back for F2P, I have been there and done that a bunch of times.  I would imagine a lot of old WoW players would feel the same way.

One thing that I could possibly see working is if Blizzard re-released Vanilla WoW as it was right before TBC released in a F2P model with a cash shop.  I honestly wonder how many current and old time WoW players would return for that, I know I would check that out.

P.S. - Blizzard already has a cash shop, you can buy mounts, xmogs, etc there.

WoW is too popular for them to do that without limiting the 1-60 with the same limitations that the current 1-20 F2P accounts have, would would kind of negate 1-60 F2P.

Thats just rose colored glasses speak, almost on the same level as calling SWG "one of the greatset MMO achievements in history".

If Blizz did that, people would try it out, then quickly realise why the vast majority of WoW players (both hardcore and casual) considered BC/WotLK as its golden era.

The moment the players realised things suchs as warriors being the only class capable of tanking peroperly, paladins needing to reapply their seals after every judgement, shaman totems only being effective at small ranges, the raid encounters being less complicated than today's random normal dungones and LFR (the list goes on and on and on), they would drop it faster than the french dropped their rifles in WW2 :/ The MMO hipster mentality seems to forget all the quality of life and balance changes Blizz implemented since vanilla.

Honestly, those are the things I miss most in the game.

You're right the encounters weren't overly complicated but their implementation was spot on.  I agree that TBC was the pinnacle of the game but classic had some of the most epic content ever released in an MMO.  Raid dungeons that you could actually get lost in, world bosses that required multiple full raids to kill, class specialization, etc.  We rarely get to step into a dungeon or raid that allows us to be fully immersed like BRD or AQ 40 now a days.

I get your point about being able to get lost in the dungeons and instances and I do appriciate that from vanilla, but while you may like the fact that vanilla wow was a completely unbalanced almalgamation of a limited few viable classes, and a large amount of classes that would never get invited into the raids and dungones, the vast majority of players wouldn't.

Maybe I am being an ass (which is quite possible), but when you say that totally unbalaced classes and simple raid encounters are the "things you miss the most", when in any other game those things would be held against it (and rightfully so), I feel that you are  just trying to go with a "go against the grain, oldschool wow was better" hipster mentality, rather than being truly genuine.
