Do you watch more Youtube than TV/Netflix etc.?

andre369andre369 Member UncommonPosts: 970

I probably do not, but I for sure watch more on Netflix and about the same amount of Youtube and TV over a week.

My reason for making this topic is not to find out whether or not you watch what. But I am more curious how you find new stuff to watch at Youtube, gaming related. I have a handful of favorite channels I got on my sub list, and I never really go beyond any of them. I watch the videos that seem interesting in my sub list and that is pretty much it.

Whenever a suggestion for me pops up I instantly say to myself, no thank you.

So I am interested in how you find new channels to follow or do you at all?

Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

Yeah, Youtube is a gold mine if you know how to find things there. And I've now cut the cable/satellite TV cord completely (although I do still pay for Netflix streaming). But I'm not sure how much longer this party is going to last?

    Here's two starter tips:

    http://www.reddit.com/r/fullmoviesonyoutube/
    http://www.reddit.com/r/Documentaries

(Copy and paste if these links won't work - sometimes they don't here anymore.)

And here's a few keywords - Youtube playlist (I'd suggest a private one), wireless router and set top box - or maybe Playstation or internet capable TV, Proxfree and Hola, Youtube downloader (I like aTube Catcher), and PBS streaming video to round things out.

One note. I'm not a sports guy, I like good old movies better than crappy new ones, and I could care less about seeing the latest episode of Lizard Lick Towing, etc.. So if you can't live without this kind of stuff...

I only use Youtube to watch music videos, and I never watch videos about gaming, or people playing games.

TV I leave running in the background to distract my wife so I can game in peace.

I'd rather read about something (hence why I still get the newspaper delivered to my door) than watch it on a video screen.

I watch TV maybe one or two hours a week if there is some really good documentary on the information channel.

I don't know what Netflix is, we do not have it here in sweden.

I watch loads of youtube, movies, documentaries, music videos, gameplay shows, and such.

    Yes you do: www.netflix.com/?locale=sv-SE

And also you have the pirate version https://sweflix.com/

It's ok to not know about it, but saying it's not available is a lie :]

IN the UK we are required to pay a license to the BBC if we buy any electronic equipment capable of playing terrestrial television.

For years I hated this, I though it was the most absurd, unsustainable and heavy-handed way of earning revenue.  Then I went travelling for a year and saw the television other people have to watch.  I have now modified my will to leave my house to the BBC.

TV is pretty much a non existent medium to me, i get all my content through Youtube, Reddit or services like netflix.

And If It's not available on any of those, well, I'll sail the high seas.

Sure as hell not waiting until It's 8 PM to see a randomly selected episode.

Yes, one positive from the internet, people can no longer tell you how to spend your time, you can now choose how to spend it.

Pioneer, I love the BBC. Especially the documentaries. We don't usually get BBC programming in the U.S. (except for a little on Public Broadcasting), and so I've recently almost been turning into a complete anglophile discovering decades of this material - now online on Youtube. Thank You Brits!

A typical BBC documentary compared to an American documentary from someplace like The Discovery Channel? Pfftt. And things are just getting worse and worse here in the states.

About TV, TIVO is great for recording stuff and letting you watch it when you want to.  I use Netflix and Youtube about the same.  For gaming I google my interests on youtube.  Character builds, play throughs, reviews, sometimes quest information.

I bought Sky with the documentary package for a month.  Every couple of hours there would be a documentary entitled; True Ghost Stories, or Proof that Aliens have Landed!

I know they are after viewers but selling lies and make belief as fact just annoyed the hell out of me.  I cannot even begin to describe how much it pisses me off that in the US pseudo science is sold as fact in the search for ratings.  it is just moronic.

You may not get the same Netflix that people in the U.S. would. For example I know for a fact that Canadians get a much poorer service/selection from Netflix than those in the states do. My Canadian cousins have bitched about this, and I believe one or two of them ended up using a proxy somehow to get around it.

No, but ask a 10 year old the samething. I bet he will tell you yes.

I quit TV a few years ago.

For a while I thought YouTube would be a good replacement, however the ads have become insane.  I was watching a Nova progrsm on You Tube and  could not believe what was happening.  The program was about an hour long and there were about 10 commercials.  To add insult to injury they were all the same exact commercial.  I realize that they need to generate some money but 10 commercials !

Its sad but on TV that same program has very little advertising.  So much for You Tube.

I don't usually watch specific channels unless its for music, like TairyHesticles when I want some good old school rap. When I look for Youtube stuff thats game-related, I usually just search for keywords related to the specific game I am curious about, then filter by upload time (usually within the last month, to make it a bit more specific& up to date). I have actually also found this a decent method to determine in-game population and popularity as well. (Yeah yeah, don't bite my head off, statisticians. Say what you will, its a better determinant than Xfire.)

So like - if I had a hankering for PVP and wanted to play a sci-fi themed game while doing it, I might search SWTOR PVP, filter within the past month, and see what pops up. The amount of videos that result generally give a good indicator of the popularity of the gameplay type. For instance, in SWTOR, you will undoubtedly find way more PVP videos of end-game players than PVE. This might tell you that the PVP scene is way more popular and fleshed out than the endgame PVE scene in that game. The opposite would be true for FF14.
