    In queue again...so many people..

There's been a lot of people asking for this since they don't want to pay a box price for something that they may not like.

Honestly I don't think reaching level 20 is a good indicator of all this game has to offer, but hopefully it'll give people enough of a taste of what it has to offer.  There are people that will buy some games and only play them for an hour because it's "generic WoW clone tab target combat", so this can help alleviate that some.

This is a good change, it finally gives people a chance to try it out.

    Also note the following:

    [Character Creation Restriction]

    • - Up to eight playable characters, restricted to one playable character per World, can be created with a Free Trial account.
    • - In order to keep playing with the same in-game and character data in the full version, players have ninety (90) days after the Free Trial expires to upgrade to the full retail version of the game.

Is it as forced groupy as FFXI? If so, doesn't all the communication restriction make it really difficult to tryout the game?

the game only forces you to group if you want to progress with the main story quests, aside from that, no. Also, trial members are able to use the duty finder and join free companies and talk freely in them, so it shouldn't be hard to find people if you are able to get a decent free company. Even though there isn't much to do at 20 (imo), it still accomplishes what it sets out to do which is trying out the game. 30 might be a better options to play up to since you can do Wolve's den pvp then or at least lower the level required to do it to 20 or below.

It depends on your computer, if you got a decent gpu, then pc is by far better than ps3. However, my friend tells me that the PS3 controller plays well with the game.  I personally love PC, and it looks a lot better with a good gpu.

Game companies have been doing it all wrong.  Instead of F2P with cash shop, buy and play or buy and subscribe, they just need to made access to the initial game free for the first 15 days, then charge as subscription fee if a player want to continue.

Honestly I am not sure why game companies don't do this.

Charging for a box upfront obviously provides front loaded income but after so many disappointments people are afraid to pay for a game they might not like.  I know I don't have an extra $30-$50 floating around for something I might not even play an entire day of.

Also F2P is a huge failure because even though it is free, most come with huge pay walls in order to actually enjoy playing the game.  I mean how can you judge if the game is good, if you don't have access to full progression and content?

So the simple solution is give the game away for free which will encourage everyone to try it out.  They get full access and progression and all that progress is saved.  All they have to do to continue is sign up for a monthly subscription of $15 a month to continue.

As far a FFXIV.  Honestly I am not interested in a trial with so many restrictions.  No access to Tell?  Seriously?  Hey I am new, I need to be able to TALK and ASK QUESTIONS of my fellow players, not be put on mute because I am not a paying customer.  Seriously, just let me play the game and if I like it, I have no problem forking over cash.

No thanks. If you need a question answered that badly you can post it here, or another forum. Give people free access to in game chat channels and it will become a mess. Not only with gold selling website advertisements but just general tools that have nothing better to do. The way they have it setup is perfect.

In case anyone was wondering, it seems to be a 14 day trial.  Not unlimited.
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.

They  used to. In fact, that used to be pretty much "the standard" approach for pretty much any game (MMO or otherwise) I ever saw.

    What changed?

Well, they found out they could just use a F2P/Cash Shop model, get the same "Play For Free!" advertising out there, and potentially make far more money than just a subscription fee off it...

Even developers whose games aren't truly free to play (as in, you have to buy them to experience the game in full, or at all) are abusing the "Play For Free!" thing, because for some reason, people's brains shut down when they see the word "Free!". Blizzard does it. Guild Wars 2 does it. Other games do it. None of them are actually F2P.

Charging for a box upfront obviously provides front loaded income but after so many disappointments people are afraid to pay for a game they might not like.  I know I don't have an extra $30-$50 floating around for something I might not even play an entire day of.

But isn't that the risk you take with anything? You go to a movie, you can't be guaranteed to like it. You go to a restaurant and order an expensive meal, there's no guarantee you're going to like it. You buy a car and it could end up being laden with problems. ANY investment includes a degree of risk. There's no guarantee you're going to like something once you've paid for it. Games are no different.

There's no "law" that says "customers must always enjoy their purchase and feel it was worth the money". Hence, there's no recourse when you don't. I'm not talking about "false advertising" or "faulty product". I'm talking about "I bought this game because I thought I'd like it, and I don't...".

And really, there's so much information about games out there now - reviews, previews, let's plays, articles, discussion forums, interviews... games are probably one thing you can feel the most secure in making a  purchase of. Be an informed customer.

Free trials are still an awesome way to get that kind of information, but they're not the only way.

If there wasn't a restriction on it for trial accounts, you wouldn't be able to communicate with other players anyway, and neither would anyone else, because your chat window would be full of spam chat from RMT/Gold Sellers.

If your interest is in being able to check a game out before buying it, then you've got it. Not being able to PM someone shouldn't be that big a hindrance.

Great chance for those who want to check this game out.  Take advantage and hopefully some of you find you like this game and play it.
