I've just recently played ED in it's beta form and while it operates fine an all it just doesn't seem to offer the promise of immersion that SC looks like it will bring. I know we're all getting a small snipet of SC in alpha through arena commander but even this small vision seems more in depth than the world I traversed in ED that was a beta. I was hoping that ED would tide me over until SC came out in a year or so but I must say so far I'm more disappointed in their beta than I am with SC in alpha.

I wonder how much of that is anticipation and expectation vs reality?
One of the things I liked about Elite's design process was the DDF (design discussion forums) - eg https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=25164 that laid out gameplay and mechanics in a very clear way which helped to temper the hype.
Star Citizen doesn't have any clarifiers at the moment so it's very easy to get carried away thinking about what might be possible as opposed to what will actually be possible. Time will tell I guess.
Regardless, the best thing out of all of this is having a choice of modern space games.

i backed both, but i just cant seem to get into Elite too much. I think i got spoiled by my constellation that just sits in my hangar. Or maybe its just when i hear everyone talk about all the different sized cheese wedges i get to fly around in Elite.
i got lots of time to get into Elite tho, since Star Citizen is a long ways off
same with Battlestar Online or Vendetta or any other space game whcih did not do the genre justice
only Star Citizen will be the BDSSE so much is clear.
which ships do you own, or just a basic pledge?
Been in Elite beta for a while and feel generally underwhelmed by the whole thing.
As someone who grew up playing pew pew space games (and the original elite!) I always feel like it's just lacking...something. Yet to put my finger on what that something is but hopefully by release it'll feel less...dull.
Right now I've got the constellation pledge ship. I'm sure I'll build the hanger up a bit more before launch as we obviously have some time to wait.
I'm going to keep playing ED through beta and launch to give it a chance to grow on me.
My sentiments as well... oh an sorry about SOE eating your hamster your lucky if it didn't suffer terribly at their hands
If you liked the SC Alpha, then honestly all i can say is that you like pretty things to look at. Because that's all SC is right now.
The AC was regarded by most as underwhelming with lots of bugs and very jerky arcadey ship controls. There is negligible engine sound or ambient sounds with just the whooosh in the background for movement. The laser sounds are as generic as they can get with extremely monotonous pew-pew. Heck, there is not even anything to do except for queue for arena matches compared to E:D where are there 50+ systems to explore, trade while engaging in PvE/PvP fights. You play E:D and you see the Universe for what it is even if the game isn't as good looking as SC is. The flares from the stars, the rotation and revolution of moons, planets and binary stars and not to mention the expanse of the Milky way in its true size. I am bringing out all of these features because you are saying that what i mentioned here pales in comparison to a pew-pew based arena fighting game which doesn't even have good controls. The only possibility here is that you prefer graphics over gameplay or you prefer arcadey gameplay over immersion-based gameplay. IF it ever releases with ALL the features promised then it might be worth discussing which is better.
And yes, i have backed for both of the games and have been playing them as well.
Yep, AC was completely underwhelming.
The beautiful visuals in which we get complete detail all the way down to laser and other damage marks on the ship and to components/subsystems.
Taking the damage to different components or subsystems causes the different failing in flight and combat.
Having a fully fledged fun and enjoyable arena that is already 10 times better than Star Conflict or a slew of other space games that have come out.
On top of what is already available:
A hangar full of wicked looking ships and weapons, as well as a buggy to get around in.
A truly amazing writing staff that has already brought a level of immersion through the website alone.
I mean all those alphas and games starting out that offered SO MUCH MORE, I just better hang up my helmet now and go play entropy.
J/K - After reading this forum thread and realizing how much I already love the game I think I am going to buy another ship.
Yellow - As i said earlier, only graphics which is what you guys seem to prefer. You have listed 2 plus points among the 3 of AC as graphics based. What does that tell you? Wicked looking ships? What does that do except lying in the hangar?
Besides that, all the lighting effects are present in E:D as well. You will see the effects on your HUD which are different for different weapons.
Red - You can do it in both games. There is the amount of Power transferred to Systems/Engines/Weapons in E:D which can be micromanaged for speed, manoeuvrability, shield strength and weapons power including hear generated. Heck, in E:D you can blow out the cargo hatch by aiming at it and jettison their cargo or claim it for yourself.
Green - An Arena consisting of just 2 maps only and 1 game mode. Yea, ok it is the best arena mode ever released.
Cyan - Read a novel then?
And yes, by all means, go and buy a new ship which you can stare at for the next 2-3 years. I am sure that will just motivate them towards making less of monetary stuffs (which, in my opinion, they have very less of right now) and more of the actual game.

IMO right now there's really no contest between SC and ED. SC is a buggy tech demo with a flight system even the developers don't like. It will most definitely be better, and I expect there will eventually be a great game in there, but it's way too early right now. There's a good reason for why Elite is the game people are streaming on Twitch, despite SC having umpteen times more backers. There's really only one BDSSE at the moment and nothing out there seems remotely capable of taking the title from Elite's firm grasp.
Hopefully in a few years SC will turn out as good as Elite. I think they will get there, but it's obvious that Chris has got a LOT of hard work ahead of him. Between the two of them, I hope there will also be room for some of the smaller projects such as Limit Theory and No Man's Sky. This genre needs to be back with a vengeance.
Respectfully, Vendetta is in a whole different category than BSGO.
