Non point/click MMORPGs?

HeartcloudHeartcloud Member Posts: 2

I'm looking for non-point/click MMORPGs (or "action MMORPGs" as some label themselves), cause point/click ones just bore the hell out of me, involve little or no skill and are all "whoever can stay awake clicking the exact same thing the longest will win".

Games I've played or know that are non-point/click:

- Lunia: this was actually the most impressive non-point/click MMORPG (or should be called an MMOAG) I've played. Involves pretty much zero repeated content until about 80% to max level (then the grinding starts), uses arrow keys to move/dodge, almost like playing an arcade game. 50% skill-based, 50% gear-based. Boss fights are almost all based on skill (timing, key combinations). Too bad this game is discontinued...

- Tera: To be honest this game is very nice. It's very challenging, and boss fights are mostly based on skill. Not too much grinding either. The reason why I quit this game is because after getting to max level, the content pretty much stops. Also the community in this game is rather... unfriendly

- Vindictus: Looks pretty good however I heard the game has a ton of grinding, and the game is slowly phasing out with no new content

- Blade & Soul: So far the most promising "upcoming" action MMO, too bad we don't know when this game is coming out in North America...

- Black Gold: Another great "upcoming" title with no known release date...

- Aura Kingdom: Terribly disappointing, at first I thought this was a cartoon version of Devil May Cry (seeing from the gameplay videos), then it turns out to be a WASD version of a point/click game. The amount of grind and content repetition is just ridiculous. Even the LANDSCAPE (same old grasslands, same enemies, same NPCs) looks exactly the same for the first 20 levels... unbelievable. Oh and it's insanely easy which of course involves no skills whatsoever. Combat is extremely glitchy too

Seems Asia is producing a wave of epic non-point/click MMORPGs, don't know when those games will come over here...

Not looking for MMOFPS or MMORTS. Those I prefer to play single-player.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I'm not sure what you're looking for.  Do you mean that you want action MMORPGs, or want to avoid action MMORPGs?  Does non-point/click mean that you're primarily trying to avoid using a mouse, and prefer keyboard only or perhaps a gamepad?  Do you mean that you're mainly interested in WASD movement as opposed to running to the spot where you clicked?

Some MMORPGs claim to be "action MMORPG" but are still 99% point-and-click. By point-and-click I mean you click to move, then click or tab-target to target an enemy, then just spam skills with numbers 0-9 while usually standing still.

I'm looking for games like Lunia and Tera where you actually have to have some gaming skills, like timing, dodging and key combinations to defeat enemies. You can't just stand still and spam 0-9 and expect to win. These games resemble playing an actual game and makes grinding more interesting. Usually these games have WASD movement (I don't see how it's possible to time dodges and stuff with mouse).

If you're looking for action combat, you should definitely look into Spiral Knights.  It's a multiplayer online game, but not really an MMORPG, as party size is capped at 4 in areas with combat.  Probably the nearest comparison in combat that comes to mind is the early Zelda games.  If you're good, you can sometimes clear entire levels without taking damage at all.  Dodging matters more than aiming, to the degree that a gamepad (which usually makes dodging easier and aiming harder) is an advantage over keyboard+mouse.

I'll throw out a couple of other games that may or may not interest you.  Guild Wars 2 is mostly the tab target combat that you don't like, but you do dodge sometimes to avoid the "big" attacks.  Champions Online has combat that depends on timing a lot.  No aim is necessary, but you can block at any time to take about 20% of normal damage while blocking.  The idea is that you block the "big" attacks that you don't want to run away from, then attack the rest of the time.  Again, that might not be what you're after, but it's more actionish than average as MMORPGs go.

Among the games you list, I've only played TERA.  A lot of attacks there want to go in the direction of the camera, which makes things really awkward.  It's certainly more action than normal, but it's hindered by awkward controls.  It's also hindered by stupidly easy combat (e.g., you kill mob in 2 hits, mob kills you in 20), with soloing things designed for groups about the only way to get any challenge up to level 30, at which point I quit.

ESO combat comes pretty close to single-player ES combat, with first-person targeting and stuff

I've only ever played a few point and click to move MMOs....why are you having such a hard time?

Darkfall Unholy Wars and RaiderZ is not on your list OP both are action type mmorpg.

    My opinion

Firefall. Solid free MMOFPS/TPS in the vein of Tribes (remember the jetpack gunfights? Yeah, they're here.) Mostly a PvE experience, but it's a good one at what it does. Nice item store too, opens up differing ways to play. Also, the biotech class has poison farts.

I've recently learned to love MMOFPS games like Wildstar and Firefall, maybe you should give these two a try. Action is frenetic and you really can't go wrong with sci fi shooters.

I assume you mean Black Desert ? black Gold is an oldschool tab target mmo, that looks and plays like a cheap indie game.

anyway, Black Deserts korean open beta will be in november, and eu/na beta around jan/feb. I'm personally just living in mmo celibacy until then, because why bother since nothing comes even close to that game in any way, shape or form.

and yes, for the next generation of games you have to look to the asian part of the world, especially korea, this is where most of our AAA games will come from. The west have tried for 10 years now and continuously dropped the ball over and over, it's time to pass the ball to people that know what they are doing.

The only thing from the west that might be at least semi-interesting will be eq-next, but that remains to be seen, it's still years from release. My money is on black desert.

Anybody got into Firefall? I second my own recommendation, I did not fully realize until a couple weeks experience in it that it IS that good a breakthrough in MMO shooter RPGs. It does a lot of things right for me, especially in PvE (PvP is non-existent virtually, but is a non-issue for me).
