Best superhero MMO

MMOman101MMOman101 Member UncommonPosts: 1,787

I am looking to play a superhero MMO.  In your opinion what the is best one and why.  I just got done trying Marvel Heroes 2015 and did not like it much.

I am looking for an MMO where I can create my own superhero and it has WASD movement.

Also it needs to be on PC not console.

Thanks in advance.

“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

Since CoH is closed down, all I'm aware of is DC Universe Online, and Champions Online.

At this moment. DC Universe Online all the way.

Now we EU players are back to SOE again, after the Prosieben debacle and all my games back on my MAIN SOE account.

I am playing DCUO regularly again and love it. It's a very good game. And when you pay for All Access (which gives Access to all SOE games) you have Access to all DLC content and thus all available powersets.

Yep, CoH would've been my first answer too. You'll have to settle for one of the others.

You can also keep an eye on the Phoenix Project and hope it goes somewhere. It'd be nice to have something like CoH again.

You missed it, City of Heroes shut down almost two years ago to prop up Guild Wars 2.

It says something that even after all this time CoH still has fans who want to play again.

    Companies, take note!

It still had very active servers when NCSoft decided to kill it off. And was still profitable according to the devs at Paragon Studios.

Unfortunately most companies aren't too keen on copying on a game that "died". Not to mention the other competitors in the superhero genre never managed to do all that great.

I think you could say that there really isn't a "best" right now.

As you found out Marvel Heroes isn't really an mmorpg. It is an mmo-whateverdiablowas. Fun if that is what you are looking for but not a lot of depth really.

DCUO - as a kind of action combat system that relies heavily on combos. It becomes very obvious that it was designed for a console but for having such a design it works pretty well on a pc. You don't get a lot of free form design options up front but everything you equip adds to your list of accessible styles. It is a good system compared to most mmos but very limited compared to what people are used to in Super Hero mmos. The biggest upside of DCUO is that it is SOE is very active in its development. Updates are coming out constantly. They just added guild halls in fact this last week. There is a lot of content in it.

Champions Online - has a much better character creator. Very free form. Second only to City of Heroes but that was shut down for reasons most still don't understand or believe. The combat system is more traditional with tab targeting. I personally like it better than DCUO. The character creation system is also more open ended on how you can put together powersets to create a very unique custom class. Unfortunately this ability is put behind a huge pay wall in that you have to have gold access to do freeform characters. But if you pay for that you get a very customizable system.  The community in CO is also great, it leans pretty heavy toward the RP. And there are a ton of players that use CO simply as a system to create and play around with their own superhero or super villian concepts. Some people create very extensive backstories for their characters.

The big downside of CO is that it doesn't get very good support from Cryptic which is now owned by Perfect World. There hasn't been a lot of new content in a long time. Little bits here and there but nothing really big. They have mostly just been developing new stuff for the cash shop. People hope that they will eventually port the foundry from STO and NW over to CO but I am not going to hold my breath, even though I think it would be the perfect thing for a superhero game. You let people create heroes, why not whole comic books?

Mostly we are in a holding pattern waiting for the second coming of City of Heroes in the likes of City of Titans. But that project is still years from being done. But, some day.

In the end, you have to ask yourself if you are looking for a better character creation environment (Champions Online) to be creative in or are you looking for a better game (DCUO) to play in.

    All die, so die well.

City of Heroes was BEST. I wish it was still around! maybe City of Titans will come out in this decade?

I played DCUO on console and I found that I do not MMOs on consoles.  It is very hard to communicate with other people.

If you play DCUO on PC can you actually have a conversation?

I am downloading CO now.  I think customization in a MMO is important.

Does anyone know what the player to player communication is like in in CO and DCUO?

IIRC, it's your standard MMO chat window. With your /say, shout, whispers, all the different channels, etc. There might be mic support for parties, not sure though.

There are some games that have a very limited chat function.   You did not really answer the question as to if these games do have one.

CO has a good system. Emotes and custom channels. RP players use a lot of custom channels. I was in a guild that kept all communication to text chat because voices took away from immersion. It worked just fine. Channels and friends lists also work across all cryptic games so if you know people from NW or STO you can get to them easy.

DCUO is a bit more clunky but not bad if you are on a pc. Again the base UI has some of the console concepts still in it but they have made lots of improvements over the years.

Both have built in voice chat but I have never run into people in either game that really use it.

    ^ Pretty much this.

You'll have to ask yourself, though, what are you REALLY looking for in a superhero MMO? The reason I ask is DCUO and CO are different enough to warrant playing both. Story? Immersion? Powers? Looks?

Do you want to subscribe? If not then your choices are limited in game. I play both, but personally, I prefer DCUO. The chat took some time to get used to. The UI was a complaint from the start, interesting that people are still complaining about it.

CO has a lot going for it - Are you aware that in CO at level 25 you can create a Nemesis and have a mini arch throughout the game? It's a wonderful feature that sadly hasn't been updated. That's a major feature that people seem to ignore when compairing these two - future updates. DCUO has that beaten by a long shot.

However, it is possible in CO, through grinding, to unlock most features in the game without paying a cent.

With all that said, why not play all of them? They're different enough for different reasons to scratch that Superhero itch.

I will try CO first.  I will probably download DCUO too.  I do not have the time to play both, but I can try both.  I was not sure if there was another superhero MMO out there that I was not aware of.  I do keep up on MMOs like I used to nor do I have to time to play them like I used to.

I think it more had to do with dwindling population, it was a pretty good game but when Cryptic sold it the game was already losing players.

The superhero MMO sun genre never been able to get the really huge sub numbers, maybe because it might need some new and totally different mechanics from fantasy MMOs.

D&D styled combat have it's advantages but it is not optimal for superheroes. That said it was still a bad day when they closed the game, CO never really managed to replace it and it had some rather fun ideas but I think the big superhero game is still in the future. One that really have the comic feeling.

OP: CO if you want something more tradition, DCU if you want more action... there is also Marvels game which is a bit different from most MMOs but your selection is sadly very limited.

Well, CoH / CoV would have that title, but that game is shut down.

Next best is DC Universe Online (which is actually a surprisingly good game).

Last would be Champions Online. (A decent game, but not nearly as good as the above two)

There is another diablo-esque super hero MMO, but last I tried it it was garbage. I think it's called Marvel Heroes or something. Has little depth, you can't make your own hero, and it's built around the idea that you'll give up and pay to buy cooler heroes.

Played CoH for a long time and couldn't get into DCUO, the hero creation didn't feel as deep / have as many options...might have changed. God I miss CoH
