MMO Shooters are TERRIBLE. They are so clunky and sloppy.
I want a MMO Shooter that performs as smooth and accurate as Quake Live or Call of Duty 4.
Screw that. There is only Unreal Tournament. (The earlier titles, not 3).
Hehe, during my UT gaming period I feel it's the most responsive FPS game there is. Obviously there is allot more going on in most of today's FPS games. But am hopefull to see what happens with:
Work on the future of Unreal Tournament has begun and we’re happy to announce that we’re going to do this together, with you. We know that fans of the game are as passionate about Unreal Tournament as we are. We know that you have great ideas and strong opinions about where the game should go and what it should be. So let’s do something radical and make this game together, in the open, and for all of us.
On topic I would like to see a MMORPG shooter in the way Battlefiled meets FarCry, shakes hands with GTA and all come together at a RPG meeting. Like in farcry you can pick up any vehicle but they will be low on stats/fuel. In the shooter MMORPG I would like the crafters (Engineer) who could enhance/upgrade your found/stolen vehicle to a certain limit or build you a new one with materials found scattered around the warzones's and go beyond that what can be upgraded. Option to choose to liberate a village/town/city which could open up new stores and other type of social feature's.
Bring in the "holy" trinity in cause it makes sense as no soldier should be able to do all so doc/medics profeesion can also be added. .
In short a MMORPG shouter for me needs to go far beyond of that what normal multiplayer FPS games already offer to me.
Anyone watching Sword Art Online 2? The anime portraits a player skill based MMOFPS. I'd play it if it were available. Whats interesting is that whenever you fire a gun everyone sees a prediction line of the bullets path which gives you a chance to dodge.
--- Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
You guys need to check out DayZ Standalone too. It's alpha, but the game will be unbelievable when it is finished. It is basically a Sandbox MMOFPS. Right now its miss the first M in MMO but hopefully that will change in the future.
Halo really satisfied this itch for me, the stats, headsets, etc. the only real difference is seeing a player in or out of a zoned area. Sobriety compromised.
I love shooters, I just hate multi-player PvP shooters. I can't stand CoD or Planetside 2 or anywhere that some other player is shooting at you and you're expected to shoot back. Give me a good single-player shooter like Halo and I'm happy. Otherwise, I hate that genre with a burning passion.
The only MMOFPS/TPS I can remember that I've played is Firefall and Warframe (which isnt a true MMO).
Firefall is an OK game. I say OK as it can get boring from time to time. Personally I have played Firefall on and off for years and I always enjoy it when I return for a month or two.
Warframe I just jump into now and then for 30 min or so when I am bored. It's a good game to enjoy for short burst (personally atleast). While others play it day and night. Same thing with Firefall.
I am waiting for 40k Eternal Crusade. It's said to be done in 18 months from now so, just have to wait and see.
Destiny. You can argue semantics about it being an MMO, and it is console only, but it is also a really good FPS in it's own right.
Which is something that has always bugged me about MMO FPS / RTS games. Why is it that as soon as they 'go MMO' the devs / publishers think it's OK to drop quality through the floor? Take Firefall for instance, not a bad game overall, but taken purely as a shooter (i.e. it's main gameplay) it's pretty damn poor.
Edit: Just saw that the OP mentioned destiny earlier and cited lack of depth / customisation... while kinda true of beta (capped at level 8), if you have a look at the skill board (there is a level 29 titan gameplay demo video around somewhere) it looks like there will be plenty of customisation later on.
As a quick rundown, you have 3 grenade types, several mods for stats, 3 (I think) modifiers for super, plus several misc. modifiers / abilities (e.g. titan shoulder charge)... and that's just one branch of one class. Multiply by 3 classes with 2 branches each (e.g. lightning titan vs. void titan), mix in weapon types for main, special and heavy (with several sub types per type.. slow firing, powerful auto rifle vs. fast firing auto rifle with large mag) and that's a lot of potential combos.
Also, from what customisation there was in beta it seems choices will matter, both for personal preference / play-style and for what you're character is capable of.

And I am very much looking forward to Destiny. We can argue semantics about it being an MMOFPS or not being an MMOFPS, but it is, at the end of the day, a highly social FPS with sporadic mmo-esque persistence.
Originally posted by Beelzebobbie I agree why can't we get a battlefield mmo that would be sooooo sweet, no zooming out just a pure fps shooter and without lasers and with real guns and objetives.
Because battlefield is good enough? I don't think it adds a lot of fun if you make the maps persistent.
I think FireFall is great. It does stand out on its own, not just graphics-wise but it's not like other MMO's out there in its gameplay. Also, with the current updates and other planned improvements, it could very well go better.

I'm glad the devs turned it around from before! it was looking bleak then but thankfully that's all in the past now.
out of all the mmofps/tps out there Fallen Earth and Hellgate had the most potential to be a sweet MMO shooter/rpg, and both fell flat on their faces. The other ones mentioned by the OP have short term fun because they all focused on the wrong priorities and left a lot of quality of life content/features out of the game and now its too late.
Planetside 2 right now is the most fun IMO but that is just a more massive version of Battlefield so theres not much to do other than shoot, fly, ride and capture, rinse and repeat.
I loved Hellgate London, played everyday. Not sure why it closed the population felt healthy and everything.
My bad guess it still is playable, another studio picked it up

It closed because Flagship not only messed up the subscription model, but they started developing a second game (Mythos) before Hellgate had even released. Because of this, the team was split, causing updates and patches to take inordinate amounts of time. It also quickly depleted Flagship's funds, so idiot Bill Roper made a deal with the devil (the current owner of the game and IP) for more cash, with the rights to the games and the games themselves as collateral. Flagship then defaulted on the loan and lost everything.
Bill Roper completely screwed over every fan of that game. Yet the fat bastard walked away scot-free, and last I heard has a nice cushy job at Marvel Comics. How someone with such immense, publicly documented incompetence managed to land a job most of us can only dream about, I'll never understand. I'm going to guess that hookers, drugs, and sexual favors factored heavily into it. I'm also not ruling out some form of mind control either.
AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!
We are born of the blood. Made men by the blood. Undone by the blood. Our eyes are yet to open. FEAR THE OLD BLOOD.
I can say that Planetside 2 will draw you in really well. I've spent copious hours on it altogether, but yes, it got tiring. Haven't Defiance yet, as I got sidetracked by WildStar (which is pretty okay for me). I'll take the OP's word for it if it's THAT bad. Then we have FireFall, as well, and is slick and enjoyable, but I haven't had enough time to get into it. With the number of MMO's out there these days, it may seem that there are more bad than good, but really, I think it boils down to personal preferences - what you choose to try out and what you eventually stick to.
If you don't like any of the current titles you probably won't like any of the ones that will be released in the future.
I get the feeling people that want MMOFPS want to have a game that gives them the emotional satisfaction of both geners folded together into one game. I just don't see that happening, because the what gives each game its emotional resonance will not tie neatly together.
To answer your question; yes, what you want is probably too much to ask for.
“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

I kinda like vanilla Coke, but you are right that trinity shooters suck.
If you make a FPS game you need to use some variation on FPS mechanics.
Offense, defense and support still works though.

I would keep an eye on Eternal Crusade, though it's not due out for over a year. Sorta a cross between Planetside 2 and Space Marine.
This very website runs an article on Eternal Crusade every other week, take a look and see if that might be your cup o tea.

Developers can't even make a good MMORPG and you expect them to make a good MMOFPS game?
Don't get your hopes up.
there's a slight chance that TOXIKK.com will develop into an MMOFPS one day.
because Reakktor made Neocron
if you haven't tried Darkfall, definitely do that.

If PS2 were made like PS1,I'd still be playing to this day.
I just hate the cookie cutter pre-made classes.Certifications were much, much better. Also the 1 manned tank spam gets old.

the clostest thing to a real mmo shooter (and not just a silly gankfest) was actually planet side 1 imo.
petty they dumbed down part 2 to be some "huge" battlefield instead of planetside.
"believe me, mike.. i calculated the odds of this working against the odds that i was doing something incredibly stupid and i did it anyway!"
