Best build cusomization

MMOman101MMOman101 Member UncommonPosts: 1,787

What MMO has the best build customization for a free to try or free to play game.  I recently played the superhero games and although CO has very nice customization in appearance the builds in game are very lackluster.

I have played Rift, it might be the best out there now.

I have played TSW and was not impressed at all.

I am looking for a true MMO too, not a lobby game.

What I really want is as much ability to customize my players build as possible.  Skills, Talents, Attributes, Abilities.  As much as possible.

Anyone know any games that might be decent.

Edit: The game can be smaller.  It does not have to be a AAA MMO.

“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

well that level of customization is more of a characteristic of Action rpgs like path of exile or diablo franchise games.

ESO, Eve and WoW all have a good amount of customization but are behind the pay wall.

albion online and archage both have decent amount of customization and F2P models but arent releasing til later this year/ early next year.

Would say Rift.  I think it gives a little to much build freedom truthfully. There's almost no limitations to any core class. That can all do everything to some extent. Biggest turn off for me personally. That's a different topic though.

I have played WoW, and am not going back to that game.

Eve, is not really a game that I am interested in.  I find it the MMO equivalent to watching golf.

I have not tried ESO. I guess I will try it in ~year when it gets some sort of FTP.

I might try AA when it comes out.  I have not heard of Albion yet.  I will look into that.

the problem with the current games that offer build customization is that all of them have 1 cookie cutter build per role and if you dont use that you will probably be rejected from group content. Until different builds are fully viable for each role, we wont have a real build customization option.

The problem is you assumed that I cared about being rejected from group content and cookie cutter builds.

Not everyone plays MMO to gain status.  Some people just like having fun with a game and enjoy having the ability to create their characters the way they want.

Builds don't have to be fully viable, my experience has been MMOs are pretty damn easy so as long as you don't putz the build up, even if you are not the most optimal, the game can still be fun and build can still work.

Eldevin might be worth a shot. You can invest points into any class tree, so you can make like a hybrid fireball-casting rogue or whatever you feel like mixing together.

Honestly, Dragon's Nest had my favorite talent system I've ever seen in an MMO.  I didn't play the game for very long, and the level cap was only 25 in the West at the time I did play, but it was still so rewarding and satisfying to plan out your character's progression, even at that level.

At the time, the game was basically increasing the level cap by 5 levels every few months until they caught up to the cap in Korea.  So they kind of implemented an "end game-ish gear grind" you could work on over and over again, if that's your kind of thing.  But that was all years ago.  I have no idea where the game's at now.

Yep, it's more of a Path of Exile thing.

As far as build customization goes on actual MMO's The Secret World is one of the better ones. If that one failed to impress then I'd recommend waiting for the last two on that list - Albion Online and ArcheAge.

I gotta disagree with WoW though, after they revamped the skill system during MoP it's probably one of the least customizable MMO's out there when it comes to builds. ESO's definitely provides more freedom.

You can also try Neverwinter Online, it's free anyway, and it might be to your tastes.

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

And once again I will say that if you haven't tried Fallen Earth you are certainly missing out on one of the better MMO's out there.    And by that I am talking gameplay.

Complete ability to build your character as you choose.   Check it out and see what you are missing.

FFA Nonconsentual Full Loot PvP ...You know you want it!!

Second that. And with the ~new system even mages are viable.

The skill system is not your typical, line1 10pts line2 15pts. You have 8 attributes which if raised increase the skill cap of different skills.  Then you put points into those lines to unlock skills and the ability to wear better weapons/armor and/or some passiv effect.

i.e. Melee uses 50% coordination and 50% strength, so if you are at the melee cap then you have to raise coord and/or str before you can raise Melee again. And if you want to wield f.e. a Tesla Hammer then you need 168 Melee so you need at least x str and y coord.

There are some general tips like "at least xx in First Aid" to get a basic self heal but I've seen chars doing fine without it. So if you are not into perfect min-max'ing then that works too. And unless you are standing around afk groups wont kick you even with a screwed up build.
