Gaming in Asia... or not?

Emailbox911Emailbox911 Member Posts: 3

I've been playing MMOs for a long time now. Being from France, I never really had problems related to ping / latency even when playing games on NA servers. However, I moved to China in 2011 (Beijing) and things are getting hard. Basically, I would like to play one of the big titles in ENGLISH as my Chinese reading (or Korean, or Japanese) isn't that good. The problem is, none of the big AAA titles seem to have any oceanic servers these days. I know some games have their own local publishers in Asia (mainly Tencent in China) but the language remains a barrier for me.

I've tried to play several NA server MMOs from Asia (Lineage II, ESO, Neverwinter...) but the connection is not reliable even with the best VPN service (I use strongVPN and have tried many others). My girlfriend doesn't seem to mind the horrible lag and disconnects and has been playing ESO from launch but I quickly gave up myself.

Anyway, are there any big AAA titles with SEA (maybe Singapore?) servers or hosted in China/Korea/Japan with English language available for the game client? Any answers appreciated!

Edit: I forgot to mention, anything but WoW and the DoTa / LoL franchises...

Guild Wars 2 recently released in China. Plus the other ones mentioned by the poster above me.

    Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I've played GW2 back when it was released and it wasn't really my thing, ended up giving it to my younger brother who loves it.

I've tried to create a Final Fantasy XIV game account but their website appears to be down for maintenance sadly (2 days already).

Tried Archlord 2 as I ended up on their game page somehow but there is no SEA server and it's laggy from China.

Now trying PSO2; their website is really slow and keeps timing out but I managed to register and grabbed the torrent.

Any big Korean titles that have an English client option out there?

For those of you who are in the same basket, I tried a few things:

In order to play Final Fantasy XIV, you need to create a Square Enix master account. I mentioned that the website was under maintenance but just realized that China is in fact IP blocked. I was able to go through just fine with a VPN. Anyway, I'm not sure if the actual game servers (Japanese or else) IP block China but it's probably very likely so I gave up as well.

However, I was able to download and play Phantasy Star Online 2. Again, ALL countries except Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia are IP blocked, including China (I mean... seriously?). I decided to purchase a cheap extra VPN service provider (FlyVPN) that offers Asian servers (all of the the countries mentioned above) just to try (I must be really bored and desperate!) and was able to fix the issue (accessing websites, downloading game client and playing the game very smoothly). I played the first PSO years ago which was not really my cup of tea; PSO2 has been entertaining so far but the lack of PvP / multiplayer focused environment is a real downer for me.

After running ping and speed tests, I realized that China's connectivity to Korea is actually VERY good (like 60ms average). I might just wait for the retail version of BLESS Online or Black Desert to come out there and then try to find an English translated client or just start brushing up my Korean...

Anyway, hope that helps other people in the same case.

Oh, not quite an MMO but Minecraft has tons of worldwide servers, for the record.
