Now, I've been somewhat intrigued by Archeage but there are some factors to why I'm not excited for it. I'll list them below:
- Hotbar Combat.
- Lack of significant aesthetic difference between races. e.g. length, build and so on.
- Hostile freemium? (Haven't experienced it first hand so I can't say)
- Hackshield* (I'll talk about it later)
But it also has redeeming factors such as:
- Piracy.
- Murder.
- Punishment for said piracy and murder.
- Ships.
- Labour Points. (It ought to reduce some botting, right? And I don't plan on playing 8 hours non-stop)
Mark my words, there is no actually pirate MMO out there. None. Doesn't exist. There are pirate-themed MMOs but it's not piracy. For example, if everyone is a pirate it's not piracy because it's the norm. If you cannot take
prizes from others or be able to operate similar to how pirates would in real life.
There are games based on this, but they are designed to be like that. In those games you won't be punished for being a pirate, you won't be thrown out of society nor really punished for your misdeeds. Piracy needs to occur naturally as it did back in the golden age. Merchants had goods and gold that pirates wanted, mercenaries could protect traders and traders could pay the mercenaries.
Now that I've described what I desire out of piracy in a game I'd like to know a few things:
- Can ships be stolen from others or can the ones you steal it from just "unsummon" the ship?
- If so, will the goods remain on the ship or will they be dropped as the ship phased out of existence?
- What effects will piracy have on the player? Infamy and punishment?
There's one more thing I want to know;
How does the court trials work? As I've understood it's completely based on infamy. I don't know how you are caught or what happens afterwards but I do know that you will be found guilty or innocent.
But what's the point? If you get arrested because of infamy it's obvious that you're guilty. Can an innocent person ever be arrested? It's really confusing.
Thank you all for reading and in advance for your answers!
*Hackshield and Gameguard are like oral-herpes. Minor inconveniences that you'd rather not have but won't bother you too much. Only difference is that herpes stays with you for ever and rootkits like Hackshield and Gameguard takes about 30 to 120 minutes to remove completely from your computer.
Actually, that should be their new slogan: "Not quite as bad as herpes". Thank me later, Asia.

My answers are based on videos and 'research', not 1st hand experience, only got to about 20ish on the beta. People will correct me where i'm wrong no doubt
1 can't un summon if your ship is in combat, you can steal them for 10 minutes or so before they auto de summon there is also a short lock that can prevent people from driving your ship for a couple minutes
2 not sure never tried I feel like the packs ought to not de summon but I have no basis to say one way or another
3 it takes a ton of infamy to become a pirate, pirates that die on the 2 main continents end up in prison
Thank you! Very helpful information. I'm a bit disappointed by the legal system. Why would anyone be found innocent if everyone who ends up in court is guilty? Maybe they'll plead that they killed botters, gold farmers and spammers but I wonder if that would stop people from inflicting that debuff on them.
There is one more question though:
Can you decorate your own ships or visually upgrade them?
And finally, I stand corrected. Darkfall does have piracy and ships! I don't know if the enemy ships are NPC controlled or if the ships are used for transporting cargo and so on by players. But I wonder if pirates are cast out of society? Or if it's just a feature with no lasting consequence.
I'm just happy that no one said "EVE". Whilst it's true and that they do have ships it was really outside the theme I was going for.
2) A ship with cargo can not be banished and will not despawn. You can not loot another players boat cargo but you can destroy the boat. This will cause the heavier packs to fall to the ocean floor and the lighter packs to float. You can take them then.
3) You will gain infamy from the player kill. Taking someone's trade pack and turning it in or destroying the boat will not give infamy.
4) When you die in PvP after having acquired at least 50 points of infamy, you will go to trial. If you are found guilty, you will be thrown into prison. This is in game time that must be served or you can try to escape. If found innocent, your infamy will be removed. Once you've acquired 3000 infamy, you will be banished to pirate isle.
Now most people are found guilty but it's not that simple. Let's say a guild hijacks your ship and takes your cargo. Three days later you see those guys again and you kill them. You get infamy for killing them but are you guilty? You just wanted a little revenge, you may be found innocent. There's a lot of politics at trial, friends getting on friends jury, etc.
Thank you! Is it worthwhile to be a pirate then? If a lot of the cargo sinks?
Also, is it possible to decorate your own ship or upgrade it visually? I asked it in the post above and I reckon you might've missed it.
Note: You can dive for trade packs that end on the ocean floor.
Yes, you can decorate your own ships. You can even import images from out of game to be used on your flag. Long live the rainbow AIDS banner.
That all sounds fantastic, aside from the Rainbow Aids Banner. Too bad you can't go to the pirate island for the act of piracy.
Could you describe how the piloting of the boat handles? Cheers!
Edit: Can you purchase land or a farm on Pirate Island?
The Clipper, the smallest of the ships handles well, in my experience. You can furl the sail to get better handling, at the cost of speed.
Right now you can only add a logo to the sails. In 1.7 ( No clue as to when thatll get to NA/EU0 You can do many more things to ships.
As a Pirate the only place you can purchase land is on the pirate island.
Essentially, the trial is about whether or not the crime was justified or essentially, 'you are guilty what will your sentence be".

They dont. Its per char, not account.
Problem with ship combat is when two ships see each other, they unsummon before combat as it's instant...stupid...needs a summon bar or the smaller ship always unsummons.
