Gliders look dumb

EberhardtEberhardt Member UncommonPosts: 157
Am I the only one who thinks these gliders look really dumb? I mean logically they just dont work. I understand its a fantasy world, but we cant completely throw physics out the window...You place yourself on top of a glider like that and its going nowhere but down and fast! And I get it...they were trying to be really creative, but thats just silly. Im downloading the beta right now as I got my invite this morning so ill see all the systems and gliding for myself. Though I played aion back in the day and its gliding was pretty solid. It was difficult to master but once you did it was incredibly useful. So if their gliding can manage to beat aions, then ill be impressed.

Your Starting Glider is not all that impressive, but the gliders obtained further in, go for great distances, have attack functions.  Great method of travel in game especially those hard to reach areas :)

I of course am referring solely to their aesthetics. I definitely understand the usefulness of gliding - again I came from Aion where gliding was the number one method of locomotion. My only gripe is their illogical look. I thought the same thing 2 years ago when I first saw the first trailer for archage - "Man that glider looks so dumb". Again, I get that they were trying to be creating, but there is such a thing as trying too hard. A good example of this:

you can mix a bird and a lion together...okay. I'm fine with this.

you want to mix a bird, lion, snake, woman, bear, pig, and a fairy together? Now you're just trying too hard.

perhaps if they had a backpack of some sort that could expand and retract the wings on command? Even that would be a bit more believable than the gliders they have now.

That was probably the crap starting glider, here there are almost all (from 9:37)

All one needs is a little pixie dust...  I believe!  I believe!  I believe I can fly!

Uh, yeah, well, whenever you notice something like that... a wizard did it.

On a more serious note, Asian games are usually more about "style" and representation than trying to obey the laws of physics.

large swords, high heels, armor that doesn't cover what it should cover.

They are more about the character and the look and feel of the character.

Those are cool and all, but you are still sitting ON TOP of the glider which is my issue to begin with. Its just not believable at all. One of the things that makes fantasy games, stories, and movies great is that, aside from having awesome stories and visuals, they are believable. You could almost believe that in some alternate universe Frodo really carried the ring to mordor, or that the dragonborn really did save all of humanity from the wrath of the dragons. Though we understand that they are fantasies...they are grounded in reality. You ever watch developer videos where they talk about how they came up with the desings for weapons and characters and creatures? They base this things in reality first...and then build from there.

Like I said...if the player didn't have to sit ON TOP of the glider I'd probably be fine with the thing. Its a really cool device and a good way to get around...it just looks so damn silly and unblievable.

If you can forego physics for other things, you can forego it for this... I mean really, you're wielding weapons larger than yourself... unless they are made out of paper, you're not going to be able to swing it... bows with unlimited arrows... fighting monsters the size of a skyscraper but your tiny little sword is going to kill it... yeah right.

If you can't believe flying on top of gliders, you can't believe the rest.  Selective believability in a fantasy RPG is just ridiculous.

The most rational thing that comes to mind as to why did they make it this way; if the glider was on top you couldn't be able to see under the skirt of female char as easily as it is with the glider below.

I agree, a glider of as a means of transport is fine... holding on to the top of the glider is not. You canna break the laws of physics Capt'n... unless you are playing a Korean MMO apparently...

Not to mention you are carrying 20 tons of equipment and mounts in your pocket..

A good point. But most things that have a function make their function apparent. That massive sword, though over sized, could still be swung even by most laws of physics. It would probably be sort of difficult to swing, but can still be swung. Something that is supposed to fire projectiles at a castle looks as though it is supposed to do that and communicates this to the player. Even koreans know to base things in logic to some degree because they are still human. Most armor designs, though impractical and somewhat fashionable are still logical. I mean they dont put a dishwasher or a fridge on a player and call it armor. I mean if I saw that fridge sitting on the ground I would have no idea that it is armor, but that metal bikini, though impractical, is still recognizable as something to wear...

This is actually the true purpose of the Boob slider...larger inventory. Mystery solved.

In the end it comes down to your suspension of disbelief.

If you can accept "magic" and elves and not ever having to rest then I think you can make the leap and just assume that it just works.

I imagine from a practical point of view it's so you can see your character as opposed to wings and some legs dangling.

This is also true. I think with any fantasy game, be it table top or an MMO, you have to unground yourself from this world and place yourself in that one. I still think the glider is silly though :P

If you think those physics are unbelievable, wait until someone shows you boat spinning lol! Although ridiculous, probably one of the funniest thing i've ever seen.

totaly agreed. what kind of person comes up with the idea to be upon a glider instead of hanging below it?

"we must do something different, any ideas?" "let's be ON the gilders! it's totaly new! no one ever did it!"

"believe me, mike.. i calculated the odds of this working against the odds that i was doing something incredibly stupid… and i did it anyway!"

Can i get hydrolics on my boat? Can i put spinners on it? Does it come with a Bose sound system?
