SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Alienware has announced that its console, set to be released later this year, will bring Steam gaming to the living room. The Alienware Alpha console will set users $549, with more powerful versions also available.

If you’ve been wanting to get Steam games into your living room — and don’t want to wait for Valve’s official Steam OS— Alienware is now ready to take your money. Interested buyers can now pre-order the Alienware Alpha console, which starts at $549. That’ll get you an Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB of RAM, 500GB of storage, and a custom Nvidia-based graphics card with 2GB of dedicated memory. Alienware is also selling a number of other configurations with more memory, hard drive space, and faster processors.

on paper...(meaning what real value can be brought) the Steam Machines should be able to completely obliterate consoles if the developers get on board.

Will it actually happen? I am watching closely :)

I'm sorry, but those spec's are terrible. If you want a couch experience with your pc games just attach your pc to your tv using a vga cable and plug your controller in. If you only have a wireless controller, invest in free bluetooth or use the hundreds of programs that can enable it.

    totally agree.

However...my question is why dont people do this? its been possible for more than a decade and yet for reasons I dont understand people want to play on lower spec devices.

    from article

While the lighter Linux-based operating system could eventually be a plus, right now it just means you have far fewer games to play because the Windows ones won't work — unless you already have a Windows-based gaming PC you can stream them from, an upcoming Steam feature.

There are more and more small form factor cases to build a console pc...mine is hardly larger than an xbone but has an i7, gtx 680 and 16gb ram....

I have been watching these steam machines and i just dont see what the point is. Its not hard to hook a PC up to a tv. Most games i enjoy function better with a mouse and KB then a controler.

Because the vast majority of PC games require a mouse and keyboard. Not exactly a couch experience.

It's not until last couple years that we got PC games that play well enough via controller. And all those games are multi platform, so then People just as well can just buy the console version and be sure it's optimized for controller.

A piece of wood and legs...that is what you need to make kb/m a couch experiance. I took a thin piece of wood, placed my keyboard and mouse on it and the whole complicated set on my knees. Comfortable enough that there is basically no difference in my perfomance, even in fast paced game, between sitting at my desk and using the knee board.

I'll never buy Alienware. They are even more overpriced than Apple since Dell bought them. Damn capitalism... Good thing there is Lenovo to set things right.

Paint the piece of wood black and sell it for $100 as a Professional Gaming Slate. You've got a goldmine there!

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

it sounds to me that you might have just answered the question as to why Steam Machine instead of PC. I didnt think about it but yeah I think that is the story right there. Steam Controller

Hey guys, this isn't a Steam Machine.  It comes with Windows 8.1.  Doesn't even come with the Steam controller.

When you're right you're right, Alienware is nothing more then an ugly looking pc that's overpriced by Dell. I can never understand why anyone would wanna buy something from Alienware or Dell.

It's not like they have better componments it's the same shit in there pc as in mine except mine looks alot better and didn't cost half of there price.

If you buy an Alienware then you have been fooled.

It already has a very nice black finish. I also sanded some grooves in so that the keyboard and mouse pad sit all snuggly. It means I can't sell it cause it's custom made for my specific keyboard and my hard razer mouse pad=) I am planning to add some nice chrome legs to make a tray of sorts.

Either way, some people make stuff like I did and other will buy the Roccat Sova, couch gaming with kb/m ladies and gentlmen.
