Even though I am looking forward to playing the Beta I must admit that I am having certain concerns regarding how 'controlled' the world is. By this I mean that sometimes less is more and even though Fantasy and 'Steampunk' are now prttey much understood by everybody I think that when you go too contemporary with having Skateboards and Hoodies along with white road-markings on medieval cobbles it becomes hard to take the game seriously.
There is no doubt that the game has a massive amount going for it. The non-instanced Housing creating player based settlements etc will be fantastic and the Naval aspect looks to virtually a game by itself. But I think they could be ruined with a lack of 'theme' moderation.
Imagine proudly standing upon your turreted home semi clad with armour plate and see someone with a cap on back to front pulling a Caravan with what appears to be a steampunk Volkswagon Beetle.
Or finally achieving that Genghis Khan look to be battling a guild wearing vests and levi 501's
It might just be that everyone wants a game with no boundries and the ultimate freedom to build whatever, be whatever. Though surely if you want to invest time into an online world too much surreal will become like playing Monty Python Online.
I think Trion will possibly have to moderate content to make it 'believable' because without a notion of restraint and control I cannot seeing it working in its present state for the long term in the West.
This is not a Troll post and for the record I also think WOW should never have delved into bringing Motorcycles and Rockets into it's game.... they don't work at all in my opinion and I think they could have put better efforts into war-chariots and carriages. But the very modern Hotrod / Sportscars in Archeage are just too hard to swallow....for me.

From what I saw, you won't have that problem or it won't be as bad as you think at least. There's only 1 "portal" that takes you to a more contemporary looking world and from there, you can only really buy the medieval/steampunk items. Although the cars... dunno how I feel about those...
I totally agree. Ironically talking of unlimited freedoms it all depends on how much freedom Trion has to temper and tailor the game itself.
