Ingame items for real life cash

Hi all,

just a quick thought and wondering what your opinion on this matter is.

My two cents to follow:

There is already a market for trading ingame items for cash in real life via ebay, etc. Do I agree with this? no not really but each to there own. My take on this is the game providers should offer offical auctions and support for this type of activity to ensure:

1) nobody gets cheated out of cash, maybe a system where cash is held by the company until bnoth parties confirm successful transfer of items.

2) The companies can add unique items from time to time.

If someone wants to buy a virtual item for cash, it needs to be regulated, and also, why not use this trade to fund game development and reduced monthly fees for players. If a % of players have enough money to spend on rare or unique items, why not use this extra money to make the game better for all.

Cheers,

buying items for cash is sick, u dont make the game better, u just skip the fun part searching for it, and when u bought the item, your a little bit stronger(but there are always better stuff to find), or maybe even the strongest, (what the hell is left to do then?)

imo u skip all the fun with wasting money for some collored picture, cause thats what u buy after all

Ok, this has been discussed MANY times. I won't even TRY and tell you the arguements for an against it. I will tell you that SOE has already embraced in game items/gold/character selling in EQ2 with the station exchange. Also expect it to show up in other SOE games. More and more games are going to have similar systems, and it will be that way. Why? Mainly because for every person who has the time to blow gathering excess currency/items, there's one professional buisness person that doesn't have as much time to play, but has the excess cash to spend for someone else to get the stuff for them. It's all about what your time is worth to you. End of story.

hmm, seems people have a lot stronger views against it than for it.

Brian - I wasn't looking for arguments for or against dude image, just wondered if other people thought it would be worth the dev companies taking a % cut of the sales and investing that back in the games, either via cheaper monthly fees for all, or in developing new content, expansions free of charge, or at a much reduced rate to the current costs. I'm all for cheaper costs to continue playing.

I am fully aware of SOE's stance, but imho, it is the only positive step they have taken towards combating the sale of items on ebay and looking after its customers (and of course adding a healthy profit to there annual figures). I hear of too many people getting ripped off buying items through ebay and not actually receiving them.

but as I said in the original post, if people would rather spend money than time gaining items, why should that not provide additional funding to make the game better for all?

If ppl want to spend the money to buy that stuff, then go for it. More power to them, I wish I could spend $150 on something that doesn't really exist.

Personally, I'm all for it. If I didn't dislike EQ2 so much, I'd play it to death as my job right now to make some extra cash LEGALLY, and not breaking the EULA. As for WoW...well, it's just say that Blizzard is getting kickbacks from IGE. No, I have no hard proof, but let me point some things out.

IGE has several companies that sell stuff in game. They do MANY trades a day. Yet they are never suffering any sort of mass bannings that regular players who do the same stuff. It's more than a little fishy if you ask me.

Project Entropia allows you to convert in game money to real money and vice versa at a fixed rate. As such, it's doing just as you'd like. Put time in, make money, transfer money out.

As for any other games, Roma Victor will be selling currency (capped at a set amount per person, per month). Not sure if they will allow people to sell currency to each other though.

If the station exchange seems to bolster SOE's profits substantially, then I'd say we'll be seeing more of it pretty soon.

Honestly that's a pretty ignorant post. Of course they "exist" just as your website exists, the internet exists, and the little new folder you create on your desktop exists. Just because something isn't tangible doesn't mean that it doesn't exist.

I for the most part don't have issues with buying things with RL cash, I do disagree with the Chinese campers that ruin *some* games by camping NMs and taking away an aspect of the game. I agree that MMO companies should put in an aspect where they sell things. That way the MMO is getting the cash and not some guy who made me unable to get the item because they were camping for it 24/7.

I'll sell any of my items for real cash, but not intrested in buying.

not so intrested as to browse ebay. but if someone offered me ingame I'd do it.

If you wan't to pay that's your business, and if you want to sell that's your business.
    we're all consenting adults.

People will farm monsters for drops. It makes no difference to me whether they are selling the items for in game cash or out of game cash.

As in real life, it does not exist. Do not correct me when you don't understand what I was talking about. Of course it exists as in the meaning of the word, but it doesn't exist as in it isn't tangible as you said.

I bet you have alot of IRL friends Mr. Know-It-All. Don't correct ppl when you clearly understand what they are saying, and you didl; you just wanted to make yourself sound smart.

Seems like only last week that mmorpg, com had a discussion about this, it was and the week before that etc etc. "Lard-arsed lazy westerner buys in game money from some destitute people - shock!" Whilst we all argue and counter argue someone at IGE etc is getting ever more filthy rich: therefore many people buy gold each and every week. It's not 10 or 20, they wouldn't do it if for a few we are talking hundreds. The only thing that exists is the perceived value placed on an item.

Has anyone checked PC gamer magazine? the febrary issue? that about sums up how I feel about IGE and the rest of those kind of companies.

Vultures, unwanted guests at a party that are feeding off the banquet where they are not welcome.

Lots of players look the other way while others like me totally detest them,I applauded Vangard when they disassociated themselves from vangaurd fansites that sold out to IGE.

Meaning they were released from the inner circle Vangaurd Fan Sites,so Kudos to Sigil...I know thats one mmorpg thats has said what they think of companies like ige.

To me they have no place in a MMO,especially if they had nothing to do in making the MMO product and offer it to people to play and enjoy.

IGE can go on any publicity spin it likes...company's like Sigil see them for what they are and as player so do I.
