I got this game for Christmas from my wife and was very excited to play it. I played Everquest a while back so my MMORPG experience is relatively limited. I do love Star Wars and couldn't wait to play. We recently upgraded our computer so I have top of the line equipment.
I have to say that overall I was disappointed. The first few weeks or so were great and I was very excited. My play time is limited somewhat due to work and family. I have played now for almost a month and am a level 59 Jedi. Today, I just couldn't log in anymore. For the last week I have not had that much fun. I picked the first galaxy I saw which was Ahazi but it doesn't seem like there are many that play there...
I did not get the add on with Obi-Wan because I wanted to see if I really liked it first. If what I have seen so far is any indication, I will not be purchasing any other "content".
I used to be a big HALO player and it seems like they are trying to copy that style but failing. Being a pretty big fan of the canon, I am pretty disappointed at the way Jedi is implemented. There should be very few or change the timeline altogether. How did Lucas Arts let this company get away with this? They even have to approve events in the books written in the timeline 20 years after the movies!
Well, I have given this game a month but I am certaintly not going to be paying them money for a subscription. As it stands now, I will be looking for another MMORPG.
I will give the game some credit....It renewed my love for MMORPGs. I see in this game "what could have been" so I will go look for the game "that has it".

Its a shame you did not get to play this game when it first came out. The numbers of people playing would have stunned you. Nearly every town was full for the first 1-2 months. The community was like a large wave carrying everyone with general enthusiasm. Some diligently worked at making successful businesses (some of which stayed active until NGE) while others sought the path of Jedi. Since the path of Jedi was a mystery, people had this drive for a common goal... to be the FIRST Jedi.
Others concentrated on bringing the War into the game. And I would have to say that is where it was first most apparent SOE had screwed the pooch. Initially we had Battlefields, then they were withdrawn. In the end years of work began retreating to what you now see: A BrainFart in action.
Too many excuses were given for SOE's decision but the bottom line is this: Many many people quit. What could have been, to me, is gone now. I wouldn't try SWG2. Or any other game from SOE again. Star Wars had represented what I thought was going to be a great game. Interest in MMORPGs went up and I have tried several, all of which I have been pleasently surprised with. So good luck in your journeys and hasta la vista SWG and SOE. I think SOE needs more content itself.
Sorry to hear the SWG experience was disapointing for you, but I am delighted to hear that new players are not taking to the game as $OE claim.
I agree with Obiwill that it is a shame you did not get the opportunity to experience the game before the NGE came in. I was part of a guild or over 90 members, and most of those had 2 or 3 accounts. As a result, we had a thriving metropolis, lots of guild events for the pve and also a good standing in the pvp ranks. We even organised a 2 hour pve event in which some CSR's assaulted our city with imperial forces, shuttleloads of stormtroopers, dark jedi knights and nova troopers dropping into the city.
In 2 years, there was never an occasion when I logged into the game that at least 5 other guildmates were online, and 10 - 30 people off my friend list.
Don't get me wrong, the game wasn't perfect, and tehre was a need for some balancing of combat, and a number of bugs with quests always seemed to rear there heads, but at least it was fun and more importantly, playable.
RIP SWG - you will be sorely missed
SWG really was a superb game around a 16 months ago, the community alone made it worth staying and i am sure many people will agree with me there. I also don't know who is to blame with the NGE, the SOE lovers blame Lucas but some people blame SOE. Personally, i think whoever is to blame had cash signs light up in their eyes when they saw how well blizzard was doing and thought the best way to attract new people, would be to let them become jedi at the start. I still find this hard to believe that Lucas would actually encourage this as it's just so unstar warsy. Funny really, considering they advertised it as giving users a more "authentic" star wars experience. Also, it's ironic how this pretty much screwed the game up totally, expecting to make more money from it but instead attract a very few amount of members but also lose just about all of their loyal fanbase who was there from the beginning.
I also just picked up the game, I played the first month after release in 03 and didnt like it (coming from anarchy online)
I really like the game so far. I was going to post a fresh perspective review after I get up a few levels..
until then, it was actually the NGE that attracted me so to say its not attracting new people is incorrect. In fact, I meet new people every day I log in (Bria)
ive said it before, a game is only as dead as its most populated server. they keep coming out with new content and have more in the works.

It sounds great, so great in fact, I pitty those who canceled - Some deluded SWG fanboi who pities me.
I don't like it when you say things. - A Vanguard fan who does too.

you misquoted me
I said a game is only as dead as its most populated server.
wether or not its good is strictly personal and has nothing to do with what spin a veteran wants to put on it.
I know theres nothing more you guys would like to see then the game shut down, and its as if you keep saying it thinking that it will effect the matter.
keep holding your breath, the game isnt going to be shut down for quite some time.. no matter how badly you want it to be.
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a robot foot stomping on a human face -- forever."
What you guys are describing happened in the past was the experience I was hoping for. I guess I got in a little too late... I can't really understand how anyone could like it too much now. It seems entirely too boring to me, but to each his own.
If you guys have any suggestions of any games to watch out for in the future, I would appreciate it. I have tried some demos of some games already out there and they are not really what I am looking for.
I meant good as in viable, my error for not making myself clearer. My statement otherwise remains the same, judging a game on its most populated server proves little, except in SWG case it means people are going there in order to play with others since all the other galaxies are dead.
That alone testifies to the sickly state of SWG, because if the game is doing well, ALL servers should have a full population.
I would guess that the only people who really enjoy the game now are 'new fans' of the movies, based on ep3, hardcore sw fans who would play any game with a SW badge on it and those who are bored waiting for consoles to produce a decent online experience.
With regards to the game shutting down, it might as well be called swg2 already as swg - in its original, popular and brilliant form is completely dead. I don't believe that the current game will evolve much further as low populations = low income = smaller dev teams and less content. its a self defeating cycle, less content = more boredom, more cancellations and then we go around and around until the plug is pulled.
