For ease of access and the complete lack of ads popping every 2 minutes to get you to buy shit on the cartel, pick Rift. You really can play it for free.

SWTOR isn't a bad game but the f2p model is outrageuos and intrusive to the point of lunacy, that's my own opinion. I wouldn't go near SWTOR unless you were going to sub.

It's been a while since I played Rift - but I do know I like SWTOR, because,

it's Star Wars and it has great story lines. But I do have to admit I am fed up with the combat system of having 20+ skills of which you need mainly 4 or so plus the occasional 10 which are easy to forget. The cash shop sucks imho, but I don't care since I sub.

In the end - both are f2p (even if you just want to call it free to test before you may want to sub), so download both and test.

SWTOR , in my humble opinion, has a much more dynamic storyline, is more engaging and just overall has an epic feel to it. If you plan on subbing, play SWTOR. The F2P model however, still just my humble opinion, is utterly unplayable due to the restrictions it places on you.

Rift, is a very good game and the Patron (sub) while worth it, is not neccessary to fully enjoy it. Good story, typical mechanics and just an overall solid game. I only stopped playing because Trion stopped growing the game and instead just concentrated on the typical expansion fare.

Definitely SWTOR for me as well, it's one of the rare few MMO's where the leveling experience is like playing a good single player RPG.

Every class has its own story, and even during the "generic" missions you get unique dialogues based on your class. If you've ever played any Bioware games in the past (like Mass Effect or Dragon Age) a lot of stuff will look familiar to you, like the companions/party members with their own stories, the alignment system where you get to make moral decisions during a mission ("Do I let the innocent civilians escape? Or do I blow their ship out of the sky?") and other cool stuff.

So if you want a great story experience with fun gameplay I'd highly recommend SWTOR.

That being said, RIFT is supposedly great for raiding and stuff. I can't comment much on it personally since I never made it past level 20, it was one of those games where the story failed to engage me and the graphics weren't to my liking either (more of an art style thing).

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

If I wanted to subscribe to the game I'd probably choose SWTOR. Nice leveling experience if subbed, crap if F2P. Play it for the stories and be done with it.

If I'd wanted F2P and/or longevity I'd go with Rift, given no other choices of course.

SWTOR of course that game is something I really loved. The stories the combat and I loved the companions and their remarks and conversations. For me Rift was very bland. Do the sub thing for SWTOR.

In all honesty, I would want to say SWTOR because Rift disappointed me and I'm a Star Wars fan, but sadly, SWTOR disappointed me too with its paywalling shenanigans.

I would go with SWTOR too especially after the new update.

Its genius how Bioware got everyone playing together and made even the old group content viable again.
