Thanx OP! I haven't played for quite a while and was thinking of starting back up again. In fact, I didn't even get a chance to start my first months subscription. This may have helped me and my decision!
What, are you new here? OP posts ESO is great, of course it will bring hordes to disagree and say why they don't think so, in fact the OP even asked for their opinions when he said, "what's not to like?"
Believe me, there are things not to like about this MMO depending on your taste in games.
Things to not like happen in each and every MMORPG I have ever played regardless if I liked or loved that game. So not sure why you state the obvious?
Then again you will not really see me in forum sections of games I dislike, because that's mostly just a waist of time. Because it ends up in a endless discussions with NO rights or wrongs.
i got a month subscription about 3 weeks ago and got excited about the next big update. Turned my main and second characters into vampires and loved every moment of it. After that first week i didnt feel any desire to log back in. I uninstalled the game after that first week. I cant find a reason to subscribe to this game. It is somewhat enjoyable, but i get more stuff to do in other non-sub games with the same IP. There goes 3 weeks wasted out of a month sub. I dont think im coming back to waste more money like that.
First of all - I do NOT like forced groups in order to move forward in a story or in an MMO.
It should be a choice and ESO is. You do not have to be in a group to do the main story but you do for Most RvR or high end game content. LIke every other MMO.
Second - the term - single player MMO - is stupid. a MMO is not a Multiplayer in a group mode for success only game. It provides you the opportunity to do so and to socialize with any number of other people - but please do not assume it means forced group to have fun and enjoy the game. I can enjoy the game, socialize and be solo if i choose but be limited in what I experience because there is much you cannot do alone.
MMO = Massively muliplayer online - which means lots of players online - providing the opportunity to work together. It does NOT mean forced groupings to do the main story. So get over it. I can play solo through the story and still socialize and be a part of the community in many ways.
So please dont try to force your perverted definition of a MMO on me if you dont like mine.
[mod edit]
No actually he's right. The definition of MMOs was never that you are forced to play in groups and that's that. MMOs offer a persistent world where a lot of players can interact simultaneously. That's pretty much it.
But there is one more thing. WoW gave people the option to solo and made that a viable option on top of grouping. What happened? WoW destroyed all the previous MMOs that came before it that FORCED people to group like EQ. In EQ you either grouped or you uninstalled. WoW changed that. And then became 10 times more popular than UO, EQ, Lineage, DAOC combined. EQ got it wrong. WoW got it right. That's why WoW is still the top dog after 10 years and EQ is probably going to be shut down in the next few years Because forced grouping is what MMOs are all about right?

It's a pretty good game for a theme park, but the phrase sand box really shouldn't be mentioned in the same thread as ESO.
It is of course not a sandbox, but the level of character customization is vast.
Yes - having everyone use cloth and resto/destro staff - pretty vast
(note this has probably changed - just talking about my guild at launch where all of us used 5 cloth armor and staff no matter what class)
But all kidding aside - yes I liked the freedom of skill choice a lot - I just wished that when I played it wasn't so skewed in favor of Magica - stamina builds were a complete joke

I joined a guild, playing with RL friends, there is group PvP , RvR and PvE ( raid style ).
It is hardly instanced, you see everyone running around in the world ...
People talk to eachother, etc.
So again, point me to the mmorpg that allows you to socialize more please, because I would love to see it.
Ehh? every themepark MMO comes with similar tools. ESO is not something special. Infact it is the best single player MMO on market right now. Socialising is something players chose to do and can not be inforced.
True, however, one example is that you have to get together with people for crafting and buying goods.
Another example is that you would want to group up for RvR. It is not forced, but it is natural behaviour.
I don't know why but I feel that I socialize more here somehow. Compared to games like SWTOR, WoW ( nowadays ), AoC, LOTRO, WAR.
It think it is a combination of the way crafting and RvR are implemented.

Seriously, you played 5 hrs.. this makes you qualified how? Would you perform surgery with 5 hrs of instruction? No. Would you go work on a car with 5 hrs of technical school? No. You're in a honeymoon phase. Come back in 4 months... then say something.
Jesus....
Anymore people on this site "be like" "I booted the game.. and it worked ... 5 stars bro *******"
I socialize just fine in EVERY MMO. Just wait til you start getting quests where you and your party are in separate instances of the same quest.. when you see the floating arrow. Oh wait, you're still probably in n00bie area 1 or 2....
Did I say I played 5 hours? Hmm I guess I did, it was just one session, after all the previous 5+ hour sessions

Wow was hardly the first MMO with a viable soloplay, games like Lineage had that way before. The only difference is that in Lineage there were monsters that you had to run away from if you were alone at times but not being able to solo every monster in the open world is not really the same as forcing everyone to always group.
I do however think that soloing is just a part of why Wow became so huge, among others did Blizzard already had millions of fans and Wow had 5 times the budget of any other MMO when it released (EQ2 12M$, Wow 60M$) together with way better programmers.
Forcing you to always play a certain way is a mistake, but groupers need open world content just as anyone else. Putting all open world contest as soloplay and all dungeons as group content makes a rather boring game.
Thing is, so far I haven't seen any legit complaints, but if you don't like it, you don't like it.

For one thing do ESO use way too much phasing which makes playing with your friends annoying. Most dungeons are rather uninspired and looks the same as the rest of them. The VR gameplay feels a bit like something they added very late and could still use a lot more work, or they could skip VR levels and just let those levels be additional levels instead.
There are of course things ESO could have made way better. There are also things ESO makes good though, but the game still needs work and Zenimax themselves knows this, that is why they postponed the console release.
But what really matters is if you think it is fun and worth your time/money or not.

Legit complaints, interesting term, but I won't go there. This game is designed in a certain fashion, heavy on quest centric, single player, story driven game play. If you enjoy this style of game play, and it appears you do, then you found your perfect game.
Now my favorite MMORPG of all time is EVE, closely followed by DAOC, Shadowbane, Lineage 1 and 2 and most recently, ArcheAge.
Think about those titles and how they are designed, if I believe those are the best MMO's that I've ever played, do you think I might have some issues with how ESO plays out? (Congratulations, you just received the achievement for completing your 1000th quest, great job...uh yeah, right)

It might be a good idea in future to qualify requests for opinions about games, by only requesting positive opinions, of course the discourse might be a little one sided as a result of this, but at least it would upset fewer people, as seems to be the case here

There is a huge difference between offering an constructive opinion or just downright trolling and bashing.
Most of these People here are just trashing every single topic in this forum that has any shred of positivity in it and praising all other topics bashing the game.
All these people either never even played the game or haven't for months!

Yup forums are indeed for discussion. But as you clearly state it's absolute NOT your type of game so I am totally unsure why you even spend time in this forum section. I think it's one of the few times we seem to clash as most other times I see myself pretty much agreeing in replies to you, but that's when we are having discusions about sandbox games which is the MMORPG type I truly love but seem to have lost after SWG. And yeah SWG is a game never match for me personaly and EVE would have gotten me if it had (yeah call me silly) walking around with my character would be in EVE.
But I also had lost interest in themepark MMORPG till ESO came around and before ESO didn't think a Themepark could grab me again. Oh some did but never lasted longer then 1, 2 or 3 months sometimes even less
If I see someone enjoying a game I truly dislike I'm just am glad that gamer has found a game to enjoy. But never would I doubt someone's taste because of that. Because that person enjoying that game I might dislike might also like games I do like.
It can't be great, OP. Why? Because it's a themepark that has already been released. The only great games around here are sandboxes that are a year or two away... say, Black Dessert or The Repopulation.
Even Archeage can't be great any longer because they've moved beyond the exclusive $149 alpha and are now letting everyone in to the betas... hence all the "Archeage is awful" threads popping up.
As a matter of fact, you're best off keeping positive thoughts about ESO or any other post-release MMO to yourself around here. It's only cool to hate, or at the very least point out negatives and ignore positives.
So... ESO, Wildstar, FF14... they all suck... just like life

I love EVE, but EVE is special, better to leave that one out of the discussion right now
I loved SWG-pre-CU-NGE even more, but, well, that's also another discussion ;p
I loved DAoC RvR, realm pride, ... thing is, the megaserver system in ESO makes the game more resistant to population shifts. When ToA and NF hit DAoC, servers went empty and it never recovered, server merges came too late, and implemented in a way that it eventually completely removed realm pride.
So while at its prime, nothing could compare to DAoC, it's Achilles heel was population shifts. Perhaps if Mythic had handled it's development better, we would still be playing DAoC, who knows
I will agree with you that ESO is geared towards solo play while questing, but so are all the other "modern" mmo's. At least there is RvR and non instanced open world PvE dungeons.

In all honesty it is a shame that people have to troll ESO so bad. Most of the people who do troll also troll WS/WoW and every other mmo. So mmorpg is home to the troll network it would seem. ESO is not a bad game it has come a long way since launch, and No it did not have the worst launch ever. I remember other mmos (wow) for example where no one could log on for 3 days due to being DCed after a few moments and then getting the "your account is logged on" error. So if you do not like the mmo in question don't post. the world is better off without the idiocy of the internet in full bloom.

You guys know what's said? That reddit, yes REDDIT, has become a more mature place to have discussions about games than MMORPG. I have recently been reading the ESO and FFXIV forums there and it's just so much better. A lot less trollnig and negativity there. But seriously, this is getting sad when reddit becomes a more civilised place for discussions.

Socializing was never an issue for me in ESO. The guild I belonged to was massive, and always talking and having fun. What turned our guild away from ESO was how it seemed like Zenimax deliberately was trying to stop us from interacting with eachother in the game. It was a waste of time doing multiple dungeon runs since they nerfed the xp. You could help a friend with certain quests cause you would get zoned out. ESO is definitely my biggest disappointment of the year, and I even bought the alpha bundle of AA so that's saying a lot.

Think about those titles and how they are designed, if I believe those are the best MMO's that I've ever played, do you think I might have some issues with how ESO plays out? (Congratulations, you just received the achievement for completing your 1000th quest, great job...uh yeah, right)
Like I said, great theme park game if you are into those sorts of things, me, not so much these days.

It's been what? 4 months? And People still bitching and moaning here and trolling every single topic that has a shred of positivity in it.
Move on already and get on with your lives! It's getting beyond pathetic now.

They don't have anything else to do, Wildstar was not the saviour of online gaming, so they are back on here to whinge.
