I'm not sure what is classified as this generations time frame, but I would pick Morrowind as the best.  It's an open ended rpg and the world/environment feel very foreign, like an alien planet. Tons of lore and things to do,  coupled with the mod community makes it one of my favorites.
Any game that forces me in a linear path like the Mass Effect sequel does, is not the best rpg to me.

Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.

I vote Skyrim the best. Still on my table and in use. User mods add numerous different possibilities. Mass Effect series was hard to start because of the interface. I tried to start many times and gave up. But when the story took me I couldn't end. I hope the story continues. Too good story to kill the hero. Dragon Age was interesting, too. And I liked also the AOC start city, especially music. If you talk about role playing games, don't forget simulators. MS Flight simulator has longest history in my life. But of course it is too boring to most. Like the real life.

Skyrim's the best because it's the most flexible.  Something for everyone.  I liked the entire ME series, as well as Dragon Age 1 & 2, after that it got repetitive.  Bloodlines I still play a lot especially since I've found a few great mods that upgraded the graphics and added a few new quests.  Some RPG's I prefer not to play but enjoyed watching the entire walkthrough on youtube, like The Last Of Us.

Mass Effect 2 is without a doubt the best RPG of its generation. Not even Skyrim can distantly compete in storytelling, depth, voice acting, scope, pure aesthetic beauty... it only competes in getting randomly lost through the map doing unimportant missions that end up overwhelming and boring the player.

Thank you BioWare for being still, so many years later, the kings of RPG. I wish you hadn't sold your soul to EA, because they will be your demise.

My opinion is my own. I respect all other opinions and views equally, but keep in mind that my opinion will always be the best for me. That's why it's my opinion.
