Hacked! WoW and Archeage.

BiohunterBiohunter Member UncommonPosts: 97

Now, I haven't played World of Warcraft in about two years.  Friday Night though, I got an email from a friend who still plays telling me she thinks my account was hacked. So, I check battle.net and sure enough my characters are all nekid (gear all sold off) and 2 characters have been transferred with 2 more in Q.  So I have Blizzard call me via support request. Took about 5 mins for the call back and Justin (Bliz rep) had my account restored in about 15 more minutes. and He was kind enough to let me log in for the day to sort everything out. ( get everything out of the mail ect)

So today, I get an email from Trion saying that a "Gift" Founders pack purchase for Archeage could not be completed. Twice! So I login to my Trion account and thank goodness my credit card on file expired in 2012. I tried to contact Trion but since I haven't made any recent purchases I wasnt eligible for live chat. (which I think is pretty bogus) So Ill await the email reply.

The odd thing (to me at least) is I just downloaded and installed Archeage this past Thursday.  Two days later my WoW account is compromised, and then My Trion account?

Now, before you say, well maybe you have a virus?!?! Im an IT Systems administrator. Now does that mean Im "too great" to have a virus, no not at all. The fact is You cant have a cure till you have a disease.

And for the record, I did my due diligence. I ran Super Anti Spyware, Malwarebytes, Housecall, ad-aware and Avast. Also ran a boot time scan of avast.  You know what they turned up? 35 Tracking cookies.  Thats it.

My guess is the archage/glyph application has some vulnerability. Anyone else have a similar issue?

Hmm, sounds like perhaps you are using the same email address for multiple sites and perhaps the same passwords, else how could hacking the ArcheAge site end up with them getting your WOW info?

Wow and Trion are two different email accounts. Yahoo and Gmail. Neither one shows anyone logging in from other locations.  As for other accounts, they are all spread out.

    Also using totally different passwords.

Maybe blizzard and trion are in cahoots to steal peoples loot. They're probably doing cross game gear exchanges!!111

I noticed a raft of new complaints of accounts hacked on the Rift tech forums. This is all very recent. Almost all are seeing the same thing as OP, attempts to "gift" the $150 AA founder's pack and many folks are unable to contact Trion since they don't have access to live support or a phone number.

Imo, Trion could take a lesson from Blizz about how to work customer service.

regardless the source of the virus. Blizzard has the by far the best MMO Custumer Service. XD just want to point that out. Prob because Blizzard has the money and resource, but, still they provide top service. Once, they restored my hacked account before i found out on myself. that was a first

Then again, maybe the emails about the Trion transaction failing were bogus and trying to get you to click on some link.

If thats the case, the Beta release of Archeage co-insides with the complaint time frames.

Even if AA had some sort of vulnerability, which I doubt, how would that affect your WoW account unless you were using the same email/password for both.

If you were using the same for both, which is a really bad idea, then were else have you used it. For example, a lot of online forums have lousy security and can be easily hacked into.

  • PepeqPepeq Member UncommonPosts: 1,977
Of course the best part in all of this is that they had to pay a subscription fee to hack your account (WoW)... sad part is Blizzard takes back the free month of game time.

I can see your point there, I should clarify. I may not have played WoW however, I have played Hearthstone. Since they use the same client and password.......

Its possible a key logger or some other kind of attack associated could be the culprit. Something new where its not on an anti virus blacklist yet.

    It is absolutely possible.

Do you use an authenticator with Trion?

I too received the email with details on how my Archeum founders pack purchase could not be completed. I did not attempt this purchase since I already own 2 copies of the bronze pack. The transaction couldn't be done because my  CC payment was late, but I hate to think it would have gone through otherwise.

I did call my CC company and they couldn't see an attempted transaction on my account, so I'm wondering if it's a phishing scam?

I changed my account pw on Glyph and tried to add an authenticator as well with no success on that.(I haven't been in the AA Beta so I think I'll need that first for the authenticator).

I also submitted a ticket to Trion with details, but no GM reply has come yet.

I hope our personal info is still safe at Trion.../fingerscrossed...

most likely a trojan, spyware, or a key logger. If he contacts Blizzard they can tell him where the account was hacked from. I bet it is China . People from China have tried to hack my WoW account 4 times in the past nine years.

Nope, when I stopped playing Rift, I dont think they had that out yet. I could be wrong on that though lol.

Did you use the same password for WoW as for Archeage?  And did you use your password to either of those games somewhere else?

If you use a password in WoW and use the same password in some game forum, the forum may not protect your password very well.  The forum gets hacked, then the hackers say, let's try the password in WoW and see if it works.

Nope, Totally different passwords.  I don't have a huge online/game/forum presence (im on here and maybe a handful of other sites.) so I don't think thats it. But, I suppose anything is possible.

I hear ya, and I know its possible. Its just the timing from when I installed the Beta client and the other coincidence. Other users in the past few weeks with the same issue.

I was unable to change my password or add the authenticator as well.  However from the same site I was able to see my expired credit card and delete it. (Did NOT add another method of payment) .

The email I received looks totally legit. Headers all trace back to Trion. (in Dallas)

  • reeereeereeereee Member UncommonPosts: 1,636

Phishing certainly sounds like the best explanation to me.

I see it going like this:

WoW accounts get hacked all the time because they're so profitable and you just happened to get a clever AA based phishing attempt at the same time.  But since a few million other people got that phishing attempt and a significant number thought it was real Trions customer support is flooded right now and can't get back to you quickly.

  • JemcrystalJemcrystal Member UncommonPosts: 1,989

    1) Never follow an email link no matter how legit it looks.

    2) Stop accusing hacked people of sharing passwords with others or using the same password.  Esp after they told you repeatedly they did not.  It's a form of trolling.  Show some respect to fellow humans; don't imply they are incompetent.

    3) Most times you have to pay extra for the service of an authenticator app so I disapprove of them.

    4) It is wise to make up a very long password using all the * * * * * you are permitted.

    5) Update.

    6) Alert everyone when there is a true compromise, esp the company.  Hope the game corp listens and quickly responds to counter the threat.

There have been hundreds of "why play WoW" threads and good customer relations in mmo's is rare so 10 points to Gryffindor, I mean Blizzard.  Good luck OP and others.  Hope it works out.

  • sosoflyingsosoflying Member UncommonPosts: 4
I totally suspect AA and Glyph may have vulnerability, I think there is hacker who can scan for accounts.  And there are definitely bots exits for AA.   The game can be dll injected or packet injected.

IMO SOE is the best and i have dealt with MANY different game companies.

Blizzard did respond the NEXT day to my hacked account but that account was literally hacked as soon as i logged off and the SAME day i started to play,so something was VERY fishy there.I would say Blizzard  is ok by all other standards but not nearly good enough.SOE responded within minutes and a GM even entered the game and again later to ask me if everything was ok,you just don't see that in ANY game.

SOE is also pretty good for not getting hacked but Blizzard it is almost an epidemic at how many have been hacked.

Trion...Well idk never had to deal with their support staff nor did i play long enough to see how they clean up problems.

I was VERY disappointed with Square Enix although if you are willing to call by phone ,wait on standby for 30-45 minutes, you will actually get an English speaking support person that does care and will help you.ALL other means are through outside agencies that don't even know the game,so might as well talk to a wall.

That is the problem with FREE to play and a LOT of developers, their support staff is handled by outside operations that know almost nothing of your game.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

I do not have issues with this. I DONT open SPAM in my email accounts. I also use a very good anti virus. It has a game mode set in it. So while you play games, its still active and allows you to play them. For browsing I use Priv Dog. Which blocks much of the hacking attempts through your browser. To help you secure your computer for free you can download what I use here.

    http://www.comodo.com/products/free-products.php?track=2721&key5sk1=06e12e0a9cba9814aa45b4784744395080302e35

As to Priv Dog, Once you install Comodo, you will get a free version of it as well. Hope that helps against future incursions.

As a gamer, Comodo is by far the best free AV you can get for your PC.

Also, as to passwords. I am sure it has been said before. Use at least one capitalized letter. A mix of letters and numbers of no less than 8 characters.
