I saw this headline earlier.   I was under the impression that YouTube was looking to buy them.  This is very interesting.  I have to read more about this.  I know that Amazon is huge in the storage department, but this is just crazy.

Edit : Actually, this makes total sense (source: wired.com).

"As random as the Twitch buy may sound to the uninitiated, it makes at least as much sense—and probably a lot more—than Amazon building and selling its own phone. Apple and Google have already won the battle for the small screen. The same can be said for tablets, with the exception of the Kindle for e-reading. But the screen that gamers use—the original TV—is still contested territory. The battle for the living room is very much up for grabs. And that’s where Twitch comes in."

This falls directly in-line with HBO's recent additions to the Amazon Prime On Demand Library.  HBO has been very careful in not upsetting the cable companies in any open discussion about offering its service outside of cable (a la HBO GO for  a monthly fee minus the cable part).  Maybe this acquisition is the beginning of additional streaming media selections like all of HBO and other cable services?  I really hope so.

Edit edit:  Not to mention the possibility of giving top streamers their own Amazon Market Place to buy official merchandise of that streamer.  This could be huge.

Twitch is really useful, happy to see more and more people share videos over there. It was an amazing new that Amazon spend 1 billion to buy it. Good for them.
