Classic or Normal Server?

Hey guys, im thinking of getting this game but don't know whether to play on classic or normal servers. I have heard that there are more people looking for groups at lower levels on the classic server/ Also, how much content would i be missing if i joined the classic server? i like to pve a lot and quests, so will there be a lot less content?

-thx in advance

It's best to go for classic servers. The only content you'll be missing from the normal servers is the Trials of Atlantis content, which is for high end characters anyway.

does that mean that if i buy the epic edition and play on a classic server, i will get the catacombs/shrouded isles/darkness rising content too? just not the toa?

With the Epic Edition you get everything that has been released to date. Since you're starting out fresh the Classic servers would indeed prolly be best. Since there is no /level on the Classic servers there are indeed a lot more people in the low level areas to group with and such. And if you start on the Classic server and get a character to 50 there you can then try out one of the regular servers and use the /level command to start at 20. Then you can experience all the content from the ToA expansion as well without having to go through the first 20 levels all over again. Best of both worlds. :)

ToA is alot of fun. I never saw it as a problem. I really enjoy successful master level raids, and the questing is way better than classic quests. And after you finish ToA quests and master levels, you can use those abilities in Darkness Rising and Catacombs. Makes the game alot more fun to me.

I'd agree with at least starting classic, simply because you will find groups far more easily and the newbie areas will be teeming with life. You will learn about the game quicker on a classic server. Once you have a good handle on the game you can try an old server with ToA and see what you think. Having already got used to the game on a classic server your gained experience will allow you to level fast even if you have to solo to 20/30 on a ToA server. ToA is a love hate thing. Most probably fall into the latter category but many love it. A ToA server isn't really the best way to start though as the newbie/lowbie areas are comparatively deserted compared to the classic servers.

I would actually say given how many "newish" players I have seen on the regular servers that you give those server a chance. If you are an extremely casual player that wants to solo all the time, then you might find it too difficult, but most people will be able to find low level groups on the regular servers.

Yeah, a lot of people seem to be trying out the game as of late, and not all are going Classic so there are definitely some low level characters on the regular servers to group with. Also keep in mind the Catacombs classes can't /level so they're always there at the low levels.

I've actually been hearing this from a quite a few players recently, that the traditional servers are picking up again somewhat. If so it's good news for all of us. I have a fair few thirty something Albion and Midgard characters, on the old clusters, that I haven't played for ages simply because when I returned to DAoC to play classic I logged them for a few weeks but could never find a group so I gave up. Maybe it's a good time to dust them off again, especially with the changes to ToA recently making things more casual player friendly.

I am new to the game, been playing only a few weeks now,and I've created characters on both the Classic server(Gareth) and Normal servers(Merlin,Lancelot).
There are more people on the Classic server in the low level areas, but the newbie Guild there reminded me a lot of WoW general chat, very annoying and immature for the most part.I stay in it because it makes grouping easier, but every time I log in I am tempted to quit.

My experience on the Normal servers have been just the opposite, while not as many people in the low level areas(but still quite a few)the quality of the chat in the starter Guild and the groups I have been in have for me been much better overall. And I have been invited to group every time I log in even with my level 10 Champion or level 13 Thane.

And I have received a ton more help on the Normal servers both in questions answered(even when they were totally newb questions)and with higher level people giving me Gold and items that I never would be able to get on my own this early in my adventuring career.
I couldn't believe how friendly the people are on both the normal servers as well,I'd have to say it's been the best to start as a new player of any recent games I've played(WoW,EQ2,GW's).

So far at the lower levels anyway my experience has been more enjoyable on the Normal servers.

The trouble is the vast majority of the immaturity on display in the newbie guild is a result of teenagers playing the free trial. They don't stay in the game as they are simply playing for free and soon move on to the next free trial or open beta, so its not indicative of the real server community. Personally I've never found it anywhere near as bad as WoW.

Also any seasoned players hanging in the newbie guild to help genuine newbies out will usually stamp fairly hard on anyone who is overstepping the mark. I've seen a lot of apologies being made after a good slapping down. If it really bugs someone they can quit the starter guild. Most paying, serious players will be looking for a good guild anyway. I've been playing MMOs for so long it's water off a duck's back to me these days. The only time I stamp hard on anyone is for displaying racial, sexist, religious or xenophobic bigotry towards other players. The older server clusters don't suffer anywhere near as much because the free trial kiddies aren't usually going to roll a character there.

I do not think the issues with the starter guilds has a lot to do with teenagers. I had no intention of playing the Classic servers, but when they were launched there was no one on my server so I made toons and those and played there for a couple of weeks. There were not a lot of mew people on there. Almost all of the players were either current players or those who had reactivated their accounts recently. The starter guilds were horrible. Hib on Gareth was the only one that wasn't bad, but it certainly was not great either.

So hands down in my experience the regular servers have been great. What was described is typical. Now that MLF has joined my cluster we seem to have a whole server of helpful Boy Scouts playing. It is great. Nothing like having someone park his bot in DF, buff up people coming in, following you and setting up a PF for your animist, and then go back to standing around because he is on his main in ToA farming scrolls.

The "only" content you'll be missing???? That's tons of content. I love going over to ToA. It's awesome over there. And I like going on the raids over there too. The dungeons are sweet.

Aye, I fully second that, ToA is awesome to explore. It's def. the best pve region in my book in Daoc.

Yeah, I agree, there is some great content in ToA and due to recent changes it is a LOT more casual player friendly, I'd definitely check it out at some point. :)

I think people should check out the normal servers. While ToA has not been nerfed enough to be perfect it is so much better than before. New players might not even understand the complaints people have, at least until they have gone through it a lot of times with all of their level 50's.

Anyway, why I do not like ToA - I do not like Raids. The occasional Epic dungeon or dragon is fun, but an expansion based on raids was and is a mistake. What is my nightshade going to do on a ML raid? /stick and wait for it to be over. In fact that is what most people playing most classes can get away with. To me it is a long pointless time sink. I wish they would add in additional viable ways to earn ML that have nothing to do with raids. Putting aside my boredom of raids, there is the whole issue of time. I need to dedicate X hours on Y day to going on Z raid. I just like to live my life and play the game when I can and for the most part not plan my life around a game. So that is why I hate raids. Which in turn means that I feel that ToA was the worst expansion for DAOC and I hope nothing like it is ever done again.

Now, with that said and scaring people off, it is so much better than it used to be. The most important aspect of ToA was the artifacts and those are much easier to get and level. Because of that ToA is far more casucal friendly. So do not be afraid to check it out. The artwork and zones look amazing!

But for me, Catacombs so far is the best expansion. If you could cross Catacombs with DR then I think you would have a great expansion.
