Runescape: Tens of Millions of Dormant Account Names Made Available

Sixty-six million account names have been gathering dust for god-knows-how-long, but at finally, Runescape is making them available again. Twenty percent of these names will be ready for use this week; for the first 24 hours after the release, players wanting to change their names will have fulfill a 1000 level minimum requirement, thus giving priority to dedicated Runescape players.

    all those acct names and people had to add numbers, x's etc to their names because the one they originally wanted was taken? can people not think of original acct names themselves and have to hope they get their name in first before anyone else?

    i look this wrecked because i've got GIST.

    They really should just allow character names to be whatever and just use the account itself as the primary record for the character.  

     

    Account names need to be unique, character names do not.  We accept that there are millions of Joe's in the world but there can only be one in the game?  Unique names should be due to cleverness not due to creating it first on the server.

     

    This should be true for all games.  So what if there are 200 Kenny's on your server... gives you all the more incentive to make it stand out in terms of gear, appearance, achievements, titles, or whatnot.

    Well, everyone knows that XxXLegolas is way cooler than XxLegolas image

     

    but yeah, either people are really determined to have a certain name, or their just not capable of creative thinking image

    Phew! I was afraid they got my name Kingbiscuit, but happy to see they only purged Kingbiscoti and Kingbiskit thankfully....bullet dodge.

    Still leaves 170 million names created meaning only the numbered names most likely deleted making room for ...ummm more numbered names lol.

    Agree more then full with you, this should be in any game. And allow multi word names, etc.

    PREACH BROTHER!!! I mean what kind of name is Faklawl12985239486284906824, its cruel to name your character similar to that, with NUMBERS! It totally ruins the immersion. REMEMBER DON'T FORGET CAPITAL LETTERS! It's very important if you want to feel important or even recognized.

    I went back and found out my name was gone and it took about 30 minutes(addiding website errors) to pick a new name. Even the random names it suggested were unavailable.

    If there are 66 million dormant names, and how many active names are there? There must be over 100 million unique names then. At that point it's not about being creative. How many names can there possibly be? Do you really expect someone to try 500 names before they just give up and start adding XXXXXXX?
