when i pledged, i read what the kickstarter said, and my brain told me that was for a much smaller product then we are now seeing. When CR started to change the vision into this larger mmostyle PU my brain told me that this will not be ready before then end of 2017 early 2018.
Im still gonna keep backing cause to me 2018 is not that far away, time flies when your having fun, and I'm always having fun!1
Now I know where all the backers money has gone for this game. To make cinematic trailers like this. I wonder how much time and money was wasted making this.?
People should have learnt a long time ago that release dates are never set in stone..
They have had a shit ton of extra cash that they never expected to get so they can now make an even better game.. I for one am happy to wait until its finished, i have access to the arena commander thing as well so its all good.
Originally posted by Scalpless CryTek's engines look great. I suppose one could enjoy Star Citizen for hype and Elite Dangerous for actual gameplay.
But Elite also looks amazing beta runs and looks amazing
Yep, Elite looks great. It just doesn't have the huge-budget appeal SC's videos have.

The thing is, you can't always pour more money on a game to make it better. SC's scope is so enormous it's almost sure to be screwed up in one way or another. We'll just have to wait and hope it's still a good game despite its flaws.

it is a very ambitious project. if it were up to a publisher, yes it would likely get borked in some fashion because the only testers they have are the internal staff which is hundreds of people.
once a game makes it to beta so players can test it, it is too late to change anything major as it is in the crunch phase of development.
Arena Commander has the appearance of being a game, but in reality is a testing module in the pre-alpha phase of development with hundreds of thousands of players to stress it to the breaking point. this way Cloud Imperium can fix it without having to trash years of work.
Cloud Imperium even coined a new term called " the wild" to indicate the hundreds of thousands of testers at their disposal.
Buy those SHIPS! Because CIG is burning through the money like nobodies business. Talked recently to a friend who is working on a major game project, and his rough estimate for game design expense went like this: For every ten employees, figure about $100,000 a month in expenditure. So, check out the number of employees, and start multiplying. Doesn't include engine expense, and various other software/hardware buy ins, etc.
Now, some of the production on Star Citizen is being outsourced, which might lower the costs there, but brings with it it's own set of problems and risks.
Unfortunately, Chris Roberts has a history of biting off more than he can chew. Ambitious plans that don't work out quite right. Delays. Poor management decisions. That just ups the need for more money to buffer these issues too. So, go buy more SHIPS, right now. And plan on continuing for the years it will take to get this out.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

Can you please provide some examples confirming your statement?
I played all his games from Times of Lore to Freelancer. Tell us, which one suffered from the above mentioned.
Freelancer was delayed and shipped without many of the features ha had envisioned but this was not his fault. It was Microsoft's doing. It's the main reason Roberts decided to never work under the roof a big publisher again. Still it was an excellent game supported by the community as far as ten years after it's release.

Microsoft had nothing to do with the promises made and the initial 18 month overrun or the fact that all of DA's budget for FL was practically gone, that was entirely down to management prior to the takeover.
Good business decisions are weighed on knowing what to include and what to exclude. Roberts is a dreamer, which in many ways is a good thing, but not when he is also in charge of finances.
From what I've read from the earliest videos and interviews these are not CGI videos they are using the in-game engine for all this, maybe at a higher level of detail then the shipping product but the game engine none the less.
This game is heading into uncharted territory along several fronts. It is aiming to be the very first crowd funded game to appeal to a mass audience. I'd say their marketing machine has been doing a good job at that! They have international support and will continue to raise a lot of money, right now they've been raising 1mil a month! Wow!
By not having a publisher backing their product the only overt pressure they have in regards to the game release is the press and their avid fans (me among them). So, since they have no one pulling on their strings telling them to get their product pushed out at a certain time, I think you can expect that the game may be cooking a bit longer than we've grown accustomed too. That is why I like their modulated release thus far. It generates some appeasement and allows you access to a view of the potential world.
Growing up with Wing Commander, Starlancer and Freelancer, I believe in Chris Roberts vision. The man can create great games and I think this will prove to be his magna opus. I think they are going to continue to raise funds that will boggle the mind. Do I expect this game to be 100 percent completed by the end next year, No. But I imagine that we will continue to see a gradual roll out of the game and see a finished product within a few years and that we will see continued growing years after that.

This, exactly. And while Roberts will claim he left Microsoft after the buyout, the truth is closer to Microsoft booting his ass when they found out the condition of the game and the companies' finances. Strike Commander was another bit of poorly managed game development from his time at Origins. Over a million man hours wasted on the project, and years late.
Go look at his Hollywood movie producer career as well. Poor to mediocre films throughout. And that was in the profession he really wanted. I doubt it's a coincidence that his newfound love of gaming came at the same time his Hollywood career cratered.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
...can't wait to see RSI selling assault rifles and planetary vehicles.
And I bet people will do stuff another 30M through their throuts, people never learn and there is never enough sport cars and summer houses a man could get.
Originally posted by Gatlan Almost seems like too much. I'd settle for a really good space simulator, of course, I'm not a backer even though I was a big fan of the genre back in the day. So now its not just ships but human avatars, ground vehicles, planets to explore and ground combat. Color me even more sceptical. It would be nice to see but I won't believe it until then.
Well I mean they have like a 50 million dollar budget.
Originally posted by Reklaw Maybe I havn't followed the game that close, but is it going to have playable avatars that indeed can land on planets and explore? If so it would be a great step within Space oriented games. Trailers where nice. But I am waiting to get hyped till there is atleast some true gameplay and not some closed small demo.
That would be the EXPECTED tip of the ice berg yet we can't get devs to accomplish even this,so i expect not.
SCI-Fi/space games are the absolute toughest to pull off with quality because it is like making 2-3 games in one and i am still waiting to see that ONE great game,so expect what you will from this developer, most likely a AA game marketing as a AAA game.
IMO this guy is laughing all the way to the bank because aside from Eve this market had yet to be realized so he is cashing in on an extremely easy open market.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

There's no chance in hell they'll have the game ready by then.
If they do release it then, it's going to have a gazilion features missing or half-implemented and shallow mechanics.
..Cake..

Someone on RSI has been watching Startopia Intro.
Or Space odyssey 2001...

You know what's embarrassing, people who don't recognize that both are a nod to Kubrick's Space Odyssey.
I mean hey, perhaps you noticed the music and scenery
Yeah, was just going to point this out.
the book was better....
