What is good about modern mmo's?

I have found myself writing a lot of negative posts due to my dissatisfaction with some recent releases, so I thought I would try my hand at a positive post.  So the question is, what is good about modern mmo's?

Here is my list...

  • The rise of FPS/ TPS combat.  Although the games that feature it aren't perfect we have seen it in the likes of PS2, Defiance and Firefall, and I sure hope this trend continues.
  • Dynamic events.  Again I do not think that they have achieved their true potential yet, but they can only improve.
  • Dungeon Finders.  There are many reasons why I dislike dungeon finders (loss of a populated world and the rise of hub towns mainly) but there is no doubt they save a lot of wasted time.
  • Those few unique games that have found their way through the derivative tide, and the most innovative that springs to mind is a child's game, namely Pirate 101.
  • Story.  This is often more suited to single player games and can result in a more solocentric mmo, but there is no doubt I enjoyed playing through the stories in SWTOR a great deal.
They are mine, share your own.

Dynamic events, more costume/cosmetic options,  graphics and that thing in GW2 where they auto-deposit your crafting mats in the bank.

Group finders...I like in principle but I think they should restrict them at least to your server even if it takes longer to find people. Total unaccountability for behavior leads to bad things online.

    Definitely a good idea, PioneerStew.

    1) Story, I'm definitely there with you on the story. The last couple of years have seen the rise of many story driven MMO's, of all different flavors and colors, ranging from SWTOR to TSW, and from TESO to Defiance and Firefall. I've always loved books and movies, and of course single player RPGs. For me the stories do a good job at getting me immersed in the world. All of these being voice acted is also a nice thing that used to be limited to single player games, but that has fully made its way into the MMO landscape now too.

    2) The Groupfinder. Absolutely one of my favorite MMO additions as well. No need to stand there spamming for hours feeling bored as hell, you can just go about your business until it pops.

    3) Character customization, and mainly appearance wise. Most MMOs seem to have caught on that people like to have their own unique looks. So we're being provided with a large amount of options and moddable/transmog outfits. No more classes with a set race, appearance and gender.

    4) Dynamic events are great as well, I've always loved these on GW2 and a couple of other games that have them, like FFXIV.

    5) No more pointless downtime. Remember the old days where you had to sit down to regen health and mana for a minute or so after every battle? Thank you for getting rid of that one for us, WoW.

Oh yeah, shared bankspace in general is one of the good ones for me too!

Story, cinematics, voice overs. Sadly that doesn't make for good gameplay.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

You need to quit gaming ^^ :)

    Re positives:

GW1 @ 2 removal of endless gear power ups + shared resource nodes + rewards for rezzing peeps, no trinity (latter had positives and minus - but above all it's different)

As above, group finders is a good thing when in the right kind of game (elitist power gear based/speed run in place of skills has obvious issues)

    wildstar - great housing.

Procedural generation of content I.e elite dangerous looks very exciting.

Story telling in WOW (main questlines). Still best in genre IMO.

    rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D

I completely overlooked this, but visual customisation and cosmetic items are a lot better these days, and fairly important to me in mmo's.

I'm surprised you didn't give that award to GW2. I always liked the main stories there far more than I did on WoW.

ESO also did an amazing job at it (to stick to the fantasy genre).

I can only think of one really

given that things like a near zero cost for distribution and advertising, the lower cost of license for tools, better metrics on game usage via Steam, YouTube Lets Plays and crowd funding indie developers have been given a lot more exposure and as a result the larger firms are starting to pay attention.

A good example of this is ArcheAge in which nearly all the new features of this game have been borrowed from games like Darkfall.

Another example is that the success of MineCraft is proof positive that people do like to build, so maybe the larger companies can follow suit with better graphics.

    1) Most are very pretty (enjoyable to look at). Graphics have come a long way since 2000 :)

    2) If a player enjoys almost total freedom, a good of number of MMOs accommodate this.

    - Al

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

    - Better games

    - Little down-time

    - Not dependent on others for fun (solo-able)

    - Instances, LFD/LFR ... more convenient and game-like

    Terrible example my friend.

How can Archeage, a game which has been in development since 2006 "steal" ideas from a game that wasn't even released in Korea (Darkfall) until 2013? In Korea, Archeage released prior to Darkfall......

What I like most is the today's ability to actively dodge in fights. I also like events. Quests are fine to tell stories, but random events make a world more alive.

Unlike the OP I don't like dungeon finders at all. It killed talking in groups completely.

It's funny that even though this thread is explicitly about positive comments, several posters hast can't help posting negative pointless comments - is it a sign of mental disorder? Serious question.

    Glad you noticed.

On topic, here are some of the things I found good about modern MMOs:

    • More moment to moment gameplay
    • More action gameplay
    • Less LFG and standing around
    • Diversity in art style
    • Breaking out of the fantasy-themed, level-based, gear-chasing rutt it had been in from about 2004-2009
    • The resurgence of housing and player-owned structures

I think there are more of them in general, it gives us more choices to find games we really like.  I guess there is some irony as I continue to play Guild Wars 1 and 2.

    Graphic and new payment systems.

Other than that they re-use old system from older games with better combination.

The only things that to me are better are the availability of better servers with more people and digital downloads of clients. Social systems are better being able to have friends and guilds and mailing lists all shown and whos online and whos not.

Destructible/constructible worlds as in Trove and Landmark. Voxels are finally making literal sandbox MMORPGs possible.
