LF player skill dependent MMOs

OuthiOuthi Member Posts: 5

Recommend me an MMO that has more strategy and knowledge to it than gear and lots of grinding, as in the player needs more of the former than the latter. Reflexes can be a part of it too. Also game balance needs to be present (if it's possible).

The game I've heard about that does this (but did not try it myself) is Guild Wars. The first. I don't know about the second.

Any setting is accepted, I'm looking for something challenging. This may be vague, but these are the most important things I'm looking for.

If you mean PvP strategy/knowledge, Achaea fits the bill imo. You really need to know your class skills (and your opponents) like the back of your hand to be highly competitive. You can be a level 100 Monk and get your face wrecked by a level 40 Serpent who knows what they're doing. Knowledge of afflictions, cures and overall mechanics are much more important then character level and gear.

I recommend joining either the Ashura, Sentinels or Maldaathi guilds, they're all heavy PvP guilds with helpful players and you can auto-join guilds as a newbie character.

EVE Online is the first one that comes to mind for me.

You can be competitively PVP ready within a few days, but it will take you much longer to actually get to grips with the game. Can be quite daunting at first and there is a lot to learn, but there is a lot of help around if you need it.

    Muchly recommended.

EVE doesn't require player skill, it requires time to get the biggest and best.  Lots of time.  Darkfall Unholy Wars is what you're looking for, OP.  Check out the official forums and see if it's for you.

When I am looking for a skill based game I end up in an FPS multi-player.  MMO's are just too gear/ stat orientated to allow fair pvp.

Check out the upcoming space sims. Elite: Dangerous is looking to be very skill based. Gear will help for sure, but flying your craft and engaging in combat at the right time, along with being forced to make decisions about how to outfit your ship etc... I am excited for it. The future of the game will also include FPS/ability to roam planets. Can't wait.

No matter what game is mentioned, there will be people who say it isn't player skill that counts.  Of the games I've played, DF seems to require some skill in order to be competitive.  At least that was my impression when I played it.

Based on what you said  in the OP I would recommend Guild Wars 2 or even Planetside 2 if you can handle FPS games.  Both games are more based on skill than gear and both will give you a lot of bang for the buck.  Possibly more so with Planetside 2, but again that is if you like FPS's.

I've noticed some strong Cowboy Bebop / Blade Runner influences, if you know what I mean image

Of course, both of these works have strongly influenced me, and I have also influenced the game.  Such is the nature of a long-running MMORPG with sandbox properties.
