Just to point out, if you want to call black is white we can do that. The layoffs are just "standard practice", okay. SWtoR, Tera, Secret World, Aion, Conan, DCUO, Defiance,LotRo, and others. Those are your "standard" among mmos released in recent years.. Notice something? If people want to claim Teso is just doing what other mmos have done then the future is clear.
I'd like to know where those people that got laid off went. Did bethesda pick them up to work on their next project or were they totally let go from the company ?
Love how WoW is always brought up. But saying that, with Blizzard they didn't layoff after the bugs were worked out. Might I add WoW had a heck of a lot of bugs and cheats when they first went live. But after all was worked out people were moved to different jobs. Blizzard is a big company and work on a lot of different things. IMHO.
Teso news sounds great to me, game has been running smooth and just the regular MMO issues. Yes even WoW has probs to this day. The people getting laid off won't be out of work too long and heck the hours they put in I think they may want a little rest before hitting the code again. Again IMHO.
Shit canning a bunch of people isn't standard practice. If that was the case they would have contracted them out for a certain amount of time and not had to release a statement to spin the reason for mass layoffs.
They're scaling back because the game isn't as successful 6 months later as they anticipated and they have to stay profitable. We all know the execs who made the decisions about pricing and business model aren't going to take the hit so the staffers who were intended to be there if things went well, have to pay the consequences.

"As far as the forum code of conduct, I would think it's a bit outdated and in need of a refre *CLOSED*"
Yep, it's a pretty standard practice that all MMOs and even some single player games do.
I'm glad to hear things are running well.
Is it? just few months after release?
How come GW2 didn't follow this standard practise? it is only now after almost 2 years that 2 people left GW2 team and that also on their own terms and were not fired.
Some developers are freelancers (self employed) and will be released from their contracts once the game is live and working, they then move onto other games and mmo's. It is a cheaper option for companies to employ short term labour this way.
Most development studios do this when you read about the companies after each release of a game. Same happens on building sites as well, when a project is finished the agency and self employed people are released from their contracts and allowed to move onto the next project with a different company.
Originally posted by Dreamo84 It is common practice. But some companies like ArenaNet and Blizzard increased their workforce after launching WoW and GW2 respectively.
Doesn't ultimately mean anything as people will just decide for theirselves based on their biased opinion whether the game/company are successful or not. Actual reports mean nothing to many "players".
That is not true Blizzard laying off 600 people also in 2012 so please keep to fact would you that was around when Cataclysm expansion end and start of Mists of Pandaria expansion.
Blizzard Entertainment, creator of the perennially popular World of Warcraft, announced today that it would be laying off 600 of its employees worldwide. While Blizzard takes care to note that WoW's development won't be impacted by the layoffs, we find it a bit difficult to take solace in that fact when hundreds of people are losing their jobs.
Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime commented on the layoffs, stating that "Constant evaluation of teams and processes is necessary for the long-term health of any business. Over the last several years, we've grown our organization tremendously and made large investments in our infrastructure in order to better serve our global community. However, as Blizzard and the industry have evolved we've also had to make some difficult decisions in order to address the changing needs of our company." Understandable, perhaps, considering the fluctuating nature of the industry, but we still wish those Blizzard employees hit by the layoffs the very best in their future endeavors. Good luck, folks.

No, I don't see that happening any time soon.
They can not be forced to do so. Like any company that is not forced to publish any kind of information, they will not do so. Since that kind of information is buisness secret.
As for layoffs - its normal to lay off extra support staff. Game came to level where it is stable. They do not expect new influx of players until console release.
So you lay off extra staff and then call them to come back when needed again. Some come, some dont. Just the way it is.
Its none essential staff when it comes to game development in this stage.
As for Blizzard 600 layoffs - same as above. They do not expect increase n sub numbers that would allow large support staff to be viable.
Yep, it's a pretty standard practice that all MMOs and even some single player games do.
I'm glad to hear things are running well.
True but you know all the haters are going to jump all over this with prophetic zeal about how the game is bombing hard, f2p in a week blah blah yada yada..
I still haven't heard Guild Wars 2 laying off staff, so they got that going for them, which is nice. Can't say the same about TESO

I havent heard simply means - I am uninformed. It does not mean it did not happened.
And you need to learn to read. True the article has a catchy name, but its obvious its about NCSoft and not ArenaNET as much as you want it to be arena net
Infact, you are the uninformed one because ANet has increased and kept increasing its work force over the course of 2 years now. And they are still hiring, so they got that going for them, which is nice.
... Also it's spelled "You're".
Yup, that's what uncle Google gives to the fanboys. Well ill say this I participated in the beta and when it released I didn't buy because of bugs mechanics and the swarm of players that would clog the server I bought this past Monday and I'm enjoying the game actually enjoy the story wtf I always hate quest grinding I'm at lvl 10 today and can't wait to see more of the content as I lvl

Have you ever worked as a contracted IT specialist? I have.
At the end of a project, I wasn't laid off, I wasn't terminated, there was no reduction. It's just a fulfillment of the contract. "KTHXBYE" That's all there is to it. It's part of the project. It's a completely different expense for the company and how it's budgeted. Since they aren't employees, they aren't "let go".
Contracted employees, guess what happens when the contract ends, they get get released, I wish they would not even report this kind of stuff, it has nothing to do with the operation of the game, it is a standard business practice that most if not all gaming companies use.
Now had they said, The Konk, Paul Sage, or Wheeler, or Firor had been released, then I might have reason for pause. But that is not the case.

Yeah, lol. I actually canceled my sub on the PC because I just felt like this game would be a lot more fun on the PS4. I didn't want to burn myself out, or ruin anything with the story, etc.
Don't get me wrong, it's not bad on the PC; however, I have enough games on that platform and I'm always looking for more games to play during the times I'm in the mood to kick back on the couch and take advantage of my much bigger LCD TV.

It fits the pattern.
Game's player base grows > Game's workforce grows.
Game's player base declines > Game's workforce declines.
