World of Warcraft: Robin Williams Memorial Island Datamined in Warlords Beta

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Wowhead has a report and several screens that have been datamined from the World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor beta that shows the Robin Williams memorial. The information was datamined by beta players. After Williams' death last month, Blizzard confirmed that it would memorialize him in WoW and it has kept its word.

You can summon Robin by rubbing the Ever-Burning Lamp. When first summoned, he exclaims "INFINITE COSMIC POWER" and then shrinks and waves goodbye, saying "itty bitty living space."

Nearby is a large broken egg, a tribute to the character Mork. We have datamined an alternate version of Robin dressed like Mork with overalls, so perhaps he will make an appearance here as well.

There are also some stuffed animals and tanks, hinting at a potential tribute to Toys. Our third datamined Robin NPC is also dressed like Mrs. Doubtfire.

Finally, we have datamined a Comedian title--it currently has no source, but it would be fitting if it was tied to this tribute in some way.

Check out all of the screens at Wowhead.com.

I am no longer subscribed to WoW, but as I had stated in another thread once they implement this tribute they'll earn a month of subscription from me.  Nice of Blizzard paying genuine respect to Robin Williams.  Hopefully they got his voice along with various easter-eggs of reference.

Sure Joan Rivers. Let's just add more dead people to the game. lol....

Joan and her daughter were still raiding with us as of two weeks ago..

Okay, not really.  I don't know if that was her daughter or not.

Okay, not really at all.  That would have been awesome though.  Joan Rivers was one of a kind.

While I loved Robin Williams and I think it's a very nice gesture, I still think it's a slippery slope to start doing this.  Where does it end?  How retroactive do they need to be now, to include other famous people that played WoW at some point before passing away that never saw this kind of attention?

    I'm just saying.

Ummmmmm, if it's a slippery slope than it has been for years. In case you've never played the game, Blizzard has a metric ton of pop culture/celebrity references baked into each release. You don't need to be a celebrity, though. They've immortalized numerous regular Joe players in the past, as has most every long-running MMO out there.

Character models look kind of like crap. Hopefully they do a bit better so the npc is more recognisable.  Good on them regardless.

Just curious, why would Nintendo do this? Is there some Robin Williams - Nintendo connection that I don't know about?

"as has most every long-running MMO out there", eh?  Yeah, no.. Not really.

And for the record, we were discussing celebrities that had both played WoW *and* passed away.  Your reply was way off the mark.  Almost as if you hadn't been reading the thread.

He named his daughter Zelda, after the game from Nintendo.

Um. if Robin can be in the game then why not my friend Shaun. He played WOW as well and passed away recently in a car accident.... just saying. Keep it out of the Game! I play games to avoid reality not immerse myself in it.

    Yep.

I think it is a lack of creativity to do stuff like this.

WoW has so much potential to create it's own lore and try new and cool stories but they go the lazy route.

Case in point was Uldum. Man the entire area was a total ripoff of Indiana Jones(a very bad interpretation btw) and was the signal that they had run out of ideas.
