How important is character customisation?

And I mean physical appearance.  

For me I like to have a unique (ish) looking toon.  I also like cosmetic items.  It is quite a big deal for me, I can lose connection with a game at the character creation screen if the customization options are too limited, partly because it strikes me as lazy design, but mainly because if I have to settle for a character I don't like then I start the game in the wrong frame of mind.  

I think that physical customisation is often overlooked by developers.  Or maybe I am just odd?

    I would agree about the importance of distinguishing oneself... however, in practice, what happens 99% of the time is that you can't see most of the customization, because you see your character from behind, and other people rarely care. As for the body, with armor covering it, it's also pointless, and as for gear, well I always use what has the best stats, appearance is secondary. So, in the end cosmetics in an MMO is not all that important, I think...
