My first 20 minutes in ArcheAge

KarbleKarble Member UncommonPosts: 750

I waited a long time for this game. It has not let me down so far.

I had already downloaded Glyph over a month ago. I clicked it and it gave me a notification and quickly updated. Then I clicked ArcheAge and it began download. It seemed to take about 2 hours from start of download to my first character creation. Quite speedy on my 20 Mbps internet.

I do not have a smoking pc but was very impressed to see the frame rates hovering around 50 to 77 frames per second once I turned it on in the game options. I also adjusted my resolution. I saw also that all settings were on very high and the game is impressive to look at.

I could get lost in the character creation part of things. So many small choices I truly felt spoiled a bit.

So finally with choices made, I enter the game as a healer.

The tutorials were kind of not needed for anyone that has played MMOs but it was done well and could be very informative for first timers. I turned it off after the first 5 minutes.

I found the various options of how to control your character, interact with the world, and adjust the UI  and all the options to be spot on.

I found my first few quests and learned some attacks. I would usually start by pulling from a distance with an arrow followed by my healer dps spell and finishing with a good sword swing and a kick. I found this all to be very intuitive. I have never seen that in a game where you just naturally switch between ranged weapon and sword without any equipping or swapping. Very well done.

I encountered my first building with npcs and checked one to see what she was selling. Also tried out climbing a ladder on the building (love that being included). I then proceeded to the quests and found the rewards good. Part of them was potions and the other was I think some tokens of some sort. Also some bag that seemed to give me more exp when I opened them, but cost a labor point each. This was fine since I had alot of labor and nothing to spend it on.

I got to level 3 and unlocked a skill within my class. I then scaled a random mountain to see if I could and found a view up top. Was hoping for more draw distance but maybe that will come later.

Over all I had a great time in my first play session.

There were really only 2 negatives for me.

1. the npc I ran up to at the first building said something to me as I greeted her in Korean voice. Same happened as I walked away. Tried it a few times with same result. I thought they had translated the game completely. Hope these small things get fixed. Not a deal breaker...just doesn't fit with immersion.

2. Draw distance. Maybe the draw distance is scaled back due to trying to keep frame rates even or ? At any rate I hope this can be improved on since the game world seems large and it would be nice to see some views from the hillside without it blurring farther objects to the point they are almost unrecognizable.

My thoughts after this short time......they have a sleeper hit in ArcheAge. The complexity of all the different functions I looked through and the ease with which it was all available and connected really called to me. Can't wait to log in again. Will definately be subscribing to this and maybe buying the $50 package for the early access.

I also played a bit yesterday. Draw distance is a problem for me too. On the other hand one of my drawbacks, graphics, seems to get used by my eyes as the times goes. Only combat and animations are still things i don't like much.

Anyway if the game is playable as F2P (at least if i can own some land) i think i m going to play it more than i thought.

You can disable the blurring effect completely in game settings

You can also increase the draw distance if your PC is fast enough to handle it

I'd highly recommend playing in DX9 mode - DX11 in AA needs a beastly gaming rig

My computer is already 3 years old, built it with 1,000 Euros (+keyboard, mouse, headphones, computer case, and sound system)

Running DX11 and max settings like a boss,Feels good man :)

Basically clicking away text windows ruins every MMO, try to have fun instead of rushing things. Without story and lore all there is left is a bunch of mechanics.

Why you are saying this? I have a low rig (Q9400 + 6950 + 8gb ddr3) and i can say this is one of the lightest mmo's. Everything in ultra + dx11 and i can play it at least decently. This was an unexpected and very positive surprise for me :)

Might want to check your GPU temps when surrounded by about 70+ other players.

Also for me in PvP - frames > looks and DX9 is simply faster

    Just my 2c

Maybe you are right. I m speaking while my experience is in the 10 first lvl area. I ll check DX9 also

Thanks very much for letting me know. I dug around in the settings and found something (think it was HDR) and switched it and now can see full views and no blur. Looks amazing.

    Update....

Haven't had much time lately but managed another 28 minutes.

I had a ton of fun so far. Climbed a tree to find a little girl's doll. Copied an engraving from a big stone. planted a small tree and chopped it down after it matured enough. Checked out a nice house. Got to level 5 and picked a second class which is the opposite side of my healer. So now I can heal and nuke and throw down some sustained damage. My guy is shaping up better than I originally thought. Oh and some creatures totally were grabbing at my guy with mud hand.  I very much want to log in again and have more fun but am worried I will spoil some of the fun of the game once it goes live in another 6 days for head start.

I hope there will be several head start servers. Would want to make a character on a server that doesn't have any que to get in and also one that doesn't have overly crazypants guilds that have 5000 members and crazy requirements and power trips. I guess that part doesn't matter as much since I can always start new on other servers if I get bugged like that.

Couldn't sleep last night and logged a few hours.

I am now past level 10. The amount of things I have learned and seen in this short period of time is extensive.

I got my first few deaths this session. I saw a particularly large and challenging looking level 12 wraith mob with a scythe roaming around and tried to solo him. He had 3 stars and wiped me out fairly quickly.  I then grouped with another person and we tried again and got wiped again. My guess is this mob is meant for 3 players or a full group at that level. wonder if it drops something?  I also saw a level 30 tough mob within a pack of breeze elementals. Nice to see content we can come back to and conquer later on in these early locations.

I really enjoy the combo of classes I picked. Edgewalker is what my guy is called and he has heal, regen, snares, a long cast nuke, a continued press dot, a rapid fire kind of nuke. This is just the beginning. can't wait till I have more points in the coming levels.

I am starting to feel a bit attached to this guy I made, which is important to me. This means I will continue this feeling of investment in the gaming world of ArcheAge more and more. I now have a full suit of armor basically and weapon and other things including a great mount and a row boat. Feeling pretty powerful and free in the game to do whatever. I visited Marage Island and also got a farm quest which I am sure I could complete.....I may try to not log back in again before launch though. I will actually have a bit of sadness when they take an eraser to what I have done. We shall see if I can resist...lol.

Why do people care about the opinions of someone that played for 20 minutes?

    i care.

when you read further, you would have seen that he played more than 20 minutes. And its good to read something positive as a first impression.

yeah, its nice to see someone posting something positive for once on these forums, glad your enjoying the game OP.  I have played in the last closed beta and a lot in the open beta, my experiences have been similar.  I'm level 14 and the last day or so i have done minimal quests, its been mostly figuring out trade runs, finding hiding places to raise/grow whats needed for the runs, and just exploring.  each level i increase pushes me further and further from the quest grind it seems like in the beginning.

oh and just to clarify, im lvl 14 but it doesn't take that long to get there, I had a lvl20 already that i just pretty much quest grinded to 20, so in open beta i rerolled to try amd go a little different route.

Just the way it is sometimes.  I've tried to get into GW2 several times, highest character I got was level 22.

Forum Post count does not = Game Intelligence or Knowledge  it just shows how often people like to talk.

I'm the exact same way with GW2. But, the beauty is it's B2P and we can go back when we want to try it again.

DX9 is much easier on the eyes and I have less graphical glitches. DX11 had no fps issues for me just multiple graphical issues.

Now Playing: Bless / Summoners War
Looking forward to: Crowfall / Lost Ark / Black Desert Mobile
