Elite: Dangerous: Exploration is Key

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The latest Elite: Dangerous newsletter has been sent out. In this week's note, the team discusses how exploration will be a key factor in the game in order to find new areas and resources.

Exploration is something many people are excited about, but we haven’t yet discussed it here. There is exploration for the sake of it, but it is also possible to make money from exploring too. There is a lot out there – which will be covered more in future newsletters – many surprising things like the many planets with neon atmospheres – things not yet seen in astronomy.

The great thing about exploration is it is many-layered; one person might be the first to visit a system – but this is an easy thing to do, and one person can visit a great many systems in a short period of time, so rapidly the ‘frontier’ of unvisited systems will quickly recede.

this game is great and has a lot of things for it. the graphics are amazing, the docking/undocking it's awesome, space travel is well done. the universe does feel insanely large. fighting is fun if you have a decent ship.... oh and OR implementation is fantastic :D.....

having said that i'm not sold on all the phasing(32 player instances) which make playing with a friend on the Online side a nightmare. also if you don't have a RL friend actively trying to play with you, this game is one of the most antisocial online games i've ever seen.

Except for the very rare would be ganker, there is absolutely no reason to interact with other players....and so nobody does. i've spent hours trying to get anyone to say Hello without a single response. hopefully this gets changed soon.

    That's pretty off topic :p

But anyways, the current multi-player part is still a work in progress.  You shouldn't have trouble playing with friends in the final game.   The devs very much want to encourage coop multi player.  So, just give it time.

Well, it isn't required that anyone has to play with anyone else in the online mode...thankfully. You can if you want to but you can also play with ONLY your friends (which is much easier to join up with) or solo online. There is suppose to also be a solo OFFLINE mode coming as well. Frankly, would be social with anyone that is truly friendly in game in the purely online game, but you just don't know who you can trust. Hence, I play either with friends only or solo. I will not be fodder for the r/l ganker. The AI "gankers" are enough as it is.

really wish games like STO would implement a system of exploration that was anywhere near close.

The game looks great, but it is still just a flight simulator with space ships.  You will never steer a ship in space like that.

    It's a game.

If you're interested in to-the-point mass behavior and steering in space then NASA has some interesting demos for the public.

Saying. Great space game is like a Flight simulator in space is like saying a great fantasy mmorpg is just a hero simulator on a world.

    rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar

Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D

LOL it's not a flight simulator. If it was it'd be an embarrasing attempt at flight simulation. It's a space simulator if anything.

    The exploration details sound great.

I'm in love with this game. Can't wait for future implementations and even more exploration!

Wtf this guy is doing in a gamming forum ?!

I want this so bad ! but paying $25 more just out of anxiety to play ain't worth it.

It seems an interesting exploration system, i wish this game had planetary interactions as well, landing, maybe walking with a space suit ! But thats too much to ask, i guess.

Is this an mmo or instanced game play? It looks good either way but I don't want to get into it and get something i was not anticipating.
  • It's a hybrid. Everyone shares the same galaxy, but at any small area of space there can be a maximum of 32 players. If there are more, they will be in a different instance of that small bit of space.
