If you've ever been to Dragon Con, you know that costuming is a big deal at the Atlanta-based convention. This year broke another record with a reported 63,000 attendees paying tribute to their favorite sci-fi and fantasy genres of pop culture, and the costumes seem to get better each year.

I think making the outfits would be pretty cool, and walking around in an outfit would be pretty cool, but the acting portion of cosplay sets it pretty far outside of my comfort zone.  For all I know I would be great at acting out the part of some character, but I would be so uncomfortable doing it that it wouldn't matter.  So:

I look at Cosplay as softcore porn really.  No interest dressing up myself but love looking at the chicks in costumes.

I think it would be great, but I know myself well enough to know I would probably get out of hand, I avoid situations where I sense that might happen. I am destined to be a hermit, living a quiet, boring, long hard life practicing makrothumia all of my days.

Not really. I was never much into that kind of thing.

I might be persuaded if a lot of my friends were doing it, but I don't see that happening.

I was talking with a gamer friend last weekend and one interesting topic was noticing the rise of LARP and cosplay as compared with the decline in community theatre. It made us wonder if these are just new forms of theatre.

Call it cosplay if you want, but I like making costumes of super hero's I really like. I also do it because of all of girls that are into it. Great way to ease into talking to hot chicks in other wise tight colorful clothing. Hell, one of my lady friends that cosplays, invited me to travel with her and her friends to a con in new Hampshire. We are all staying in the same hotel and I'm the only guy ;p

I've created a Rorschach costume, The Question, Judge Dredd, and very soon about to finish my full body commander Shepard costume.

I personally don't know yet, since I've never really driven around new Hampshire (I'm from Massachusetts) but we are not heading over there until next month.

Are there any sociology students in the house that want a project to work on?  This sounds like something that might generate some interest.

It's a further extension of expression of what you like. The cosplayer is taking it up one notch (in many cases much more) higher than the base level fan. It is not for everyone but don't denigrate those who do it.

LOL, yep that picture reflects how I feel about any participation by myself in Cosplay.

But like someone said, some of the girls do come up with some pretty "creative" costumes.

My wife usually smacks me about now.

Interesting theory.   I think one could make the argument for COSPLAY being a new form of interactive theatre, but I don't know about LARP.

I can really identify with where you are coming from I felt really selfconcious about the whole thing and just couldn't bring myself to do it.

But then a very close friend introduced me to his Larp club: http://www.labyrinthe.co.uk/, he had been trying to get me to go for ages and it was only because it was his brithday and all our other mates had agreed to go I finally got over myself and went.  It's set in dungeons made up of underground chalk caves and nobody who isn't involved is watching.

Turned out I loved it, totally immersion, really good excercise and met some really nice normal people (police officers, lawyers, school teachers and a professional sportsman) not like i expected at all.

I have been doing it twice a month for almost 2 years now and even did a week long in-character holiday living in a Yert in a secluded forest is Wales. Its so much more interesting that other forms of excercise and I come away feeling really good and relaxed.

I still don't know if I could walk down a busy street dressed up and Roleplaying so respect to those pictured above. My advice has to be if you like RPG video games get over yourself and try it , if you live in the UK try :http://www.labyrinthe.co.uk/.

"On the other hand only a single guy out of all my male gamer friends will do cosplay mostly because his wife forces him to do it with her. My theory - girls are the driving force behind cosplay."

It is an excuse to dress up when you older than preteen, without the girls these events would die. Felt sorry for the fellow who was forced to go though. I am guessing he went as Hans Solo or Captain Picard. :)

Video game cosplay is what keeps communities alive. If people weren't doing this kind of thing the communities would fall apart very quickly. How many games have you seen fall completely flat just a couple of months after release? If not for the extremely active fans keeping a game alive it just dies. This is something companies should actively support and encourage like SoE does with FanFaire and WoW does with Blizzardcon. It is part of the advertizing. Get some live actors to dress up as characters and the fans follow along as well. SoE paying a model a few hundred dollars to cosplay Firiona Vie is what got the fans fired up when Everquest launched in 1999.

How do you pry those teenage gamers away from the XBOX booth and into PC driven MMOs? Easy some him this:

I always saw cosplay as an excuse for grown ups to wear their princess dresses, commando outfits or favorite superhero tights from childhood in hopes of not being thought they're weird.
