personal spaceship and ground combat too?

One thing I really liked about SWG was that I could fly my own spaceship, shoot down some bad guys, then go to a different planet, land and do stuff as a person too. I'm pretty sure nothing like that exists anymore, but I'd be happy to be wrong! (I do know about SWG Emu already)

Thanks,
Matt

Thanks for the reply! I thought that the spaceships in SWTOR were basically just their version of housing though, except for some instanced battleground type stuff. I haven't checked out STO because I'm not a big Star Trek fan and I thought it was all group based stuff, but I'll take a look.

    Thanks,
    Matt

Nope, in STO ships are part of your build, and almost half of your gameplay is in space, with instances and such. So it's not just a mini-hub with insta travel like in TOR :)

Some of the STFs are pretty fun actually, though most times they have the usual layout of couple waves of adds, a mini-boss and a boss. When the first time you face a borg red alert, and the boss arrives... a memorable "oh, sh.t" moment indeed :)

"I thought it was all group based stuff"  well, it's an mmo... but you can solo your way up to the cap, ant there are plenty of solo stuff you can do after that too, if you don't want the regular endgame treadmill with a fleet.

Salvation Prophecy, not an MMO, but it has those two features.

“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

You're pretty much right, space combat on SWTOR is all about missions in a pre-defined area, or PvPing in what amounts to a battleground.

No manual flying between planets and shooting stuff along like way like SWG had it. I can't speak for STO as I've never tried it. (Not much a Trekkie either to be honest)

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

In STO there is :) Your ship is your "mount" too, besides being your avatar (with your space skills on the hotbar, etc.)

And in space you can do everything you can do on ground, questing, gathering, trading, doing instances, using the DOff system, etc. I think you only can't craft, that's a ground-only feature. Or at least was, haven't been on Memory Alpha since years, crafting is not STO's main strength.

Here's an old STOked video about moving in sector space: http://youtu.be/ABMUy-xZ8Qg  and if you approach a system, you can exit sector space ("switch back to normal space", slowing down from warp speed) and flying around in that system.

You can pilot an inter-planar aethership in Lusternia, land on the various elemental or cosmic planes, do some PvE / PvP, etc.

I would stay away from Star Trek Online.  IMO its a pretty good example of what not to do given the situation.  It was unplayable at one point and while it improved somewhat, its still far from a good gaming experience.  Sadly it had so much potential.  Maybe Star CItizen down the road, not sure about it but who knows when it will be coming out.

Thank you for the suggestions, for now I am enjoying STO! The ground missions are a little bit bland, but the ship combat is fun (kind of EVE-lite), and until SWGemu releases JTL I don't think there's any other MMORPG that comes close to what I'm looking for.

This is what I get for watching Firefly again, I suppose. :P

Hey just wanted to pass on some information about Star Wars: The Old Republic as I too was a big fan of SWG and have been looking for a replacement for a long time. They have just added several thing to the game in the past few months making making the game a lot better. I my self just joined back up with them for these changes are they are pretty good so far. They have added as of a few months ago a new PVP where you can fly around in a ship (not the same as the one you get from you story arch) and can customize. While this is for PVP currently I can see them expanding on this in time to come, as a lot of people didn't like to on rails ship mini games that released with the game. They are also adding a new player and guild housing system (currently in early access) With this sytem they have also added Guild housing and a guild capital ship. All of which you can decorated somewhat like housing in SWG. If you would like to check it out it is fee to play so nothing to loose, also look me up I am on the sever The Bastion, I work on both Sith and Republic characters so if have questions or need some I will be more than willing. Sith character's Wilbus or Atzelav or Republic Justren are the ones I am on most the time.

Yeah, there's not currently a whole lot of games out that mix spaceships and avatars.  Star Citizen appears as if it will be the next decent one to take a shot at it... but that's still a good ways from release.

Most of the games either do full spaceship gameplay without ground stuff, or vice versa.

SC is supposedly setting up not only the flight sim aspect, but FPS style ship-boarding actions, etc., so I'd suggest just keeping a lazy eye on that and dinking around in STO or something in the meantime.  Or if you are in the mood for pure flight-sim in space, I hear Vendetta Online is an option... but I don't think it has a large population.
