Minecraft: It's Official: Microsoft Owns Mojang

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Minecraft founder Notch has officially confirmed last week's rumor that Microsoft would be purchasing the game's development studio, Mojang, for a whopping $2.5 billion. Microsoft's Phil Spencer, head of the XBox division, made a statement as well.

"Minecraft adds diversity to our game portfolio and helps us reach new gamers across multiple platforms," says Xbox chief Phil Spencer. "Gaming is the top activity across devices and we see great potential to continue to grow the Minecraft community and nurture the franchise. That is why we plan to continue to make Minecraft available across platforms – including iOS, Android and PlayStation, in addition to Xbox and PC."

    from article:

Minecraft creator Markus Persson, known as Notch, will not be joining Microsoft as part of the acquisition. "He’s decided that he doesn’t want the responsibility of owning a company of such global significance," says Mojang’s Owen Hill.

I fully expect to see this happen. Faster and more frequent updates on Xbox as well as Xbox exclusive content, and perhaps them putting the PC version on their Windows App Store or whatever the hell it's called.

Now I am not sure how much of that 2.5 billion Notch gets to take home. But with that kind of money he could easily sell off the company and startup a new one making other games that he has been wanting to make.

Well, if we know one thing, it's that Notch is a very humble person.......

Yes.... yes, that was sarcasm......... Unless Mojang did something other than create a single game...... and not even, really, create any content for it. Or create any graphics. But, yeah! The global significance is on par with that of nuclear weapons, for sure.

Well... I can´t say i blame him. I´d done that too in a heartbeat. And while Notch will not see all of that money i am sure he will see a decent reward for his time.

Personally i never bothered with Mincecraft, graphics got me every time i tried. So i can not say how this will affect the game but there is a fair chance that there will be changes. =)

Best of luck to everyone i guess.

This have been a good conversation

Now that Minecraft is going to shift focus towards XBox, I wonder if this will impact the modders of Minecreft Like Tekkit and FTB.

    My thought exactly.

I make spreadsheets at work - I don't want to make them for the games I play.

My guess is that they already looked at how they are going to monetize it over the next few years and know "about" how much they plan to get for their investment.

We'll see if they are successful or not.

If they can sell another 125 million copies of the game at $20 a piece they will break even. I really am curious what their strategy will be. They definitely need to be pretty aggressive in milking the IP if they want to see a profit from it within the next decade.

Minecraft is going strong but it won't last forever.

    Dear Microsoft,

Please claim copyright on minecraft-youtube to cleaning this crap. Thank you

    Why not?

Notch doesn't have much to do with MC anymore and MC is all his "company" has that's worth mentioning.  2.5b is a crapton of money.  He'll probably bail out before too long and start a new company.

The pace of development with minecraft has been painfully slow and pathetic and the game has a ton of potential to be even better that their glacial pace is never realizing.  They STILL haven't even taken care of built-in mod support and it's been at least a year since they said they were going to do it.

So why not?  Why not cash in on a stupidly large amount of mnoey.

One reason MC is still relevant (on PC at least) is modders and modding so it'll be interesting to see how that goes.  If MS tampers with that that'll likely chop the PC market down to nothing.

Premium MMORPGs do not feature built-in cheating via cash for gold pay 2 win. PLAY to win or don't play.

Everyone has their price and I guess Microsoft just found out what Notch's was.

Personally I don't see the value in Mojang unless Microsoft expects to sell something to all those existing Minecraft players.  Is this a sign of Minecraft 2 or some form of paid expansion or is Realms doing better than I would guess?

I think for $2.5 Billion I'd take up this game called "Being a rich mutli-billionaire in real life".  I hear it's one of the best games in the world :)

It's possible he is a hypocrite.

Then again, it's possible that he just learned a valuable lesson.

Like when you are young and you claim that you will always do this ... and never do that .... (fill in the blanks) and then you grow up and you find yourself not doing this and always doing that.

When faced with such a large sum of money that can enable you to do so many things. Some good things I imagine (not just for yourself) suddenly the perspective changes.

Then again, he might very well be a hypocrite.

Oh my god how they came up with this price for that garbage. Some people really have issues of perceived value.

Why pay so much for this blocky shit? 2.5 bil, wow. For that amount of money you can hire a decent devs (not that microsoft doesn't have one of the finest) and do EQ:Next clone for fucks sake. Not even the team at Mojang is worth that much. They are bunch of java devs. You can find java devs every freaking where. Hell, for that amount of cash you can even train retards to make a better product.

I wonder if I can make a picture of my poop and sell it for few grands to Microsoft, for good measure. If I was an investor at Microsoft, I would be really worried about the actions of this new CEO. Mojang is not worth 10th of this price.

And if they are hoping that people will buy xbox because of some minecraft exclusives, they are completely delusional
