[Column] Guild Wars 2: The September Patch Did Some Good

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

I know some will rage a bit because of my title for this piece, and I know things seem really rough right now for the Guild Wars 2 community. Trust me I’m right there with you.  A few weeks ago I went over the idea of level gating.  I’m not a fan of it, but still, the September Feature pack is live, and now that I’ve played it I see that it isn’t all bad.

Dead more of David North's Guild Wars 2: The September Patch Did Some Good.

This tiny compass reminds me of the one used in the original Guild Wars.

Love the game also but this update really doesnt do anything for me.   Where is the content expansion?   (looks in to the future.....6 months, 1 year,  2 years.......)

Other than their alt killing features on these two patches (talking about traits costing gold rather than karma and the problems that came with advancement being in the wrong place) I think the new direction and new focus is a good one, hopefully they can bring this game back to it's roots away from the 1%.

Kinda bummed about the adrenaline decay for warriors, literally just thinned out the number of potential builds by doing so.  A few classes IMO still need some serious tweaking and buffs (I'd love to actually enjoy playing my Necro but PUGs don't like us all that much) and I'm dying to see some end game content expansion.  Living story is cool and all but the times for update are still pretty far apart and what it brings to the table isn't anything mind blowing.  I want to see a focus on a true content expansion and level cap raise.  You can try to shift momentum away from the end game all you want but it's still going to come back to that no matter what you do.  GW2 isn't exactly the longest leveling curve of a game out there, it's not like getting to 80 is this incredibly arduous task that only the elite are capable of.  Developers don't make games like that any longer for a number of reasons.

Arena net keeps saying they are working on all this "stuff" but can't reveal them just yet until they are 100% sure the new change or addition is even possible.

I believe arena net will come out with an expansion, just not any time soon. Right now, we are getting feature packs, living story, and pvp updates. If an expansion were to come out I believe it would expand on the other continents gw1 had. The living story portion would then have to relate to the expansion.

I remember they saying they are not even thinking on making a expansion and I hope they don't. game can evolve using the living story pretty well.

also the warrior adrenalin decay is not really that biggie, killed mostly the knockdown starter from hammer builds but adrena are build faster now anyway.

what annoyed more was the bleed remove from rifle, but I already fixed that by changing a sigil.

now a good nerf on thiefs that is something we will never really see

A.Net said NO EXPANSIONS 3 to 6 months into the game. People keep saying, "Where is the expansion?' Well learn to read. That is what the living world is about. They are trying to add areas that way and to make it more interesting. They have destroyed LA and the rebuild is going on. I am noticing all the small changes, it is pretty neat.

No other game has done this, so we will see where it goes. I think we will end up in the Crystal Desert eventually....

Alot of empty space on that map to add stuff.

I'll be 85 years old by the time the Cantha is unveiled.

They keep updating minor things which sound awesome at the first glimpse, but soon you realise it's nothing really special. They should add some more zones and stuff.

They have done that. They have also added new group events into older areas to make them feel newer and to involve the WHOLE WORLD in the story, unlike expansions in which everyone leaves the original area and it is dead again.

The problem with expansions is there are people who will grind it until done and then complain that there is not enough content. A.Net and every game company is damned if they do and damned if they don't.

And NC soft said there would be one. And since a lot of players demanded one have ANET hinted that one might be in the making.

No, there will be an expansion eventually, ANET have far too many people working on their single game (besides GW1 that doesn't get anything added anymore besides reruns of old holiday events) to not make an expansion, or to be exact a new campaign.

Adding Cantha or Elona as a connected stand alone game like Factions and Nightfall would allow them to stay true to their original word but still make people wanting a paid expansion happy. And they do know that it works.

Anyways, this patch wasn't much of a deal to me, some tweaking, better instancing and a bit fixing to the mega servers together with a better bank tab. Already have 9 characters so I honestly don't care either way for the changes to the noob experience.

Yeah, but opening up a new continent like they did in GW1 which really can be played alone is still pretty awesome. Larger world for all of us.

A standard EQ/WoW like expansion on the other hand would probably not make the game more fun. Adding 5 or 10 new level, let all previous good gear be useless and restart peoples grind would be against everything ANET worked for since they started.

Don't expect Cantha - this game is dealing with the Elder Dragons. Cantha closed itself off because of the Elder Dragons. So expect areas of Shiverpeaks, Crystal Desert, and eventually the deep sea Elder Dragon.

I don't think standalone expansions are a necessity, but however they do it I would love to see Cantha and Elona open up. Just because Cantha is closed off now doesn't mean it couldn't open due to a future event. The closing is arbitrary. I wouldn't mind seeing entirely new areas either, but I want to see those areas or whatever exists in that spot. It would make the game feel more complete to me.

saying cantha won't open up eventually can be amistake too like you said the story will be around the elder dragons, but its kinda possible a elder dragon attack massivaly cantha and they are forced to ask for help or even flee, we can jsut wait and see what they will do

I like some of the things added... Trading Post ability to search by armor weights.

But the New Player Experience is fail.  Instead of forcing someone to learn mechanics through a Tutorial Instance, they instead lock things behind levels, then simply flash "THIS IS AVAILABLE NOW!".

That doesn't teach anything, it only tells you.  Honestly, it isn't much better than what it was.  And for players that have been playing a long time, the gating is just plain boring to tears.

All things and patch notes aside, still no obvious reason for old players to relog. Just none! No content!
  • JorendoJorendo Member UncommonPosts: 275

With the risk of sounding like a huge elitist "The goal for the new player experience is to give direction to those that are stepping foot onto Tyria for their first time." NO! Just NO! This needs to stop. They need to stop making games for brainless turds. If people can't be arsed to press the map button then that's their problem!

I'm sick and tired of games going this way. I mean seriousely stop this hand holding. If people can't even be bothered to open the map to look where to go and just explore then why the heck do they play games? Really part of GW2 was the exploration. If you can't find your missing quest then you are doing some insanely wrong and didn't explore the whole map. If you want some stupid arrow to point you the way then please by all means go play a mainstream game on superduper easy mode. This BS needs to stop. And no the excuse "it's just a option" doesn't do it for me. The fact that they keep doing this, they always want to please new players. New players who are that stupid or simply can't be bothered have no place in certain games.  GW2 doesn't do much different then MMO's used to do. Its pathetic how we need to please people who don't even apreaciate what a game is and don't want to put some minimum effort in exploring. This BS killed WoW for me back then, it killed pretty much the sense of exploration in MMO's for me, all these arrows and marked zones on the maps. Sorry people if you don't wanna explore a world given to you then by all means go play a singleplayer game, but stop trying to please these people. They can't even learn how to game for real if they aren't willing to put a bit of effort in it.

My son and I rolled new chars to try out the new player experience and it's definitely not as big a deal as people are making it out to be.

The leveling is so fast that you'll be past the majority of 'gates' within an hour or two.

If this helps ANet / GW2 continue to be successful, it's a small price for dedicated fans to pay to ensure that the game they enjoy so much will be around for years to come.
