I thought the same thing of EQ1 and left for 8 years, was so nice when I came back to have my chars intact. That moved earned them a year of sub. When I left Warhammer online and came back a year later and all my char names were gone, I just unsubbed. Paying for head start to get the names you want often means a lot to players. Other not so much.
On the one hand I certainly can't fault Blizz for doing this, between the rather generous 6 years and plenty of notice it's hard to see how anyone could.
On the other hand, I'm unconvinced this will open up the name floodgates the way people seem to think and it's not anywhere close to being a permanent solution.
There are so many better options than the "One unique name, no spaces, per server" thing, why so many games stick to it these days is a bit of a mystery to me.
After i read this, i checked my battle.net account for when my WoW sub expired and found that i could activate a 10 day MoP trial.
Clicked the button, logged into the game which was still installed on my pc, logged out after checking my old chars and running some circles in Dalaran and Orgrimmar.
No matter how hard all mmorpgs in the last ten years failed, i guess there is just no way back to WoW for me.
So, basically, you just screwed new/existing players out of potentially getting those names that you will never, ever use again?
Classy move, champ.
OR those new players could ocme up with a name that is not used before instead of leeching on other player's names.

I'm definitely in the category of "not so much."
Especially with a title I'm done with. But if I did care, I'd take time to sub up periodically so I wouldn't be forgotten, like say I do with EVE.

No one ever tries to steal the names I have so I am not that interested in this offer. Plus I have like a notebook full of names I have found, created from books ,movies and even accidentally using the name creator that looked good.
I was thinking of resubbing to keep a few of my names since I have original ones (Bob, Frost, Death, etc) but I just realized I can do the MoP trial. Glad I read this thread!
About once a year or so the subscription games give out a free week of gameplay. I usually login to check everything out.

Of course.
May have to log back in just to keep some of my names
Whisperwind
DeathBlade
CrazyOrk
AngryGnome
a few Dracarys (back when the book came out not the show)
Mordenkainen (coolest name from AD&D)
Merlynd (2nd coolest name from AD&D)
think I have an EmberBeard and a RedBeard
plus lots of other themed names
Ive had my WoW account since about 2005 or so, before all the good names disappeared.
Fuck all the new people, I paid well over 1k dollars thru the years to use those names, and I'll pay another $15 to keep them.
So suck-it up you bunch of cry-babies.

As long as you're paying.
