I guess this is just old news to me, knowing & being related to so many people who are in PR & media. Welcome to the world of today; and its not just limited to game/tech media...
Some of the emails have been released too, from within the group.
“Who here hasn’t slept with a PR person or game developer? #AMIRITE”
That's from large gaming sites, crazy.
Some outlets have admitted the group exists, some refuse to comment. I think some people should lose their jobs, and all of those sites have 0 credibility left.
Why exactly should we give a shit about who fucks who??
We are the Founding Fathers in this virtual world in which we create. As such it seems we must do what our Founding Fathers had to do.. in order to let our fellow gamers have a fair shake.
Most of their senior staff and game reviewers are in a group where they discuss behind the scenes which agenda to push. It tends to be a liberal agenda...
yes yes, the big evil liberal agenda on game reviews.
Where is the story about the conservative agenda on making games the scapegoat for gun murders and how its responsible for every crime committed by our youth?
"People who tell you youre awesome are useless. No, dangerous.
They are worse than useless because you want to believe them. They will defend you against critiques that are valid. They will seduce you into believing you are done learning, or into thinking that your work is better than it actually is." ~Raph Koster http://www.raphkoster.com/2013/10/14/on-getting-criticism/

Big Liberal and Big Conservative own the gaming industry....that's why there are so many games about social justice and biblical times...
Ignoring the decidedly polarized tone, is the source information credible? Are there groups of gaming journalists getting together to determine which stories they will publish as a group, rather than each site making the decision independently on their own?
I'm not even sure this is really an issue, but I'd really like to know if they are acting like an Illuminati group. :-)
While I can't speak to the exact practices of the businesses in question, I can speak a bit from personal experience. To preface, every individual reporter and PR/marketer is different. Its necessary for people in PR to cultivate relationships with reporters so that they are more likely to get fast contact with them and be more likely to get placements in the reporter's publication. PR people like reporters who are more flexible and willing to print what the PR company wants, and reporters like PR people that get them good stories and exclusives. Theres a usual give and take & rapport building dynamic between the two groups. As such, its really not surprising that PR people keep lists of good reporters and vice versa. Like everything else, there are benefits and drawbacks to this basis of relationship building, but its just the way the business is.
Good communication and trust is important between these groups so that news can get reported quickly, but there is always the increased possibility of collusion to push an agenda, which is really the fundamental purpose of PR. Might there be a dark cabal of reporters and PR people out there determined to craft the video game landscape to their vision? Possibly. But more likely the industry as a whole is just a collection of individuals who want to self-promote. Reporters want exclusives to get promoted and earn more, and PR people want good placements to move up the ladder.
Edit: just looked more into the article; the list of names are just whats called a "media list", names of friendly basis reporters. Very standard fare in PR

Exactly. A lot of people don't seem to understand how the world works, so when something like this comes to light, it's a catastrophic upheaval that reeks of corruption and conspiracy.
Any professional in any industry is part of multiple organizations, mail lists, and groups dedicated to their profession. These aren't clandestine skull-n-bones gatherings. They're business as usual.

What's hilarious is every single person needs to look no further than a mirror to find blame. Instead people are easily manipulated away from the truth by getting us to argue the semantics of left/right or liberal/conservative.
News flash: They're both the same damn thing and all they really care about is the bottom line.
The world doesn't operate in black and white but they sure do a good job convincing the idiots that it does so they're too busy arguing with each other to see the truth and do something about it. Wake the fuck up.

Could not have said it better myself....
get away from the "who's side is better" war....it's a ridiculous notion. Just take a look at corporate campaign contributions and you'll see that party matters not, they all have the same boss...

well whatever you do dont say 'MMORPG has a creepy dude with lots of breasts ..I mean an evil mustache on the front page' because you might get labeled as having a feminist agenda

All media is like this no matter what you're reading/watching. I try really hard to stay away from media altogether. I'd rather take my time picking out bits and pieces that are known to be fact and draw my own conclusions. Like I said, no matter what media I'm looking at.
Moved this over to Off Topic but locking it up since the topic has little to do with games but has basically become more along the lines of a political discussion, which is not permitted under our rules. Also this deals with people's personal information.
