Looking For a New Game For a MMO Noob

DragoonDexDragoonDex Member Posts: 4

First let me first explain my title. By "MMO Noob", I mean that I have played only one MMO (but I did play it for eight and a half years) where most (not all) players have played multiple MMOs. Runescape is the game that I am referring to. That in itself will more than likely earn me the "Noob" title as well. I loved RS in '06 but now I only log on to chat with my clannies.

Now for what I'd like in a new game. My preferred genre is fantasy. I am not against trying out sci-fi or historical genres. I don't PK so PvP doesn't matter to me. I'd prefer not to be PK'ed every time I step outside a town though. Pay model doesn't matter except that I'd have to be able to atleast try it before subscribing to or buy it. I would like to have good storyline but a storyline isn't completely necessary. I love sandbox gameplay but don't care much about RP'ing. Crafting that actually matters would be good. Type of combat doesn't matter, I'll try all types though I'm used to auto attacking with special attacks/abilities. I prefer no classes. The more customization the better. I also prefer soloing over grouping.

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

Some good fantasy MMOs to play would be World of Warcraft, Guild Wars 2 and The Elder Scrolls Online.

All of them are pretty easy to get into for someone that hasn't played many MMOs (or none at all).

    Story-wise I prefer GW2 and ESO though.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is also an easy one to get into, with a heavy focus on stories (each class has its own storyline for example) and it's fully voice acted. But it's clearly not fantasy. (Well, unless you count Star Wars as fantasy instead of sci-fi)

The Secret World is also a great story experience, though it's more difficult than the others to get into. It's also a modern day setting, like the Dresden Files and World of Darkness (the supernatural exists, it's just being kept from the average Joe and Jill out there). Still, if you don't mind getting your butt whooped a few times during the learning experience, it's very much worth it.

All of the above are safe from getting PKed as well, unless you play on a PvP server, or in ESO's case, wander into Cyrodiil, the open PvP zone.

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

The Secret World and Elder Scrolls Online doesn't have a trial that I can see. Both look good and I may just have to buy to try them.  I'll definitely try the other three. Only have a week to try Guild Wars 2 starting tomorrow. Thanks.

Dragoon, I am going to suggest something I generally do not suggest (for personal reasons), FFXIV (Final Fantasy 14). Why? Well you already seem to have some interest in the final fantasy series with your account name and sprite dragoon avatar and for someone who does not have a lot of pre-conceptions about what an MMORPG should be like it can be a great game. Its fantasy, it doesn't have pk but does offere several types of pvp options, has a good bit of story (if you get into it, look forward to hildibrand quests... best thing in the game) and while it doesn't have a lot of sandbox it offers a wide variety of crafting options in a nice easy to use but interesting to play format and player housing. The one point it doesn't satisfy completely is solo, while you can level to max playing solo the game requires you to play dungeons to advance its storyline from time to time (4 player instanced dungeons) but this is how most mmos are today anyway (they emphasise instanced dungeons and raids).

A free trial is offered and can be found here : http://www.ffxiv-freetrial.com/us/

Just do me a favor and don't subscribe to the idea that  this kind of game is the holy grail of mmos.

Yes used to love the FF series. Stopped playing after FF X, because X-2 was stupid (in my opinion) and XI was an MMO. At that time I didn't like the idea of MMO's because I'm an old school video game RPG'er and in my mind RPGs were for single players only. Still not used to the Multiplayer part of MMO. Started playing my first MMO 4 years after FF XI was released. I'll give XIV a try. Thanks.

EDIT: Yes, I know the first RPGs (Pen and Paper) were multiplayer only.

A game where crafting matters is rare these days in fantasy games. Fallen Earth has a good crafting system if you are into post apocalyptic stuff.

I checked out Fallen Earth and don't believe I'll like it. But I might try it anyways. Thanks.

Out of all the games, Project Gorgon is probably the most like runescape out of any game I can think of. It is based off Ultima Online, and it has a skill system much like Runescape has. How you play the game depends on your skills and abilities, and the items you collect. The economy in-game is more personal, like Runescape used to be. I think you will really enjoy it. It's free at the moment, so check it out!
