[Preview] Trove: A Cubed MMORPG

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Trion is taking on Minecraft and SoE’s Landmark with their own brand of sandbox cuteness with Trove, a voxel building multiplayer, online sandbox MMORPG. Graphically more akin to Minecraft than Landmark, Trove provides a different color of sandbox for players that enjoy the building game with some fighting, collecting and crafting thrown in for the fun of it. We got some time with the title at PAX to discuss the recent additions and upcoming closed beta.

While the article gives the general idea of the game, it's also very misleading.  Every player starts with 2 classes, the Knight and the Gunner.  Supporters will also start with the Dracolyte.  The rest must be purchased via earned or purchased game currencies.  Classes are broken down by melee and ranged.  There's no tanking or healing.

The Hubs are land masses where people can build their cornerstones and meet other players, but they're far from what an average gamer would consider a "capital city."  Mounts don't provide perks, but pets do.  Also, I've been playing for about 3 months now and I'm pretty positive that it's not a browser-based game.

Don't get me wrong.  Trove is a great game!  But it's definitely not the game that was talked about here.

I've played the beta for this, its decent, could use more levels and stuff though, and a bigger home plot to craft on. See everyone gets a home plot that you can call in to any map your on and it'll be the same on any map, and you can add to it and stuff.

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:

    A. Proven right (if something bad happens)

    or

    B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!

    uh...what?

This article doesnt seem correct at all...

    The Deep Web is sca-ry.

There are many things that are wrong in this preview article:

    1. Dracolyte is not a "dragon healer" - it is a magical melee damage class. There are currently no healer classes in Trove, but all classes can use rechargable flasks which are like health potions to heal themselves. The Knight class ultimate ability also fully heals the knight and gives a self shield.

    2. There is falling damage in Trove, but you are correct that Gravity does not apply to blocks.

    3. Mounts do not provide different perks except for medium speed versus fast speed. However there are companion pets that provide small boosts. There is not a Jeep mount in game either, but there is a flying magic carpet mount.

    4. Trove is not a browser-based game. It is currently a Windows only OpenGL and DirectX based traditional 3D game.

If you're going to make an informational article, at least try to get the information right.

This part killed me the most... "Trove is a browser-based game and currently in Alpha."

This is the worst article I have read on this site.  Not only does this writer not know a god damn thing about this game, i don't think she every played it either. There are so many mistakes, it's honestly embarrassing.

I think the one last week about ESO selling gear via cash shop was a bit worse, personally.  But that wasn't just misinformation.  That was an entire article written just to start a fan war and possibly gain page views.

You start to question if they actually play the game or just get assigned the piece and cobble together an article based on info from a gamer forum.

Articles like this are obviously the result of someone paying an "author" to give a product a positive spin -whether he/she played it or not is secondary.

Nice that my castle greyskull is shown in the article :)

There is a few facts that are wrong though. As some have pointed out earlier.

I read this article and thought wow, Trove has come a long way since I first played it back when there were only a couple of people and devs on the servers. Obviously on reading the comments that's not the case.

This is the kind of article you find in your local newspaper's gaming section where they try to appeal to kids, where you just shake your head and laugh.

This really needs to be pulled, because honestly the author comes off as having never even played the game. Others have pointed out the misinformation already so I won't bother with that, other than to note that the errors made were not involving secondary or tertiary game play elements, but core characteristics.

AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!

Yup, I keep coming back just to see if they pull it, or edit it.

This is a complete offense to actual gaming journalists who wish to be hired. This author obviously doesn't care about his job in the least.

Thank you very much, I've applied it and will be giving the game a try. I'll have to do the same next time I have an extra key for a game!
