Disappointed PnPer

Quick background so you know where I'm coming from: I've been playing PnP D&D for more than a decade.  At the same time, I've played more than my share of MMORPG's.  I've been following DDO's progress since before they had a website (mainly on vnboards).  And I've agreed with many of the design decisions that have been made -- I realize that sacrifices have to be made with the D&D rules, and that the most important goal is for the game to be fun.  And I've been a fan all along.  That is, until I got into the beta.

I've been playing in the beta since November.  I realize that the game is still unfinished, and there are many performance/interface improvements in the works.

So please understand that it pains me to say...

This game is a major disappointment.

As you all know, the gameplay is focused on instanced, group missions.  There's no crafting, no PvP, and little exploration.  (And I have no problem with any of these things.)  But given the lack of other content, I expected the missions (dare I say, dungeons?) to be top-notch.  And they aren't.  Most of the missions in this game are poorer quality than your typical fan-made NWN module.  They're linear, stale, and boring.  There's no decision-making in quests.  There are no meaningful dialog choices.  NPC's are nothing more than quest ATM's.  And the fact that there will be so few missions at launch adds insult to injury.  I find quests in World of Warcraft to be more interesting (and with better stories), and that's saying something.

I'm not a power-gamer...I could care less what level my character is.  I loved Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights.  And quite frankly, there's not much in DDO for people like me.  No story.  No depth.  No content.  Just lots and lots of meaningless combat and loot.

    *comfort*

Turbines target audience seem to be the very VAST market of player who enjoy a twitch game hindered by a system who was meant to compensate coordination, reflexes and any twitching, so those peoples like to be master of all trades.

Yet, there is nothing but combat, combat, combat.  Not bad, but it is everything put together.

They get a LOT of unhappy players from all cast and origins.  See, when me, Fadeus and some hardcore anti-Instancing guy all agree about DDO as not been delivering what they should...

Maybe I could be wrong sometimes.  Maybe Fadeus could be wrong sometimes.  Maybe the hardcore anti-instancing guy can be wrong sometimes.  But, when we all agree, it seem quite unlikely that we would ALL be wrong.

And you, a moderate and well though person also agree...it reduce even more the odds that we would be wrong.

Let's me make a free, completely harsh and nasty comment.  There is no Designer in the Turbines team.  Sure, some folks have the titles and the flafla, but as far as making a whole, logical, vision-infused, game...no designer at that table.  Or they didn't let the designer do his job.  Either way, same result, no designer.

See, a guy like Brad...I may question his sanity and mental well beeing openly, but he is a designer.  He have a vision, an understanding of the whole.  He is wrong of course since I am right, but I can tell you he is a designer.  I doesn't think Turbines has a Designer in charge of the project.
