It sounds like today's Q & A gave us our first glimpse at what PvP will be like in HJ! If you haven't read it yet take a look...

It is a LOT easier to police and GM that than it would be for 20 servers with 1000+ on each one.

Here's the thing, I think that if they had that many servers with that many people, they would have a certain number of GMs for EACH server, instead of having a bunch try to take care of all of them, that way the players/GMs would also have a sort of relationship on each server..

I agree with a post I read earlier that basically said what ruins most pvp games is because it was an after thought. And hopefully from what I read HJ isn't gonna let that be the case. I like some of the things I've read on the subject that suggested they want there to be a point to pvp and that they want to do it in the right way. I can see the differen't factions having to settle certain matters via pvp which I think would be cool. I also think it should be possible to have guild vs guild pvp. As far as having pvp as a one on one situation I really don't know how that should be handled. I only know that games I've played with consequences, including death penaties, dropping items, and pvp felt so much more real and definitely caused you to think before you did anything.

I'm sure they are aiming to be the best, but I think Simu has their hands on the best GMs, tools and they KNOW what they are doing.

I've never been fond of PVP but that's just me.  I'll be very happy if they have seperate servers or if its on the same server have it be consentual.  Never was fond of being ganked.  :)

I can go either way with PVP, I don't really care, although I do think PVP would make it more interesting, I would rather not have it if people can just kill whoever-whenever.

Unless Simu does a direct about face (which I can't see happening) I doubt you will have to worry much about being ganked (unless it is on a PVP-centric server)  This type of activity has never been accepted (at least in Gemstone) and actually can get you banned (That is not to say you can't PVP currently - it just needs to be consentual)

Thats a slightly misleading statement. I've played characters before that didn't consent. They didn't object either. ;)

I'm not for or against PvP, though having it in in varying levels (different server sets?) can make for very interesting versions of the game (re-roll'ability, longevity).

What point I do think is totally lost is that it's not just a case of "The game needs PvP or it'll get boring". There are plenty of games with PvP that are crud.

I think it is much more important for a developer to completely cover the areas that are so severely lacking in the current "second generation", and some of the first gen MMOs too.

**There needs to be a point to playing. We need to feel when we log in we could have the change to drastically affect our character and/or the world.
**There needs to be a purpose that we're playing towards. Whether it be through RvR, PvP, co-operation, there needs to be ongoing challenge, changing war/world socio-political climate, the world needs to evolve. Static worlds like WoW and EQ2 completely lack purpose because we do not affect anything.
**There needs to be individualism. We need to feel unique. The items we craft shouldn't be the same generic Broad Sword of Cheese that every other player crafts. We need to be able to customise our skill set, our looks.
**Mobs need to... move. NPCs need to move... We understand that AI is advanced enough to make the mobs think like we do (thus the fun of PvP), but there is nothing more boring that going to Area #2351 and you know there will be groups of X Gnoll over there, groups of X skeletons over there etc.

Of course there are other things as well.
But just from experience, one of the key things that I think brings these things to life is a PvP setup. I am as carebear as they come in the anti-PvP ganking-30 level difference-l337 d00d category, but for the game to have ongoing conflict, in depth community development and actions that really matter, a good RvR PvP system could be very, very fun.

But that's all just my opinion. And it seems a lot of what I addressed is being covered in HJ in one way or another. But of course, I wouldn't mind if GMs were to clarify what and how ::::28::.

Anyways, there's my thoughts so there you have it!

Ahh...but Zee....not to argue semantics with you....but if you didn't object, then you did imply consent, did you not :)?

I cannot speak for the current state of DR as I haven't played it in 4 years...but in GS - if you go on a mad killing spree - you WILL be taking a vacation - which has happened to some of the most famous people in GS history - aka Thalior.

I won't pretend to know what Simutronics is planning for a CvC element in HJ - I'm no JoJo - I do hope there is some 'reason' behind it, and an implementation along the lines of DAOC - and not WOW

Well... That would be true if we assumed that people were considered to be 'implying consent' by not objecting. Fact of the matter is that the player may have objected had he known that he was about to be killed but he had no idea it was comming, so in his mind there was nothing to object to... until after I killed him. Of course this wasn't just a random person that I killed. By all rights he should have known it was comming based off of his behavior but then again... how many people expect to be killed by an empath while in town? image

But the actual point of my post was to point out to those who have not played Simu games before that there IS a way to kill people without getting their permission in GS/DR. So... the PvP isn't always consentual. But killing someone multiple times or going on a rampage is bound to put a dent in your playing time, once the hammer falls.

Of course... none of this applies directly to HJ because we haven't stated how PvP will be in HJ. Not yet at least. image

Will there be any PvP in Hero's Journey? If so, what type of PvP? Will it be only in an 'arena' or will it be a free-for-all. Organized or unorganized?

Here are two polls from this very web site:

    1) What aspect of MMORPG's are you more into?

    Role-Playing / Community
    imageimageimage 21.3%

    Killing stuff
    imageimageimage 12.1%

    Questing
    imageimageimage 19.2%

    Economy
    imageimageimage 4.1%

    PvP (Player vs. Player)
    imageimageimage 16.7%

    Exploring
    imageimageimage 17.5%

    Making stuff / buildings
    imageimageimage 9.1%
There are quite a LOT of people who find PvP the BEST part of a game.
    2) What are your views on PvP?

    I don't like PvP combat.
    imageimageimage 23.6%

I think it is the best part about MMORPG's.
    imageimageimage 38.6%

    I don't care either way.
    imageimageimage 37.8%

This poll shows that just under 40% of the players on this site think that PvP is the best part about MMORPG's! With over 75% of people saying that they either like PvP or dont really care and less than 25% of people saying that they do NOT like PvP, I most certainly hope that the devs at Simu are putting a lot of time and effort into a specific aspect that will make or break this game for so many people.

I truly hope there is a PvP server in this game (and every game) for those who prefer such gameplay, but I do not put stock into PvP polls on gaming sites.  I have played MMORPG's for years and most folks I have gamed with do not like the free-for-all-get-ganked-at-any-moment atmosphere of PvP.  The PvP crowd is truly overly vocal.
