Path of Exile: Celebrates Seven Million Players

BMunchausenBMunchausen Staff WriterMMORPG.COM Staff Posts: 400

The boys in Auckland are doing a dance of joy this week, as the player base for Path of Exile has reached more than seven million players. Part of this success can be attributed to a successful Taiwan launch. Grinding Gear Games launching its popular online game in Taiwan in August and registrations already number more than a million.

For an explanation of the game's overall popularity, one need look no further than its constant content updates. Its second expansion, Forsaken Masters, acquainted players with seven mysterious Masters who offered them a slew of quests, training, item mod options as well as customizable towns known as Hideouts. Add that to its pre-existing boss fights, skill system and Challenge Leagues, and it looks like you've got a winner.

For more information about Path of Exile or its content updates, visit the official Path of Exile website.

Wont be playing this until they fix the steep angle at which you view the game.

Had they put an angle like Diablo 3 or Torchlight, I would be all over this game...

If you are a Star Wars fan, why not try the Star Wars The Old Republic?

I won't be reading this until you fix the harsh color at which I view the text.

Had you put text like every other poster on these forums, I would be all over this post.

But in all seriousness, the angle is why you wont play? Your capacity for adaptation must be nil.

Sorry I much prefer the almost top down view of my character.  For one it gives me perfect vision of the battlefield surrounding my avatar, especially around corners and buildings.  Secondly it allows developers to actually have meaningful ranged abilities actually go to the edge of screen and allows mobs to hide off screen and be tactful.

This is easily the best F2P game out, besides desync which made me quit for the second time a few weeks ago you'll have trouble finding something as polished as this game, and I'm glad that they've found success from a completely non P2W business model because they deserve it.

For a little garage project that's still pretty awesome. The game rivals any ARPG on the market and was made for less than D3s coffee budget.

Oh I agree - I love PoE - I still play it occasionally.

The thing is over time - F2P games get a TON of accounts created - which is a pretty meaningless stat in the end.

Active players is what really matters.

Would you rather have 7 million accounts created  with 20K active accounts

    or

1 million accounts total with 200K active players?

    Who spends more money ?

Better than Torchlight 2...not anywhere near as good as D3.

I just threw up in my mouth a little. D3 and good should not even be in the same sentence unless it's something along the lines of "D3 was good at being a useless polished turd".

You should probably see a doctor about digestive issues if you're randomly throwing up.  D3 was pretty mediocre at launch.  It's terrific now.  Far, far better than the other two games.

D3 was crap at release, and has just finally reached a playable state.

TBH,  I feel both games have their own set of problems and I don't play either because of those, but PoE is definitely the more option of the two.

I think the more important statement of this celebration is that it supports the theory that a good game with a cash shop that doesn't evolve around power enhancement items can be successful.

The difference between release D3 and current D3 is minimal. It is a terrible game at it's core. No matter how many expansions they release it will still be a terrible game. Blizzard fans (or stockholm syndrome victims) manage to hype themselves up for every "miracle" expansion/patch and then they are gone within a few days/weeks.

PoE on the other hand is pretty much perfect at its core, but lacks in presentation/wow-factor to attract new age gamers. For old school D2 players that are not Blizzard fanboys it is pretty much the perfect sequel.

I won't play any 3rd person game, so I'm worse than the commenter above.  I want immersion, not an arcade game.

Ah, I was wondering if that was the case, or whether the population really exploded since I played it last.

Yeah... clearly D3 is better. With a lesser crafting system. A lesser skill system. Less variety. Cartoony vs gritty graphics.

But hey it's Blizzard and has 10000 achievements. I *really* don't understand why anyone would pick D3 over PoE. D3 is far, far worse than D2 ever was, and PoE is the true successor to D2.

Best that is out there ! True f2p, i dont get it why ppl even try to compare it whit D3, D3 is B2P just there makes them alot diferent, beside D3 is from blizzard so open your wallets new expansion coming for another 50$  and by expansion i mean 1 new "char" lol

In honest the angle is pretty much the same as Diablo and Torchlight, the only thing I could really see as a difference is that POE is zoomed in more. D3 and POE play like different games mind you and although D3 is fun (after many many patches) POE has always had a depth in it that D3 has not yet caught up to.

I also would like the option to zoom out more, seems a bit confining. Outside of that, this game is a lot of fun and truly F2P. Kudos on the recent upgrades, good stuff there!

Its always great to see a small indie developer succeed, providing hope and inspiration to other groups.

Production wise I'd agree but substantive issues like core gameplay, Character progression, meaningful story and last but not certainly least the loot is 100X better in Path of Exile.  The only thing D3 does better is it plays smoother but that is it.  I still play both but for me Grim Dawn and PoE are ten times the game of a D3.

In my case, i pick D3 any day because i can play it with gamepad (on PS4). If PoE had gamepad support on PC i would not touch another ARPG (besides gauntlet which also has gamepad support on PC). Thats my personal reason for choosing D3. I cant enjoy point and click games.

the first difficulty is just a smidgen into the game.  You still have 2 other difficulties and Mapping....By far the best part about POE.  If you don't get to the low 60's and start mapping you can't possibly judge the game.

At release yes. have you played it recently? i actually stop playing POE because D3 is that much fun.

do higher difficulties change the gameplay in any way? or is it just bullet sponge mode and high damage? If gameplay doesnt change at all then im probably going to have enough with the first difficulty. Or am i asking too much from GGG? They made a great little game anyway.
