The story, history, characters, and universe Bungie has crafted for Destiny, which will be revealed and reveled in over the next decade is absolutely top-notch science fiction.

People just don't seem to understand something that isn't neatly placed inside a tiny little box for your immediate consumption.

What ever happened to having a sense of wonder, leaving questions unanswered and having mysteries to solve? People got lazy, and so used to having everything spoon fed to them in nice little packages they forgot how to dream and truly be in awe of the unknown and discovery.

    Very sad.

I haven't been super impressed with the post-release content they've been dishing out, but I'm still thoroughly addicted and engrossed in crafting the best Guardian I can be. I'm also playing the game nearly 100% in co-op with friends, like minded individuals who can "see the forest for the trees" so to speak, so that certainly helps create a more engaging experience.

I do greatly appreciate the variety in modifiers Bungie has been throwing into the daily story and weekly heroics, as well as now the Queen's missions. Certainly adds another layer of complexity and challenge.

I don't often do Crucible, yet always seem to joyfully fill my many hours of Destiny played thus far, barely any of it spent shooting into a cave :)

The game is absolutely a blast playing With friends!

My Brother just picked it up last week. So now we play a lot together in Fireteam, With voicechat through PS4 chat. Works like a charm.

The game is so much more enjoyable when playing with others for sure!

And I agree. It's sad everyone got spoiled With Mass Effect series, to have everything spoonfed to them via handholding. As that's pretty much what ME was.

Don't get me wrong. I love the ME series and played it a lot. Destiny is just different and takes a different approach to the story. A lot of people just don't get it, nor are willing to put any effort in to unravel it by themselves.

There are already a lot of sites out there, where People have unraveled a lot already and put together their thoughts on the story. Pretty interesting what People have come up With so far.

I have sunk in nearly 35 hours in the game so far. Still haven't completed the Story compain.

The same posters who are telling this for every single new game that is coming out?

I mean... how many times have we heard now that this New MMO is going to kill WoW! This New game is going to save us all! Yada Yada. Bla bla bla.

If I have learned one thing over the years, especially after SW:TOR, is to ignore all hype! Especially hype created by the gamers themselves!

I am enjoying new games a lot more now, now I ignore most of the hype and keep my expectations in check.

If I had to continue follow all hype around New upcoming games and Movies, I would not enjoy a single game anymore nor go to the Cinemas anymore either.  /shrug

On this site? There were none. Check out the post history in the Destiny forum.

I hope this is the future however - the business model of publishers delivering content and charging for it. And then we consistently assess the value. This site gave South Park a Value score of 8 (and a Longevity of 9) however. Not knocking South Park but consistent - I think not.

Value is crucial. But publishers and developers have to recoup their investment or we get no new games. The alternatives?

    • subscription? You know the griping that goes on. And the sales issues.

    • cash shop - some better than others but is this what we want all games to be?

So yes I hope the future - a return essentially to the past.

Thank you!!!! This is all that I've been arguing this whole damn time. Oh, and BTW, South Park SoT has like a 5 hour campaign.

I don't follow the games main forum, these were posters in the likes of the Pub who were saying how amazing it was going to be. As always, wait until a month after it comes out before you buy. It is because we don't do that so many are very disappointed or even scammed.

I'm happy to see the itemization changes, but do they really think the vanilla content (particularly strikes) is good to leave as is? Honestly, instead of shutting down the loot cave, they should've focused on making strike bosses actually unique. When the bosses are literally normal faction mobs, only bigger with a large punch and RIDICULOUS amounts of health.... It smacks of laziness.

Seriously, who decided making a strike boss on Earth a big Servitor, or the boss on Mars a large Collosus with flags? They even have the same exact attack patterns as the normal mobs after which they are copied.

I'd say bungie had a nice solid game for us, but Activision stepped in with the corp greed with $$$$ sparkling in the eyes and cut the game up into a DLC cluster f*ck. Having scraps of story fed to us for money, when the base games story was short is just wrong

Really? This is nothing New! This has been going on for years.

Or have you already forgotten about the Mass Effect 3 day 1 DLC fiasco?  Bioware ended up being forced to give it out for free, to save face and rebound the huge backlash. lol. /shrug

Destiny is a solid game right now and With over 35 hours sunken in so far, still not completed the story mission and only done 2 different strikes so far.  I have already gotten more than my money's worth out of this game.

The first DLC won't come until somewhere in december, with free updates planned before it and the second one 3-4 months after that.   Pretty much on par with these kind of games.

It's cheaper than MMO's these days, that either have a subscription or try to rip you off with an overpriced cash shop. Or worse, do both!  /shrug

Still waiting for an actual way to communicate with other players I don't know in order to form an actual group in this game.  There is NO social system.  I bet it IS fun to play with your friends in this game, but put yourself in the shoes of someone who has no friends with a PS4 that also own Destiny and are playing the game at the same time as you.  Yeah, I thought so.

Is there no group finder or LFG interface?

There is for each strike ( flashpoint ? ) type of mission , it matches up guardians in a team of 3. Also there are 4 categories of random strikes ranging from level 18 , 20 , 22 , 24 that also do. The weekly , daily heroics and raid do not however. Hope they change that soon. So what you have to do for those last mentioned missions is make friends via the in built system on your desired console.

Iv'e played for about 48 hours now and can't stop. Some very cool changes coming on Tuesday too and that random strike level 24 and the daily and weekly heroics are having a loot overhaul. The schematics are also having an overhaul on Tuesday , they call them engrams they can produce some nice items but ATM the higher ones can produce lower ranking items and that was the problem.

They are adding the voice / chat system fairly soon , it sounds rather like a better version of PSO episode 1 and 2's version on the old XBoX.

7 is a bit harsh and this is a very early review , did you play all the content ? Also is it a review of an MMO or just a plain RPG ?

    Cheers,

could you really call this an MMO though?

could you really call this an MMO though?
as you said this kind of game has been attempted by a few but none have really got it right yet.
are consoles too limited for this open world mmo shooter to work?
the player's imagine great things could be done with this idea but I think trying to include all platforms is still limiting the possibilities.
I'd like to see this hybrid idea geared at the PC, gives more room to grow in my opinion.
just as the big MMOs have always been on PC and massively expandable. those players still want content and expansions above and beyond DLC, skins, small bits of zone added.

instead of Shooter like an MMO, how about an MMO like a shooter? I think a lot of people would eat that up.
  • JorendoJorendo Member UncommonPosts: 275

Innovation a 7? Really? This game is as generic as you can get it. There is nothing innovating about it at all.

The most time you are doing horde like missions. Hold a place and fight off waves and waves of enemies. This has been pretty much the standard for multiplayer modes in shooters. Nothing innovating about that as its been done to death already by many others.

So you get loot, again nothing innovating, not even among shooters. Borderlands done it twice already and then there was Tabula Rasa who done it before.

What is so innovating about a half baked wanna be MMO shooter that isn't really MMO and as shooter its as generic as you can get it? You can tell from the start its Bungie, it has a huge Halo feel to it. Not a bad thing but again nothing innovating either as they don't seem to break off what they done before.

Tabula Rasa from 2007 was a real MMO shooter. It gave you a dynamic world with mobs attacking bases and conquered them. Meaning you couldn't hand in your quests until the base was recaputred again.

On every side this game falls short. Its the most expensive game ever made and its a generic mess of a game that does nothing original and innovating what exactly? If you call this game innovating and give it a 7 then i seriously wonder how many games you been playing before cause any gamer with more then a few years experience can tell you that there is nothing, absolutely nothing that hasn't been done before. Worse, its done much much muuuuch better by older games before. So please adjust the innovating score cause really this game is everything but innovating, if any its a step back for shooters and MMO's (seeing it tries to be both and doesn't do a great job at the MMO part and its okay for a multiplayer shooter in pvp).

  • JeminaiJeminai Member UncommonPosts: 151
omg! I'm sorry but it's "innovative"

When I read reviews like this, I'm so happy that I didn't bought PS4 or XB1, and I did bought a high-end PC. I love my PC; I can do everything with it, work, study, have fun and there are gazillion games that I can play, many of them free two play, many of them available only on PC. The only console I owned lately was Wii and the only console I would consider buying is WiiU, because it offers something original and different. Still, I must say I'm really surprised how medicore the supposed 'console big releases' turn out to be. It is a little sad, as I had a lot of fun playing hundreds of games on PS1 and PS2 in the past.

I think this game is a victim of it's own hype, and of the fact that it tries to regroup many aspects of different genres.

This is the perfect recipe to get flamed left and right... and that's exactly how it has ended.

Most review seems to say that it's a very beautiful, very polished, addictive and fun game (especially when played with friends). Yet, they put the emphasis on the sub-par story, that it's not long enough (~18hours, I would say that it's in the average nowadays, and more than some AAA games like COD),etc. to explain their low score*.

*(Knowing this game is bound to only get better with time, I understand why MMORPG rated it like that.. it's got to have some margin to up the score a bit  for their "re-review".. ;) )

    --

An example of the opposite would be Shadow of Mordor (different genre I know).

Most review seem to say that it has a pretty generic (even bland at times) story (note that the main storyline took around ~15-20 hours, depending on if you do some sidequest or not I guess). That it's basically a Gotham City reskinned in the LOTR universe where the only innovation comes from the Nemesis system (which seems really cool). Yet, it's a very fun game (at times very frustrating also it seems), so it gets a high scores and good press (less hating) left and right.

Hype for this one was not much (aside from LOTR (and gamers) fans who can't get enough of it), yet, to me, it looks like it shares a lot of the issues Destiny has (and in a single player, one could argue that  story should factor more.. and that it's easier to polish since you don't have to support "always online" play, servers, etc.). So why the differences in reviews?

Probably, like I said, Hype (be it self-generated or community based)  and not trying to do to much..

    --

Anyways.. sorry for what some will take for a  "fanboy rant"  or whatever!

Like you can imagine, I like Destiny  (yeah, hate me for it! :P ), but I'm pertty sure I will also like Shadow of Mordor (but for whole other reasons) !

In the end all that matters to me is : "Is it fun?"

So far Destiny has been a great Yes! It's ending it's 3rd week and I'm still having a blast, so, by (my) console games standard, this is money well spent !

When I will be bored of it, I will move to something else (Shadow of Mordor is certainly on the list), but it won't change anything about the game, it will not change that I had a lot of fun playing it when I did!

I think this will be my only FPS on PS4 for a while (I tend to play FPS on PC only)... And I'm sure I will get back to Destiny now and then as new DLC gets released!

The reviews and cost of this game are making me decide to give it amiss, maybe once it gets some content I might find my way to paying the money for it.

I think a 7 is fair. The game was very ambitious, and for me it works. Its by far the best MMORPG Shooter out there and for me is still tons of fun. At about 70 hours myself and I'm close to calling it done. Reached level cap, cleared hard mode raid, and the PvP is a mixed bag for me. The game could have been more, and I honestly believe that Bungie will implement the much needed social features, so they still have me excited for the future.

Well worth the money but it's lacking a lot of the extreme longevity that most MMOs have.

the question i want to ask is where did the $500 million developing this game went to?
