MMORPG gamers migrating to other genres...

KopogeroKopogero Member UncommonPosts: 1,685

...myself included with ARPG such as Path of Exile, but that kept me interested for only 3 weeks. So, I'm wondering if there are other old time MMORPG gamers out there who have migrated or intend to toward other multiplayer PC games out there?

$ for some might not be as important out there, but definitely it is for me...Honestly, I would've gladly continue to be involved with this genre November when WOW:WoD comes...I just can't seem to stomach the $140 to $230 price tag to enjoy it for 6 months to a year...After all it's just one single, outdated game.

The rest "F2P MMORPG's" out there seem too restrictive or not worth it, plus lack of content updates to be enjoyed or maeby there is some gem out of the many I could be missing. Anyways, my focus for the time being is to move away from this genre to other multiplayer PC games and there are just soooo many, which can only be harder to choose from. So many recommend so many different games and then some are paid to, especially the prominent reviewers on known sites.

Meh, I think gaming is slowing down in general. All innovation from games is dwindling in every genre. Too many copycats, not enough risk-takers. Too much competition, playerbases are super spread out now, F2P games are all the rage.

People value "e-sportability" and instant gratificiation games nowadays as well.

First person games have not changed, Destiny tried but meh, you've already heard everything there is to know about Destiny.

MOBAs are all basically League of Legends with their own flavor.

MMOs same thing except WoW, not LoL.

RTS, Starcraft is and forever will be the one to beat.

Sandbox games (as of right now) are all Early-Access unfinished games that are all a spinoff of Dayz.

Maybe people are playing less MMOs, but I think that has to do with people's lack of interest in the RPG genre in general. People just want to suit-up and get nasty with instant PvP action. Or they want to immerse themselves completely in a Single player experience... I don't think this means that the MMORPG genre has failed us though, just that certain people have different preferences.

Now Playing: Bless / Summoners War
Looking forward to: Crowfall / Lost Ark / Black Desert Mobile

Personally for me it is not really the games I find uninteresting anymore, it is the people playing them.

I think I would rather play games by myself now than deal with antisocials and people with short attention spans.

I think this is what is killing MMO's faster than you can say permadeath.

Not me.  I pretty much only play MMOs.  I do play some of the better single players (GTA, Batman Arkham stuff, some others).  I used to play online shooters a lot but became burnt out after BF2142.  Plus, I'm getting old and can't keep up.

Some get bored, others get sucked into it.

I still frequently encounter people who are on their first MMO. I tend to play both, always have.

Whenever a great title comes out that manages to capture my attention for a while my MMOs tend to fall to the wayside, but I always eventually get back to them. I suspect that'll be the case when Dragon Age: Inquisition comes out too.

My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

I have considered myself an MMO player for the better part of 15 years. But the genre is too damn Same-"ey" for my tastes.  It feels like every MMO released since WoW is so beholden to that style of play that it's hard to breakout of the rut.  changing 1 or 2 ideals and callit it an MMO is not innovation nor is it revolutionary.  If your game contains a linear trek through quests and an endgame that is reached in weeks which contains Instanced PvE or PvP then no amount of combat tweaks, Economy tweaks or Crafting tweaks will change the game from what it rightfully is....A damn WoW clone.

Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!

Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!

im taking mmos very slowly now because im losing interest in mmos as a service. I rather invest in something that i know will never die (if servers die i can still play offline). Mmo servers are bound to die at some point and waste any long term investment. Ill keep one or two mmos to go to every once in a while (GW2 and possibly wow), but there is really nothing in the mmorpg space that feels worth the investment at this point, for me personally. So yeah, single player games with modding support, and coop games to play with friends, and if online stops working i can still play the game forever. Thats a better investment to me.

Not sure what you're asking here.

Yes, many people have already migrated or are in process of migrating to other genres&types of games.

Myself included.  MMORPGs does not seem to be able to tackle most fundamental issues (AI, RMT, cheaters, etc) so no sense to continue to play them.

3 weeks in Path of Exile is quite okay.  Are you saying that you are dissatisfied?

If you really want to keep playing one game for very long time.  Well then you need to try to figure out what you like to do and choose / try game accordingly.  There are people who play i.e. FPS, RTS or MOBA PVP games for months years,  some people play sandoxy/survival pvp games like DayZ  or Arma III,  some play hack&slash grinders like Diablo 3 or PoE for months/years as well.

.. .i wouldn't call myself "migrating to other genres". I never stop playing other genres. MMO is just one genre, amongst many, that sometimes I spend some time on.

  • AlBQuirkyAlBQuirky Member EpicPosts: 7,432

Not really "migrating", as I have played all kinds of games previous to MMOs. My path just does not wander down the MMO path very much anymore.

    - Al

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

I don't migrate genres, i "migrate" games. One game no longer fun -> i play another one. That does not rule out returning to the previous game, either. MMO or not has nothing to do with it.

I'd have to say, and it's probably true for others aswell, but I have never restricted myself to just MMO's for my gaming enjoyment.

There are just as many entertaining genres out there other than MMO's, and have been for many years.

So I'd say that rather than MMO players migrating away from the genre, I would say that it's always been a mixed bag of games/genre's that has kept many players interested in PC gaming.

Personally, I think the genre has gone as far as it can go until true VR kicks in... if it ever really does.

I'm really going to miss the social experience of MMORPGs, but the fact is the design philosophy for MMORPGs needs serious change. If designers want to make games that work, they need to look at the way different people play and not the amount of time they play. A role player does not play an MMORPG with the same motivations as a min-maxing power gamer. Plus, devs haven't exactly been trying to make end game any more replayable than what's been around for the last ten years.

As for right now, I'm waiting on Alien: Isolation to come out. After that it will be Evil Within followed by Dragon Age: Inquisition. As far as I'm concerned, I'm going back to my roots and for good reason: Gaming is just greener in other pastures.

For you, I would say do not give up on World of Warcraft just yet. I have left many games just to come back and see that they did not give me the same feeling I had back when I played them.

If you just shut out everything else and focus on World of Warcraft, the guild/guilds you're involved in, the communities you're involved in, helping out others in game, raid progression, achievement points, arena ratings, and last but not least the lore, you will see you do not need any other games or genres, and you will see that your monthly sub is well worth it.

I often bring guildies in and explain the lore of the dungeon/raid before we enter, it gives me a sense of value to the group beyond leadership, and they get a chance to really take in the lore as we head into battle, the appreciation others have when I do that makes it all worth it.

Think about it, if you decide to play in other genres, you're still going to have to buy those games from anywhere from $5 to $60 a pop. If you decide that's just the route you're going to go, then I would suggest Skyrim for you. The sky is the limit in Skyrim and if you're looking for a quailty game at a bargain price, Skyrim is hard to beat.

WoW might be 10 years old, but it only launched 10 years ago, it's still head and shoulders above the rest and it won't leave you feeling like "ok now what" after you beat the game like in single player rpgs, arpgs, and other genres makes you feel. The game constantly changes, and while WoD is based on older lore, the game will get changed yet again bringing back the freshness, unwelcome changes are bound to occur, but you just have to roll with the punches.

Absolutely I, and I think most people, do not limit myself to one genre of games as different type of games do different things well. MMOs lately have been copying single player games too much and  have been losing my attention as single player RPGs do things like deliver a story much better than MMOs do. Why would I play SWTOR when I can just play KOTOR and get a better experience?  What MMORPGs do that single player games can't do is provide a persistent world and a very long progression curve. This is what I want any MMORPG I play to provide but the newer ones are hardly even trying.

I also flat out dislike having other people in my game if there is no real reason to work with them. That's what a lot of newer MMOs feel like, a bunch of people playing single player games along side each other. Maybe some people enjoy this but I personally find it much more immersive not to have random people running through the world if there is no reason to actually play *with* them.

I would love to have a game like Guild Wars 1... A co op rpg that is lobby based with good multiplayer PVE that is challenging. Add in a player created map maker tool to create your own pve or pvp arenas or levels to play through. Add immense character choice permutations and I would be in heaven.

Have fun - enjoy all games.

I agree with this post here.

The truth is people play games to have fun. I think the stagnation MMOs have gone through is mostly because the games have been so similar to one another, and take so long to build that players play the shiny new game, then feel like they have played it before (because it's nearly identical to another game they spent a lot of time in) which burns them out more quickly. There are some interesting titles in the pipeline which could help there. And some of the more recent releases have also tried some new things.

But as a gamer, I'm going to play what I have a good time playing. I personally haven't enjoyed the theme park era all that much. I felt like UO, EQ, SWG, and WoW were the most important games this genre has seen, and it's been a long time since those games launched. I've enjoyed a number of the newer games, but not enough to hold my attention long-term for the reasons mentioned above. So I've found myself playing games like Civilization, X-Com, The Walking Dead, or NBA 2K14 in the time that I might have spent playing MMOs in the past. Doesn't spell doom or gloom for the genre though, it continues to grow at a good rate. There are more good MMOs now than there have ever been. It's just that the awe factor of the early games is gone and has been replaced with a "been there, done that" feel.

Agree wholeheartedly . I play RTS like Starcraft 2 ,single player games like Mass Effect  or the PS3 for FF games. I also play MOBA like LoL ,ARPG like Diablo once in awhile. I have to say though that my most loved genre is MMORPGs though.

What I miss is a game to feel committed to. I did to World of Warcraft during Burning Crusade with it's fun PvE and PvP. Later on to Darkfall. What I feel these days though is the lack of time to actually commit to something. Oh well.. I would probably invest more time to something that I feel interested in playing. But seriously... ArcheAge had nothing to give me. Guild Wars 2 was meh. MOBA games are generally boring due to it's retarded community.

There are few titles out there that I like:

    EVE Online

    Perpetuum

    Darkfall Unholy Wars

But all three kind of requires insane amount of time to enjoy on a good level when it comes to PvP. I mean, logging in a couple of hours a day in EVE Online to do some exploration or mine farming is not something that I will enjoy.

I don't see the point in bothering with MMO's as they are right now, as they're just single player games wrapped up in an MMO shell. That's not what I started playing MMO's for, and it's not what I play MMO's for now, there are so many good single player games around for that kind of experience. And so I've stayed away from MMO's for years now. I've dabbled here and there, checked out new releases if they have trial periods, but most of the time I just need to read reviews and player comments to understand the new style MMO's are not something I want to waste my time and, more importantly, money on.

When developers finally get rid of this single player style gameplay, with quickly regenerating health and instant respawns with little to no downtime, and remove the awful quest chain system that they're all implementing.. well, then I might pop back and check their game out. Until then, nothing in the MMO genre interests me.

After spending nearly a decade playing virtually nothing but MMORPGs, I have to say, over the course of the last couple of years, I have spent a lot more time playing ARPGs (mostly Diablo 3, a bit of Marvel Heroes and Path of Exile) and card games (mostly Hearthstone and Rise of Mythos, a bit of Hex) than I have playing MMOs. I've even dipped into some nostalgic single-player CRPG action with Wasteland 2.

There's just a real dearth of interesting MMORPGs coming out. The last release I genuinely loved was Guild Wars 2.

Well, i got into the genre like, huh, 7 years ago or so.

But since there is nothing im interested in, im moving back to my roots, single player fps, and occasionally rts, rpg.

Besides these genres, i recently got into smite.

Which is a moba, and a helluwa lot of fun.

Unlike other moba games, it is 3d third person with decent graphics.

    I highly recommend it!
